Two ways to process an order

I wanted to buy 3 laptops from SingTel under a BSG grant from the government.

I took 1 month and a lot of time to clear through the process from MTI. It was a horrible experience. I have described it in a separate story. The approval finally arrived.

I now have to submit an order with SingTel. I was given 3 manual forms to complete including placing a company stamp. I am now working from home. I have to make a special trip to the office to sort out the paperwork to buy the 3 laptops from SingTel.

This is how business is being conducted in Singapore.

Let me share another experience – business conducted from Malaysia.

I sent a request for a quotation from a Dell All-in-one computer. The order is processed by Dell customer center in Penang. I have the email address of the account manager as I placed an order before.

She sent me a quotation the following day. It contained the details of the computer. There was instruction on how to make payment. I chose the internet banking transfer.

I made the payment and sent an email to the account manager. I received an email that my order was confirmed and the computer would arrive in 7 days time.

The order with the customer service center in Penang took me 10 minutes to complete. (Actually, I already had the Dell bank account details from a previous order. Otherwise, it might take me another 5 minutes to set it up).

All right, Singapore companies like SingTel can continue our outdated and troublesome practices. I can only say – there will be no future for Singapore business and competitiveness, if we remain highly inefficient, wasteful and costly.

In 5 to 10 years, laptop and other computers will become history like the pagers. The world will enter into industrialisation version 4.0. Everything will be on cloud, all the jobs will be linked to the internet. Mediacorp and other useless companies that are relying on the taxpayers’ money to survive will be gone.

In the past 15 years, I’ve been talking about 3 deadwood institution: SingPost, SingTel and PAP. They have not evolved and are still being stuck in the 20th century.

    Ha ha ha!

  • Agreed:

Agreed. We need to be more efficient. Especially Government and GLC companies.
Some of the process dealing with the public need to be streamline.
Waste of resources and time for all.

  • Waste of reserve:

Why this PAP gov keeps on wasting our taxpayer money?

Surely, Mr Tan is rich enough to afford investing 3 laptops for his company? Thousands of dollars (or tens of thousands) wasted.

Meanwhile, poor Singaporeans get only a few hundred dollars.

  • A regressed country:

@TKL. The more processes a transaction is involved, the more labour is incurred. Many at the low-waged level are only gainfully employed to make up the statistics of low unemployment. “We have 3.5 millions jobs available …..”

  • determine genuine buyers:

aiyoh. you want to take grant hor, so must be vetted carefully ?? grant (free money hor ?) must be given with care lar, or else can be abused easily lar ? and when it comes to free grant money, a lot of people (adding to the long queue also lar) will also want to apply also lar ?

aiyoh, if pay with your own money (the best criteria to determine genuine buyers), of course process is fast lar (unless they are scams) in the buying / delivery experience lar ?? i buy economy bee hoon, lagi fast and no need to call, less than 1.529 mins if no queue ??
