The beginning of the end?

Liew Mun Leong

In summarising his decision to acquit Parti Liyani, the Indonesian domestic worker on all four charges of theft, Chan Seng Onn J said:

“… I allow Parti’s appeal against all four charges against her. I first observe that in the present case, which involved a voluminous number of items, the proper handling of the evidence by the police and recording of the allegedly stolen items is crucial in order to preserve the chain of custody of the items. Coupled with the existence of an improper motive by members of the Liew family for mounting the allegations against Parti, I find that the convictions against Parti are unsafe and accordingly acquit her of all the charges.”

The judge had concluded that there was an improper motive by the Liew family when Liew Mun Leong lodged a report with the police two days after Parti was repatriated to Indonesia. That improper motive was to prevent her from reporting to MOM about her illegal deployment to clean the house and office of Liew Mun Leong’s son, Karl Liew.

The AGC, MOM and the Minister of Home Affairs have promised to investigate the unsatisfactory matters raised in the judgement. There is no need to waste more public funds in conducting unnecessary investigations. The appeal judge has ruled. Proceed to charge the following persons:

1. Liew Mun Leong for making a false police report.
2. Liew Mun Leong for giving false evidence in court proceedings.
3. Liew Mun Leong’s daughter, son and daughter in law for giving false evidence in court.

The three parties should re-examine if:

4. MOM’s punishment with regard to the illegal deployment of Parti was sufficient punishment for Liew Mun Leong.
5. The unfair practice of employers in repatriating FDWs at 2 to 3 hour. MOM should ensure that FDW have a right to find alternative employment and to pursue any claim for unfair dismissal.

6. Employment agencies should be punished for aiding and abetting an employer to breach MOM regulations that do not allow FDW to work in more than one household.

The fact that Liew Mun Leong has now retired from holding key positions in Temasek Foundation, Surbana Jurong and Changi Airport Group and that he has friends in high places who can harp on his “contributions to Singapore” are irrelevant when it comes to prosecuting him. Liew Mun Leong and his family members have been found to have lied and must be subject to the law of our land.

Hi, Teo; what makes you think it is the end of Liew?

Didn’t you notice AGC and MOM are busy buying carpets. Some agencies are looking for tai-chi masters?

If they need a scapegoat, they will just get one junior officer from the police.

    Case closed!!

  • Harder Truths:

But…but…but…if no ‘investigation’ by an ‘impartial’ government body is undertaken, how then is it possible to vindicate the ‘unjust’ accusations and findings against this LML, a paragon of virtue, who has selflessly devoted his entire life to the service of our splendid nation?

This case is a simple mistake which he and his virtuous family is deeply and sincerely sorry for.

It is of course common knowledge that the money he has ‘earned’ is only a small fee that is rightfully owed to such a person, who would have undoubtedly been paid even more in the private sector.

The end of this saga will that the Liews will have to pay fines of a few thousands.
Mitigation will be that this is his 1st offence & in view of his great contribution to society.

Remember there is more than a few similar district judges like the one who found the maid guilty.
One wants to believe that every judge wants to make sure that justice is served in all cases but there must be some who also believe that their career is equally important if not more than important.

Likewise many in the police, the persecutors, & of course PAP agencies & their officials.
These people know who can give out promotions & higher appointments to them.

These are smart people. Know how to get proper attention.

    It’s in the system.

Shanmugam will investigate the “process” not the Liew family. It is clear that the maid was illegally deployed and that the Liew family lied about the theft in a attempt to frame the maid to stop her (from providing proof of the illegal deployment). But they will get away with it because he is a “PAP” (Power And Privilege) member. Resigning/retiring from all his posts will be considered sufficient punishment. Singapore is a “one country, two systems” place.

I think this Liewgate shows that the authorities trusted the rich and the powerful. The poor and the lower classes in our society suffer and also, being bullied into submission. Even if you personally think you are not guilty, and want to claim trial, but w/o tons of money, your dream of winning the case fades away. The rich get richer and powerful, whereas the poor get poorer and outcast due to the political system created by the Party Against People.

You read about it in the news, you watch it on TV and in the movies.

People getting fixed, set up for a bad outcome, etc.

So this is enormously unbecoming of a person whose station in life is so very high up, to fix his helper like this, with the assistance of his son whom he must surely know by then to be a dubious character.

Fixing people is already so bad and so distasteful. Fixing someone as helpless as a helper is just evil. That is the only word to describe it.

You might like to explain why DJ Olivia Low had ruled against Parti Counsel's submission of her complaint to MOM at the 1st level trial, and why even Dr Tan Cheng Bock had called for an inquiry on DJ Olivia Low's conduct (of breaching her oath of office) and the conduct of the DPP.

