CK Tang supposed Hijab Issue

Before the furore from a turban incident of Mr Parvitar Singh has yet to simmer, another similar controversy has arisen to reignite the whole issue on racial and religious equality in a predominantly Chinese multi racial setting.

This episode should suffice to further educate the already learned Mdm Ho Ching on the difference between Racism and Xenophobia, with the latter being more about mass retrenchments and unemployment in a pandemic situation where host countries should never accommodate foreigners at the expense of their own populace.

Now being a minority of minorities in Singapore, I was shocked when a lady friend of mine and myself witnessed a Chinese security at Police Cantonment Complex querying me on “what’s that thing on my head” and it apparently bothered her on whether I should remove my Kippah and be allowed in the premises to retrieve some electronics which the CID seized on impulse and had to return when Mr Eugene Thuraisingam wrote in.

One of the hallmarks of a Developed and Civilised Country is dependent on how the minorities are treated in its midst. For our Country, there appears to be two sets of practices, one for the commoner and the other for top cats as evident in the ability of our embattled President and ruling party politicians to don their Hijabs while discrimination continues to exist from their detached ground, albeit subtly!

A Muslim woman of puberty age should never be rendered a choice or ultimatum to study at a public school or Madrasah if she so chooses to don the Hijab on her own accord. Preparations should be made to accommodate that rather than compulsion to conform to what MOE or other agencies decide, is the right image! The same goes for a Sikh gentleman or other religious minorities who decide to don their religious attire while being mindful of the secular society at large which should never oppress them.

It could perhaps be due to the failure of our education system when we scrapped Civics and Moral education in favour of business and the sciences, to properly school society on why certain groups don religious attire. My mother covers her hair as do most married Orthodox and Conservative Jewish women for morality sake and fidelity to their husbands. This is what we term “Tznius” and such decision should never be left to a government or organisation to decide!

We are drifting further and further apart from the ideals of our pledge since the time the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew (may he rest in peace) handed power over to Mr Goh and subsequently, to his own son. We have become intolerant in the name of tolerance and enacted more legislations curtailing public discourse on critical and contentious issues facing the Nation, with threats of detention and legal action. As Tactius puts it: “ The more corrupt the State, the more numerous the laws”.

If we are indeed serious about combating religious extremism and “nurturing” a multi cultural society, we should begin by allowing people to practice their religion freely, all the while keeping in mind our non religious neighbours instead of suppression that will give rise to all sorts of doubts and conspiracy theories. It will also compel religious minorities into the arms of religious extremists, seeking to convince them on the “evils” of a secular society.

I end this note by wishing Peace to all out there who believe in it, strive for it and freedom is never more than one generation away where we can imagine all the people living life in peace. It’s not too difficult to achieve, start dreaming!

Best Rgds,
Daniel De Costa

  • Religious Freedom:

We should have religion freedom as long we do not do it at the expense or hurt other religion.
Lets Singapore set a good example of religious harmony in a world that is getting increasing intolerance.

i think this whole issue had been blown out of proportion.
president HY should have been impartial..after all she’s just a puppet figurehead.
if not, why dont she come out also to speak on the many unfair policies thats making tru sgs suffer.
why only take sides regarding her own religion?

Response : “Non religious neighbours?” Is those neighbours by Daniel Dr Costa referring to our neighbouring countries Malaysia and Indonesia? If so, what makes Daniel think our neighbour countries Malaysia and Indonesia are non religious?

    Daniel De Costa,

Did you know that the Chinese have started to shift away from the practice of divine worship 2500 years ago?

Did you know that the Chinese have been secular for more than 2000 years?

Singaporean Chinese were culturally cleansed by anglophile Lee Kuan Yew to become angmohs worshipping shallow bananas. Unlike the shallow bananas in Singapore, the intelligentsia of China has been secular for more than 2000 years, and they have never disturbed the religious practices of the ordinary forks.

These days Singaporeans look at people who are different from them through the lens of the racist angmohs. This is a serious problem that Singapore has to confront, but our leadership is a culturally cleansed shallow banana.

    Ha ha ha!

Religion does not deal in reality. Religions are conceived from abstract ideas, philosophical theories and the fermentation/ exploitation of the imagination of man and by man. The bloody history of religious conflicts, cruelties and attrocities against humanity is testament that religion is not the way, the truth nor will it ever leads to life everlasting and peace on earth for mankind.

The logical thing to do for those who truly believe in God and an everlasting hope is to address the roots of human conflicts which lead to war.

The answer cannot lie in suppressing the truth about religion and repackaging it into consumable product or services. That would still be cheating the imagination of the people and courting the ugly and fearsome consequences or destruction of lies.

If you understand the above then the author’s innocent admonition to be “tolerant: of each other bloody faith”(and if you bow not to religion then you shall be condemned by “tolerant people” and be prosecuted/killed by law – the singapore way)

For your info, that’s not harmony or peace. That’s mixing not one bloody faith into your politics but mixing MULTI BLOODY CONFLICTING FAITHS into your politics – pure madness.

It is a recipe/concoction for death and destruction because it lives and builds on LIES.

Hence the author, and singapore govt, makes no sense and contribute nothing to further humanity everlasting peace on earth!

In fact, they are themselves guilty of “religious harmony violence” against those who adhor lies, by their “multi-personalities disorder”!

Now can you handle the HISTORIC truth?

just putting on a hijab does not a muslim make.
if so why dont the muslim men wear a male version of it too?
whats so immodest about a muslim woman that she has to cover up her head and part of her face?
and why do some ladies wear it but some dont have to?
dont mean to be rude but if its not that compulsory why make such a big issue over its use in this case?
no one is telling her she cant wear a hijab.. be clear about this.

If you are, then first of all you must show secularism yourself by not wearing the tudung.

Many women from Islamic countries like Turkey and Pakistan are liberal and don’t wear the tudung.

Even when they do, it didn’t also cover the head fully exposing their hair more like a veil.

Terrorists can use hijab hide their face. It should be banned.

Security should be a higher priority than religious beliefs.

Those who insist on wearing a hijab on religious grounds should find another to place to live.

  • Change We Must:

CK Tang is running a business and not a religion organization. If every religion believer want to practice their religion in their workplace , what will happen? We just cannot accommodate any religion to do that. If you think you have the rights, other religion also have their rights. Go find a religion organization to work , if you are to follow your religion strictly.

Don’t bring religion to work, don’t bring religion to politics. Do it at your own home or your place of worship.
