Alleged Religious Discrimination at CK Tangs

It disturbs me greatly as a Chinese individual to read about the vast discrimination retailer CK Tang imposes on the muslim community in our midst, who are fellow Singaporeans: [LINK]

Reports are also surfacing, of sustained discrimination Singaporeans from all walks of life continue to face at their workplaces which prompted a sharp rebuke from Ho Ching. Well, I would like to educate her that Xenophobia and Racism are 2 different equations and what CK Tang is currently practising is racism!

I would further like her to know that Singapore is not the PAP and loving the Nation does not equate to obeying the government, especially when unjust laws are passed and resistance becomes a necessity. She of all people have the least moral authority to lecture anyone when her own family is in a mess! We only have ourselves to blame for blind loyalty that are accorded to uncrowned royalties profiteering from all of us which is really a slap on our own faces.

Until and when we are courageous to take that bold step to vote in more PSP and SDP politicians (WP is already an approved Opposition), this chicken and egg situation is likely to persist.

Another little known fact about CK Tang is the disproportionate number of foreigners relative to locals working at their various departments which did nothing at improving their productivity levels. They have no call centre and calls go unanswered as do feedback, the Malaysian staffs have difficulty understanding and conversing in simple English at a touristy and upscale shopping district, their Filipino and cafe staffs have little to no interest serving customers and would often gather among themselves to chat or respond to cellphone activities instead.

Before our general election commenced on June 23, several work passes of CK Tang’s foreign staff were temporarily put on hold but have since been approved by MOM. Is minister Josephine Teo not acutely aware of the ever increasing local jobless rates over the last few months and even now for her ministry to be approving foreign work passes? In any case, it’s time MOM and the PAP government scrap the toothless Tripartite alliance and start taking direct responsibility for labour complaints lodged to them. We don’t pay them millions to set up more think tanks or committees to tai chi away problems.

Establishments that also practice sustained religious discrimination towards Sikhs, Jews and Muslims should be boycotted at all costs, for such businesses do not belong in our multi racial, multi religious society. If they cannot accept a turban, skull cap or tudung then I do not apologise for being unable to accept them operating on our shores either!

We can only look to the 12 MPs to be raising discriminatory practices in Parliament as MUIS, Mendaki and the Inter-Religious Organisation’s pay checks depend on their not understanding such matters.

Trust Is Not What You Say But What You Acutally Do!

  • PAP d Real Problem:

PAP made SG into a toyland for millionaires, like themselves, the 3 Chinaman, the Kweks, the Kwees, the Wees.

They blasted so loudly good neighborhood schools are able to produce kids of cleaner parents, hawker parents, taxi driver parents.
How many are there and where are they now.
All of PAP MPs nvr failed to say they give back to society as they benefited from the system.

After the see their first $16,000 pay cheque, one wonder they REALLY MILK the system OR give back to the system.

Lilian, picking on CK Tang is definitely WRONG…CK Tang the Patriarch was a Devout Christian who closes his Store on Sundays until he went to “SLEEP”…it only opens on Sundays when it went Public…

How the staff performs and recruit can be found everywhere where the foreigner is including Govt Hospitals and Department

I am NOT in favour of Discrimination in any form and the Govt Hypocritical Approach is Just that!!! “Hypocritical”

Singapore govt practices politics with a religious tail as a sting. In effect, this is mixing politics with religion or religion with politics.

Should one dresses one’s belief at work? Then LGBT to seven days adventist should be allowed to wear their “dress code”. Why be sexist or discrimative? Plunging necklines welcome behind pharmacy, food and cosmetics counters too etc.

    Author,

Lets not jump into a quick conclusion regarding Tangs.

In the last election, some people (you know who) were already pointing fingers at a candidate from WP.

    AMEN.

HIJABs come in different details and styles; some include covering of faces except the eyes,if i am right?

To me,in SG,especially in an AIRCON SHOPPING Mall,i would think covering the face is not quite necessary unless it is for MEDICAL PURPOSES like mask-wearing for COVID,etc.

