GE2020: Possible that Singapore won, PAP won, Opposition won?

We either had the most extraordinary general election or some people are getting ahead of themselves.

Did you hear the verdict that everybody has come up tops in GE2020?

Among those passing this judgement is veteran diplomat Tommy Koh who called the election results a victory for Singapore, victory for the People’s Action Party and victory for the Workers’ Party.

Likewise, Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has dubbed the election outcome good for Singapore, good for the PAP and good for the opposition.

Phew! We must be the only country to produce election results so stunningly equitably good.

Conventional wisdom tells us that it remains to be seen how the results would pan out and we shouldn’t be jumping the gun at making definitive judgement calls.

And if we were to go by past elections, we would need to be even more circumspect.

In 2011, the WP had the audacity to capture a Group Representation Constituency, up till then seen as an impregnable fortress for the PAP. This subsequently led to the WP being embroiled in a multi-year town council saga that ended up in the courts and has yet to be concluded.

So who knows what “lesson” awaits the WP for its audacity of winning a second GRC in 2020.

Will the PAP be amenable for more robust democracy, in furtherance of a two-party system?

Or will the PAP double down and try and checkmate the WP and opposition to prevent further inroads in Parliament?

Minister Lawrence Wong has already given a preview of the PAP’s cards.

He said over the weekend that now that the WP has 10 Members of Parliament, it cannot just ask questions and ask for changes to government policies. “It is also their duty to put forward serious policy alternatives to be scrutinised and debated,” he added.

WP chief Pritam Singh swiftly responded in a Facebook post that the “fundamental role of a responsible opposition” is to question the government and hold it to account.

On the WP proposing “serious policy alternatives,” Pritam said that unlike the WP, which relies on a volunteer base, the government has access to “a 120,000-strong civil service as a potential resource.” He added that opposition parties have “been hampered by the lack of information and statistics on national issues and government policies.”

Barely 10 days after the election, the PAP has already upped the ante for the WP.

To say that GE2020 is a win for the country, win for the PAP and win for the WP and the opposition is premature. It remains to be seen what kind of politics will be played out by the PAP.

  • It is the Millennials, Uncle:

Actually Augustine, the PAP is quite ‘jaded’ after all these years and many of them are in ‘retirement mode’ AND loaded as well. So don’t be surprised they’re no longer bothered by the opposition taking over. I anticipated another 2 more elections and we could have a 50-50 representations.

But this could have dire consequences if the Main Opposition doesn’t perform well for the next 5 years. We’ll have to see how it goes from here.

PAP & all its cronies, like Tommy koh & such, will be ever ready to accept praise & accolade from any foreign institution or any foreigner for that matter. They’ll cited such compliment over & over.

But when foreigners criticised PAP, PAP respond will be – who these foreigners think they are & what do they know about Singapore.

Tommy koh & those ambassadors are behaving like that.

Nothing really change with the PAP.
Maybe a 55% vote count next GE will force a change.

Ever since Lawrence W. let the ugly cat out of the bag ie. your hdb flat turns [email protected] the guy’s been striving for hindsight @covid19. Not that his foresight is especially astute with respect to the mission of alternative parties to his crony-capitalist bastion.

PRITAM SINGH IS RIGHT – access to information in all public institutions.

GIVE US FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACCESS RIGHTS to all peasants at zero costs including cabinet papers SO THAT PEASANTS can be the check and balance of not just the incumbent Government but also the opposition benches.

In that Temasek Holdings, GIC and of course, NOBODY’s pay ( or paid out of public purse) is a STATE SECRET.

    GAME ON, Lampar Wang?

  • opposition dude:

Don’t bother too much if it’s PAP’s win, Singapore’s gain or whatever. PAP will want to make it tough for WP since it’s in their interest to do so and I’m sure they will again come out with something to try and trip WP up. The trick for WP is to ensure that everything has been handed over nicely with no room for anyone to suddenly do some magic.

And as for PAP wanting WP to come out with their own policies we should also see what WP has proposed before we pass judgement. Since WP’s policies will be for the people instead of making money like PAP’s then their should be loads better than what we have now.

I definitely would love to read what policies WP have got to ease the cost of living, buying of flats and REDUCTION of aliens on the island at the very least. We can see that PAP likes to wayang since the cost of living has been rising and we have been feeling it for how many years now? And the number of aliens as well, we have been asking for fewer of them on the island and yet their number have swelled as the years pass.

    @ Augustine Low

After blowing away more than $93 billion by raiding the reserves and a sizeable shrinkage of our GDP, for ANYONE, let alone Tharman Shanmugaratnam to claim that GE 2020 is a win for everyone is just insane…..reflecting their total lost of intellectual and moral integrity.

In the case of Tommy Koh Tong Bee, he is not only an ambassador-at-large drawing, I would expect not an insignificant amount of taxpayer’s money, but he is also the Rector of Tembasu College at the NUS law faculty.

In any case Tommy Koh Tong Bee has been called out by Professor Bridget Walsh of University of Nottingham Malaysia. Link: https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/forum-tommy-koh-misrepresented-analysis-of-election-results

As is usual for the PAPie acolyte, Tommy Koh blamed the messenger rather than address the message.

I lost all respect for Tommy Koh when he remained silent after the US Immigration judge called Amos Yee’s persecution for “NEFARIOUS” purposes. See article at: http://theindependent.sg/amos-yee-is-deserving-of-asylum-us-board-of-immigration-appeal-rules/

Tommy Koh, Tharman Shanmugaratnam and those mentioned in Tommy Koh’s drivel in the 158th ranked Straits Times have in my view lost their sense of honour, morality and intellectual integrity. They should never to believed nor trusted to be unbiased.