If the whole case is about Liew Mun Leong and his family's lies, what's there for the AGC to find out what's wrong? In the first place it should be obvious that the DPP had deceived or otherwise misled the Court as to whether the DVD player was indeed "SPOILT" in the layman's expectation that the player should be able to play a FRESH DVD disc. The test as to whether the DVD player was "SPOILT" should not and must not be whether one could play the RECORDING from the DVD's HARD DISC as the DPP had done.

So many persons anyhow keep Parti’s belongings for their own use. And not just peanut $1 items, ok? Total value of $34,000, by the evidence given in court.

  • liew mun leong the liar:

Thank you Ms Teo for a great summary.

liew mun leong must be jailed for his offences.

the maid was jailed for 2 years and 2 months.

1, so liew mun leong minimum jail term cannot be less than 2 years and 2 months. this is for liew mun leong lying.

2, liew mun leong tried to fix maid. this is extremely revolting conduct. therefore, an additional 2 years and 2 months must be added to the initial 2 years and 2 months, making 4 years and 4 months in total.

3, as a warning to the connected pap powderful who are thinking of fixing others in pap island, another 2 years and 2 months must be added. this is to warn the connected pap powderful that in pap island when pap own clan members are caught, pap gives no mercy.

unless pap metes out 6 years and 6 months to liew mun leong, there is sure as sunrise corruption in pap system.

pap heng has talked a lot about pap integrity, or lack of integrity.

a jail term of 6 years and 6 months for liew mun leong shall prove pap heng is walking the pap talk. otherwise pap heng is, as usual for pap, talking rot.

SINGAPORE – Workers’ Party (WP) chairman Sylvia Lim has filed a motion to speak about the issue of equity in the criminal justice system at next month’s Parliament sitting, following the recent acquittal of former maid Parti Liyani.

In a statement on Wednesday (Sept 16), the WP said Ms Lim’s adjournment motion, titled “Justice For All: Enhancing Equity in the Criminal Justice System”, will refer to the deeper issues raised by the case of Ms Parti, who was previously found guilty of theft.

“The intention is to discuss aspects of the criminal justice system and the challenges faced by persons of less means in navigating it. Specific suggestions to improve the system will be made,” said the statement posted on Facebook.

Ms Parti was sentenced to jail for two years and two months last year for stealing $34,000 worth of items from the family of former Changi Airport Group and Surbana Jurong chairman Liew Mun Leong.

But the Indonesian domestic worker had her conviction overturned by High Court Judge Chan Seng Onn, in a case that has riveted Singaporeans.

In his judgment, Justice Chan questioned the motivation of the Liew family in making the police report and also raised issues with the police investigations, sparking an outcry among some who wonder if the justice system is stacked against those who have fewer resources.

The WP also posted a notice from the Office of the Clerk of Parliament saying that Ms Lim’s request will be subject to ballot under Parliament Standing Orders 2(8)(d).

Jalan Besar GRC MP Denise Phua has also filed an adjournment motion for the next Parliament sitting.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, she said she would speak on the topic of “Towards Full Participation of Persons With Disabilities in Singapore Society”….
“It’s time to go beyond rehashing the same concerns and work together towards a bolder vision and plan,” she wrote…”Unquote.

Again repeating what I hv said in the KJ’s thread:

Contrary to what I believe to be the wayang party’s propaganda or more like s*ake oil speak @#Harder Truths, Singapore is NEITHER of the political systems he/she has described as :Communism, Fascism or Despotism.

The Economist magazine, with their years of independent reporting, has described SINKaPOOR as an illiberal democracy.

For me, the REALITY is that SINKaPOOR is neither of the above description……….it is a FIEFDOM – the Lee Family’s FIEFDOM.

Nevertheless there are aspects of the political system which is democratic, and it is within such limitations that there are avenues for genuine political discussion and people’s activism which can and must influence the policies, and which the PAPies have now come to realise.

In Russia, Belarus and Thailand with their very strict laws and policies towards public activism, people are rising up against the status quo of the self-serving policies as advocated by the PAPie’s “CO-DRIVER” in the form of the wayang party of whom its IB @#Harder Truths is propounding, since the supposed “ownself check ownself” policies of the PAPies suit the wayang party just fine………..notice their lack of concern and of course implicit support of the emperor without clothes failed policies whenever the PAPies have been exposed for their failures and abominations like the Parti’s v Liew Mun Leong’s case even as their wayang MPs have been pictured to enjoy themselves………….yes make merry while Rome burns.

so do we expect pap hypocrites to say anything about liew mun leong?

well, if liew mun leong is WP or PSP, sure as sunset all of them shall have something furious to make noise about.

as heaven has eyes and proves all pap folks are lying hypocrites, liew mun leong, like pap mike palmer, is clan member and so pap folks are hypocritically no sound no fury.

I worry for Justice Chan Seng Onn and if the establishment will not look favourably upon him for his judgement that ruled against one of their own.

I remember a district judge, Michael Khoo, who ruled in favor of Mr. J.B. Jeyaratnam and was sidelined soon after.

I hope the powers that be maintain and respect judicial independence.