Tudong without mask is ok,i think.
    Its like Sikhs wearing head-gears.

We need to know full details.
In SG,wearing FULLY-COVERED HIJABS is really not necessary.
I guess in Middle-east where people used to travel nomadically in deserts where there are sand-storms,wearing fully-covered hijabs make sense.
Of course, for truly religious practices like requirements of female devotees, wearing fully covered hijabs serve its purpose of cutting down distractions?

    Lets not be overtly subjective.
    We are all singaporeans.
The ONLY DISAGREEMENT i have is when EMPLOYERS N MINISTERS TREAT OUR OWN sgs prejudicially in favour of FAKE FTs or even REAL FTs when there are SGS FULLY QUALIFIED TO DO THE WORK.

TO me,our GOVT FT POLICY implementation is unacceptable!

It is claimed that Singapore’s Education is world class. Yet PMETs who are products of this very system had been sidelined and replaced by 3rd world foreign citizens.

The born and bred true blue Singaporeans are treated like 3rd class citizens to pamper to the rich foreigners??

    All for business profits??

Reminds me of the incident where Subway asked a guide puppy to ‘leave’ because of halal. Who owns Subway? Not a Muslim, yet just a bloody employee can be so blatant.

Who owns Tang’s. It is religious belief not racism. You want to earn a living in my turf?, please respect the benefactor. NO such thing as free lunches. Lilian Wong?

The old boss Mr. CK Tang was a religious Christian. He even close shop on Sunday. Not sure if it is still practise now.
CK Tang is a pro-Christian establishment. They even let Muslim work in their shop only without tudung. Like that also cannot!!
It is racism if Muslim cannot be employed.
Can Muslim can go into a Chinese restaurant and demand that they cannot sell pork? Because if they sell pork, the Muslim cannot patronise it.Than the shop is racist…???
SAF female Muslim soldier also cannot wear tudung. So SAF is racist?
    What do you think?

Multi racial, multi religious society mean all can operate on their own.
Have your own rules and regulations and yet accept others rules and regulations.

“Establishments that also practice sustained religious discrimination towards Sikhs, Jews and Muslims should be boycotted at all costs, for such businesses do not belong in our multi racial, multi religious society. If they cannot accept a t*b*n, skull cap or tudung then I do not apologise for being unable to accept them operating on our shores either!”

So Singapore Police Force, SAF cannot operate in our shore because they cannot accept tudung for their female Muslim personnel.

  • SG is not a Caliphate:

Religious freedom does not give one the right to impose his/her religious beliefs, practices and mores on others. If wearing the tudung to work is so essential, by all means, go find employment with an organization that fits your requirment or find work in Malaysia just as many Malaysians have come out to work in SG. The RTS will make it more convenient next time. If you do not want the job because of your insistance on wearing the hijab to work, some other people will take the offer.

    Harimau says discrimination at work?
Employers have the right to impose rules on the premises where their employees work. Why then the Govt. still gave employers the rights to employ FTs in large numbers. Isn’t that discrimination against Singaporeans?. What hypocrites.

  • Change We Must:

CK Tang is running a business and not a religion organisation. Businesses have their own set of rules for employees. I believe they are not racist or discrimination. But it is good to see that they decided to change their rules after pressuring from the public.

Let’s face the reality, there are people who discriminate quietly. I have faced that before and that is worse then telling you outright. So I decided to quit my job, because I also disagree with the company’s policies as I also understand they are running a business that requires such and such. So my advise is, if you are not happy working for the company, quit. No need to use race or religion to justify your believe.

  • Where is MOM on this?:

Tangs as a business entity should have the right to set its company policies so long as it is not in violation of any law. Let the person take the matter to court if he/she insists that his/her Constitutional or religious rights have been violated by Tangs. If she wins the case, then it will set a precedent for all other companies – a great victory for the hijab cause. MOM should make it clear as to where it stands on the matter to prevent such disputes .

  • Maverick & the Macabre:

A perversely wealthy woman showed Hodja – her all too ordinary neighbor – the coffin she had customized for herself.

