The need for Mayors

Zainudin Nordin

LHL lauded those 5 Community Development Council (CDC) mayors lavishly at a recent event about the work that our CDCs have been doing. It was reported on page B2 of yesterday’s’ Straits Times.

He cited CDC’s Student Meal Plan, the $20 million Voucher Scheme for about 400,000 families which averages $50 per family, Skill Future @CDC 2020 among others as good work carried out by those CDCs.

I applaud the good work that our CDCs are doing but like many fellow citizens with their much whispers and disquiet, I couldn’t keep quiet but question the need for having mayor in Singapore since we alearly have so many MPs, let alone 5 of them.

Out of my many neighbours, colleagues, friends and regular kopi-kakis etc whom I have chatted with, absolutely zero, not even a single one of them could explain clearly and convincingly to me the need for and functions of our CDC mayors.

Their services don’t come cheap either. Each one of them is paid about S$660,000/ annually. Every single cent that they pocket, they take from our citizens collectively. In case anybody forgets, I will say again, we have alearly elected our MPs.

In fact, a lot of what mayors do are duplication or even triplication of what elected MPs ought to do. I repeat. A lot of what those mayors do are nothing more or nothing new than duplication or triplication of what decent MPs ought to be doing.

Not forgetting too that we have so many well spread out community centres in the various constituencies and surely our Ministry of Social and Family Development with it millionaire pap ministar and junior ministars helming it cannot be there just for show or “perform sub-par”.

I suspect that too many of our elected pap MPs are too busy with their full time careers until it resulted in the need and justifications for having mayors to do what they should be rightfully doing in their roles. Maybe too many of them are sitting on too many corporate boards which is also taking away too much of their time to truly serve the residents who elected them into office.

I consider that for us to have mayors and paying them such ridiculous level of our hard-earned taxes as another example of unjustifiable frivolous spending or even an outright wasteful expenditure by the lhl government and it is especially bad in a time like now. It once again exposed his knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing attitude towards spending Ah Kong’s money. It will prick my conscience hard if I don’t speak up and I believe that I am not alone.

For the pap government to appoint Mayors from among its ranks further reinforces my beliefs that the pap government is today left with just the ability to create good paying jobs for itself and its friends only but for the large majority of Singaporeans, sorry hor, you don’t be lazy la or you don’t be choosy la or you are not hungry enough la or you don’t possess the right skill set la or you have to wait loong loong hor…

And since I am commenting about mayors, I ask if anybody knows what happen to that former pap Mayor Zainudin Nordin who was under CPIB investigations for corruption and was offered bail. So far, there has been no sound no pictures about him whatsoever leh.

Think.

Our system had became very crooked. And will continue to be so. 61% had allowed that and let’s repent for another 5 more years.

Let’s see how everything get fixed.

  • Harder Truths:

    From Wiki

“…The office of mayor in most modern English and Welsh boroughs and towns did not in the 20th century entail any important administrative duties, and was generally regarded as an honour conferred for local distinction, long service on the council, or for past services. The mayor was expected to devote much of his (or her) time to civic, ceremonial, and representational functions, and to preside over meetings for the advancement of the public welfare. His or her administrative duties were to act as returning officer at parliamentary elections, and as chairman of the meetings of the council…”

In other words, a non-existent position for someone who can’t do anything but who gets paid handsomely for doing f*ck-all.

  • Wasteful Spending:

Mayors and Mayoritas coexist with ineradicable tissue packet peddling (beggaring-in-disguise).

What a stark contrast it is! One sitting in posh office earning more than half a million dollars while the other on public walkway earning God-knows-what!

Is closing-one-eye policy a mayoral practice?

    Why no picture, no sound?

    Errr…. Zzzzz on the job?

This title is just a $$$-sharing scheme for loyal cronies.

These people not good enough to be office holder yet need to be paid extra to keep them loyal.

Others go to temasek to sit in an office & get a big salary.

Some more others go to NTUC to get a good salary & just need to pretend to care about workers.

Even the mayor of the whole of New York does not get half of what a mayor in Singapore earns.

The genius of the PAP is that nobody questions this. I don’t know who’s my mayor or if I even have one. There is no way even to ask if this is reasonable. Singaporeans are really sheep. If people accept things without questioning, they will lose their country. That’s what’s happening.

The much reviled NKF guy earned 600K, That’s a lot, but at least I could see what he was doing. He did raise funds without taxing people. The mayors ? I don’t know. They may be good people but what good are they doing to justify their pay?

PM Lee, please don’t publicly thank people who earn 660K a year. They aren’t forced to do that job and they have already been thanked enough when they get their paycheck. Thank people who volunteer and spend their own time and money doing good,

The father bought the allegiance of his hand chosen 2-G cadres with big money.

Dr. Goh & Dr. Toh could not agree with Lee’s handling of the people’s CPF savings for the GLCs nor also the personal piggy-bank Medisave Lee insisted on; ie. without accounting transparency and without sharing the pie of the GLC profits with the contributing public. In fact, under Dr. Goh every Singapore citizen received “Singapore Telecom” dividends back in 1986 – the vision was for a collective Singapore Co-Operative. But once LKY had replaced the founding fathers with his 2-G cadres, he proceeded to close the public accounts books of the CPF and to win his elitist company over with sky high salaries that still shocks the modern democratic cohorts of the world.

