Minimum Wage

I applaud Pritam Singh for pushing for minimum wage (MW) in Parliament for the weakest and most vulnerable low income Singaporean workers among us.

To begin, Singapore is a very expensive place to live in and many of our very low income workers also have families to look after. I have never believed that today’s very well-paid and well-fed pap MPs and ministars, although many of them profess to come from low income families, are able to empathise with the struggles, fears and plights of our very low income workers fully.

The only issue that I have with Singh’s push for having a MW is the quantum, ie, S$1,300/per month.

The amount is meaningless if the number of working hours are not taken into consideration. The legislated working hours in Singapore is 44 hours per week. If workers are paid $1,300 but work a 55 hours week, although paying $1,300 satisfies the MW but on the other hand, that’s, pure and simple, exploitation of labour too.
Furthermore, many ad hoc, informal and part-time work are not included in the ambit of Singh’s $1,300/ monthly MW proposal.

I suggest that a fairer and better way to pay low income workers would be to pay them based on an hourly rate and subject to annual review taking into consideration our inflation rate and other business related costs etc. Requirements for skill-upgrading need not be mutually exclusive with a MW adoption too.

Think.

  • Begging wage:

Other countries have minimum wage and living wage. Living wage is a level that affords some standard of living.

Singapore is proud to have a begging wage. With a begging wage, you have to beg for more money to survive.

  • Harder Truths:

Minimum wage will not do much as long as the FT problem is not solved. It is just a distraction. No one seems to dare look at the FT elephant standing right in the center of the room.

  • $1300 pm:

Actually $1300 pm is hard to survive for a family in expensive Singapore.
OK to set it as minimum wage but pegged it to the max numbers of hours per week.
Sometime it is sickening to hear from people who has never experience poverty talking as though they understand the poor. They should try living one month on $1300 for their family.
Don’t be like the PWM for Security Officer…have to work 12×6 hours per week to earn a decent wage. Those who make such policy and the Security agency owners should try to work for a month a life of a security officer at 12 x 6 hrs week.Insane to allowed this to happen.Weak leadership.

We expect our Seniors to work such a life…no wonder so many of them will have health issues. Some even ask them to work 2 shifts because of shortage of manpower.Asking for health trouble.

A *minimum* wage is VERY SUBJECTIVE in a CONSTANTLY RUNNING AWAY COST OF LIVING ENVIRONMENT like $IN CITY because the GAHMEN iare also counted amongst THE RANK OF THE RICH & GREEDY?

OUR COST OF LIVING IS SIMPLY * IRRATIONAL* N BECOMING MORE N MORE * UNAFFORDABLE* for many poor n even NEW POOR ( the jobless PMEs)?..

I think GOVT COST should be brought down to set an example.
Our COST OF GAHMEN IS SIMPLY TOO HIGH AND THIS CAUSES THE GOVT TO COLLECT MORE MONEY ,to some great extent, to sustain their TOP OF THE WORLD SALARIES N PEN$ion$.

Also, TOWN COUNCIL$ IS RATHER COST-INEEFICIENT IN OUR TINY RED DOT AS IT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR MORE EFFECTIVE ECONOMY OF SCALE.

Town council functions used to be done better when it is in-house and centralised compared to current decentralised out-$ourcing.
This is being proved by so much more improperly kept public spaces like our littered roads, for example.

Furthermore, MPs should have more meaningful work like taking care of citizens and ensuring good law-making.

I am sure RETURNING TO MORE CENTRALISED PUBLOC SPACE UPKEEPING CAN WORK BETTER THAN DECENTRALIZED TOWN COUNCILS THAT WOULD KEEP OUR TINY red dot CLEAN N GREEN again and cut costs for citizens as a consequence of more efficiencies n economy of scale.

  • New Normal:

The difference between legalised min. wage & govt pwm is setting a decent, respectable, recognizable min. & promotes healthy attitude towards menial task which is unlike the progressive type which is subject to abuse by d**honourable employer who cunningly shortchanged the employee like the Liyani’s case & it takes too long a time to reach the desirable min. as the employers naturally drags their feet to pay the min. progressively. The progressive wage model type will end up being REGRESSIVE!

Of course, if generous employers pay employees above the legalised min. wage is most welcome & all this min. wage policy hope to achieve is to promote a positive attitude towards menial work & chief of all the sense of worth as menial workers!

ABOVE ALL, THE BEST OUTCOME IS A HAPPY EMPLOYER-EMPLOYEE WORKING RELATIONSHIP THAT WILL IMPROVE WORK PERFORMANCE & CO. PRODUCTIVITY!

  • So what's new in Papaland?:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/30/minimum-wage-maximum-wage-income-inequality

Conservatives and elitists try to laugh off the idea of capping executive pay – but it’s an idea with a distinguished history….. none other than Singapore’s founding fathers Dr. Goh and Mr. Hon Sui Sen dissented from LKY’s political innovation: the Pappy-CEO $$$ creature. Where is the “check & balance” line to be drawn after this?

  • Mindlesscrummywork:

What utter rubbish by people and leaders from opposing sides who fight for wages of lower income.
Both sides are far from noble when they fight for the right amount of CRUMBS to be paid for a day of working to keep the businessman or company/corporation profitable or earning sinful wages themselves.

It is disgraceful, and even immoral, to even mention minimum wage or flexi or progressive wage.

It is an insult to humanity to be paid such a sum for working off one’s life to make someone very rich while their lives are worse than domesticated dogs.

Face it, the economy created by both, the opposition and the incumbent, has produced a greater or much greater number of BAD JOBS than good jobs for the people.

BAD JOBS, any job you are not happy in(enslaved) and paid by crumbs, are a social problem, and ill, which no politician is honest about it or dare face the damning truth

  • Change We Must:

agree with Simon. I also believe minimum hourly rate is better and to prevent those low wage workers of being exploit further.
Not sure how WP arrived at $1300. IF WP believes the monthly minimum wage is better than the current government scheme of enhancing low wage workers income then they have to explain to Singaporeans why is it better? As no system is perfect, list down the pros and cons as well.

  • PAP CLOSE DOWN:

Let’s just sum it up. Everyone from blue collar to PMETs are severely underpaid. Want to get rich? Be the boss.

Unfortunately, Sporeans are mind controlled to be servile and submissive servants.
