Who is calling? What is your telephone number?

Mr X called me. I was not available. I returned the call later in the day.

The call was intercepted by the secretary.

Sec – Mr. X is busy now. Who is calling? Can I ask him to call you back?

TKL – My name is Tan Kin Lian. I am returning a call to Mr. X. He just called me an hour ago.

Sec – What is your name? How do you spell it? What is your telephone number? Can you repeat the number?

TKL – Hello, I am returning a call to Mr. X. He knows who I am and what my telephone number is. Can you just tell him that I return his call?

The secretary thinks that her boss is busy and Mr. TKL had all the free time to spell out his name, letter by letter, and give his telephone number, which she had difficulty in hearing over a poor line. (I was outside and answering on my mobile phone).

The secretary is trained to take care of her busy boss. She does not understand that the other person is also busy.

Her boss, Mr. X, is also inconsiderate. He knew my email address and telephone number. He could have sent me a email or text message, instead of giving me a call – and I still don’t know what he wants to talk about.

My experience – we have many inconsiderate people in Singapore. It is our national culture.

I bet TKL was upset only because the secretary did not recognise his name nor know how to spell it.

Hello, TKL, if it is important enough you can be sure he will contact you again. Meantime, go and fly a kite to keep calm. Why get upset over such a small issue and broadcast it to the whole world?

I must have been mad to have read what you wrote and now spend time to share my thoughts about your posting.

@Mr. Tan; if it was important, he will call you back. Otherwise it would only be some scam call.

For me, I never call back if the number was not in my contacts list.

    @Mr. Tan be smart lah!!

If I knew TKL was calling me I would do exactly the same thing and get my secretary to cover for me.

Let’s not be petty and personal. If you are mad, we shall take your word for it.

I don’t always see eye to eye with Mr. Tan but here I agree that some staff do not exercise common sense. If you are returning someone’s call, it must be clear he has your number. All the information someone needs is who is returning the call and , at most, the approximate time of the missed call. That’s it. Having been on the receiving end of this nonsense, spelling name, dictating number, spelling the company I am from, often when outside with a lot of background noise, is just plain annoying.

Singapore’s productivity is not improving because Singaporeans just go through the motions at work and follow patterns without thinking.