We Singaporeans (highly educated or not so, also sama-sama) outside of their crony networks have been reduced to siasuay sheeples and economic digits in the Emperor’s Sinchiapor Incorporated which professes trickle-down economics and preaches water-existentialism to dried-up grannies and grandpas & their little grandchildren hahaha!

People in the PAP, after elected into Parliament, will be given a cookie jar. Mayors are given an extra.

These cookie jars are fully filled by taxpayers. This way no one can say they dip into the cookie jar when everyone has a personal one.

@Simon; you want to know what happened to Mayor Zainudin Nordin’s corruption case, look into the carpet.

  • pap island of 3.5m citizens:

by Darwin’s law, natural selection is the truth. if year in year out despite additions to citizen pool from the outside the number hovers around 3m, it means it is 3m for quality of life.

    alas.

pap due to warped concept of economic growth, thinks the more mouth mouths the better. pap fails to see it ain’t true this more mouths more GDP growth concept, as clearly shown by India Indians some 1 billion of them and all are between 3rd and 4th world.

    worse.

more mouths mean more rubbish, more water use, more congestion, smaller over priced HDB rental units, lower quality of life due to all the over crowding, pap blames local born sheep for the pap created mess.

we the 39% have never agreed on population more than 3m.

we rightly say the PRs are economic parasites.

we believe strongly global warming is not due to plastics use but rather the cramming of too many mouths in a too small island.

  • I Know:

The sole purpose of appointing (not electing) mayors is to ensure that even if all constituencies within a CDC falls to the opposition, there will still be a PAP persona handing out bursary awards, social assistance funds, etc.

  • PAP "featherbedding":

Featherbedding is the practice of hiring more workers than are needed to perform a given job, or to adopt work procedures which appear pointless, complex and time-consuming merely to employ additional workers. The term “make-work” is sometimes used as a synonym for featherbedding.

The Peoples Association (PAP) is also “featherbedding”. It costs over a billion a year. It real objective is to provide employment to PAP supporters.

    WakeupSG:
Mayor is like CEO of an org, the country’s town chief is a wrong designation to use in SG context a little red dot!

Too highly paid for doing practically nothing as it is a duplication of MPs duties in SG context!

I suggest GRCs MPs nominate an MP I/C among themselves to lead. But if there is a senior Minister or Minister then simply appoint an assistant MP to be I/C.

Obviously for SMC the elected MP will be the only one to lead.

    Tio boh?

I think the Party Against People is the most “money-faced” political party in the world. They have the highest paid politicians in the whole planet. They also created five Mayors for their five clowns (who cannot become minishots), to earn more $$$ as Mayors and as MPs. Why need extra posts ? Are they telling us their elected MPs with so many degrees cannot hold themselves and serve the residents ? This is purely a wrong way of spending taxpayer moneys to pay out extra thousands of $$$$ for Mayors in a tiny island. Would you be surprised that in future, they might create more posts in a form of Deputy Mayors (5 nos) for another 5 more white clowns !! No wonder our country’s reserves cannot be revealed, i.e. must be kept secret at all time ! Rmbr “sweet cake” says so.

  • Pls wake up:

LHL, S$600,000 x 5 equal to S$3 million Singapore Dollars. Why do we need the 5 mayors when we already have the MPs in place ? And some more we have Ministers, Ministers of State, senior civil servants etc..

What are their jobs to justify the world highest pay ? Anything fantastic?

You are indeed wasting public money . 3 millions dollars can be used to help the unemployed and the sick and old people in Singapore. And now there are many people out of jobs and worrying about how to put food on the table.

Its time for all of you to wake up please.

  • Why High Pay?:

In my opinion, the high pay is to buy their loyalty. Once they get the high pay, they will not dare to speak up or question the leaders or any policies in Parliament.

Ok, now than you know. Actually it is a fact.

I think you missed it when someone had said; “When you raise ministers’ salaries to the point that they’re earning millions of dollars, every minister… will hesitate when he thinks of his million-dollar salary. When the salary is so high, which minister dares to leave, unless they decide to become the opposition party? As a result, the entire political arena has become a civil service, and I don’t see anyone speaking up anymore,”

  • Next .. Siphoning off MEDISAVE:

Soon Medishield Life can be used for Addiction Medical Cases. Since Medishield Life is compulsory, people’s Medisave will be syphoned-off to pay increased Medishield Life Premiums. Medical costs will continue to rise. And GDP will be artificially inflated (for higher bonuses for “You-Know-Who”).

Healthy-lifestyle people will bear the medical costs of unhealthy-lifestyle people. This is inequitable.

They should only allow Addiction Medical Cases to be paid from their own (or their family members’) MEDISAVE and NOT Medishield, So that those who live healthy lifestyle (by keeping off unhealthy addictive habits) will not be penalized/burdened to bear others’ unhealthy lifestyle.