She wanted Hodja to admire the quality of the wood.

“What do you think of the carvings on the sides?” she boasted to Hodja. “Don’t you think they are superb?”

    Hodja nodded his head appreciatively.

“I insisted that the inside be lined with felt – the best felt material of course!” exclaimed the woman her face beaming.

    “Of course,” agreed Hodja.

“I wanted it to be perfect,” the wealthy woman blurted on. “Can you think of anything that’s fallen short haha?”

    “Yes,” replied Hodja, “the occupant.”

  • Quran: "The Cow" verse 177-178:

In the Name of God All-Compassionate Most Merciful

True piety does not consist in turning your faces towards the east nor the west. But the sincerely devoted person is he who believes in God and the Day of Judgement, the angels and revelation, and the prophets; and spends from his substance – however much he himself cherishes it – upon his near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and the beggars; and to free human beings from bondage; and who is steadfast in prayer, and renders self-purifying dues; also [the truly pious are] they who keep their promises whenever they promise something, and are patient during misfortunes and hardships and in times of peril:
It is such people that have proved themselves to be true; it is these who are truly conscious of God.”

  • Merobok:

CK Tang is owned by a Christian family! They have a right to employ whom they want in their Organization! So, those who feel uncomfortable working under their roof should stay clear. It is just like Hotels and other Hospitality organizations, where Muslims are allowed to work, but the dress code is specified clearly to the applicant who joins subsequently. Hence, do you find any tundong wearing Muslims in the Front Office or Reception counter?
Another example was when the owner of the previous Ming Court Hotel, who is a Christian, not permitting his staff to hold Ghost month festivals at the back of his hotel. It went into Arbitration and the Judge ruled that the owner has his right to do what he wants. It is not anti-religion!
The writer Lilian wong does not know how difficult it is to recruit locals to work in coffee houses or the retail sector! Perhaps she goes on an attachment to one of the hotels or Department stores!

  • Rude Lazy Stupid:

I just get this impression that just because Chinese are majority, they have to hire some minorities just to show they are not racist.

Generally, service attitudes across most stores is indifference. Not hungry or enthussiastic for business. “Everything is ther” and not “Can I help?”

But I think a lot of Malay staff provide the worst service across all stores/industries. Rude, lazy, stupid or all three. I’ve had some say to me:”You don’t have to buy.” After I remaked the stuff is costly. If I ran a business, I would think these people are bad for business.

  • Impure:

Face it. You can’t force religion on a secular body. What the govt did was tantamount to religious bias plus extremism when they exploit the legal system to violate secular societies or the rights of those who are in touch with reality.

To those who insist on imposing religion on societies, you should find employment or similar faith bosses to accommodate your perculiar or religious practices.

If you can’t find a living in your faith through your great or loving god, like a father to you in your mind, then maybe you should face reality and truth for a better way of life.

Govt shouldn’t be sending confusing and conflicting messages, to human beings who desire to live in reality and truth, by mixing religion with politics.

Govt is the religious extremist and guilty of influencing the people towards exremism

  • Where does it end?:

Pleass stay with the issue without hurling insults or perjoratives on a person’s race, color, character or religion. That would be racist. Why did Tangs’ Management finally give in? Under pressure? From which corner? What is going to be next? Will the company also provide a prayer room for its Muslim employees to pray? That is one of the core tenets for Muslims, isn’t it? To pray five times a day? Can Christians in the company demand for paid off-days on Sundays, or the Seventh-Day Adventists, on Saturdays? Can Muslims take Fri off to go to the mosque? All these are valid religious reasons.

  • Yes, we should not ...:

    … discriminate.
Why are the Singapore EP laws discriminating …?
Tan Cheng Bock is being discriminated …
Why is an Indian Malay considered to be a Malay by laws that empower PAP cronies to do so, to be selected as an elected executive president of Singapore?
If we can answer this, many of our problems will see daylight.

Tang could avoid all the problems by selective recruitment. Just recruit staff that would accept its dress code.

So simple and easy without having to say or do anything. Me think this is exactly what they are going to do after this episode.
