When elected MP can vote corruptly

In a parliamentary democracy, the government is elected by the majority of the MPs in parliament.

The political party that has the largest number of elected MPs normally forms the government. Sometimes, several parties have to join together in a coalition to form the government.

In some countries, the elected MPs may move to another political party and support the other party to form the government.

This could lead to corrupt practices as the MPs that crossed over could be bribed by offer of office that convey a lot of power and authority.

How can this be prevented?

Singapore has implemented a law stating that when a MP moves to another party, he (or she) will have to stand by re-election to keep that office.

This is a good practice.

However, it is the practice of the political party to impose a “whip” that requires its MPs to vote according to the party line, i.e. the policy of the party. This prevents the MP from voting according to their best personal judgment and conscience.

If the “whip” is removed”, it may also lead to corruption as a MP can be bribed to cast the vote in a certain direction.

This seems to be a serious flaw under the democratic system – i.e. that the elected MP might be bribed to cast the votes in a certain manner for personal benefits.

If the corrupt practice is rampant, what is the point of having a democracy?

  • Beg your pardon?:

“Singapore has implemented a law stating that when a MP moves to another party, he (or she) will have to stand by re-election to keep that office.

    This is a good practice.”

Are you sure that this is good practice? No. No. This turns MPs into rubber stamps. Especially when there’s lots of money involved.

The UK (and Singapore’s original practice) way of allowing MPs to join other parties is very good. The PM has to have good convincing policies or his own party MPs will vote him off. No rubber stamps there.

SG is just a fake democracy, unlike US which the President can be checked and balanced by independent civil service. As much as we do not like Trump, Trump is not above the law, he is getting ready to run after losing election this November. Do you think this will have to ours? Our model resembles Chinese or NKorean model that the supreme leader has total control of army and civil service. Who has ever taken our Supreme Leader to courts and won? None.
Those who spoke against the policies and leaders were all demoted or send to wither-land.

Many of them are paid millions to be obedient dogs, who dares to utter a word against? By the next term, he may be asked to retire prematurely, this explains you have all the yes men and paper generals in politics.

There is no real check and balance until we are fully democractic with independent civil service.

Think about LT’s recent arrest at his office, you tell me

At the end of the day, whatever system is NOT IMPORTANT. The MOST IMPORTANT of any Government on planet earth is the INTEGRITY of the individual MP and by extension that of their Head or LEEder! The CONSCIENCE of EACH and EVERY individual MUST BE VERY CLEAR when discharging their DUTY TO THE COUNTRY and CITIZEN who have VOTED HER OR HIM INTO PARLEEMENT, period!

A good example of WHAT the REAL MEANING of INTEGRITY and CONSCIENCE are, was shown on 3/4 July 2017 in the ParLeeMent when the whole lot of PAPigs MPs VOTED to EXONERATE their DISHONORABLE LEEder from being accused by OWN HIS SIBLINGS of using state organ to abuse his power!

The law preventing MPs to switch parties is undemocratic, unconstitutional and dictatorship’s modus operandi.

The WHIP is also undemocratic, unconstitutional and dictatorship’s modus operandi.

Party interests must not override national interests.

Most of the time power blinds and kills the conscience of cunning and crafty politicians, who allow their own party interests to override national interests. This happens in the UK, the US, Japan, India, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and elsewhere.

We have only to look at what is happening in our Northern neighbour to see the havoc jumping parties without repercussions can cause. And the situation is still chaotic at the moment.

Whatever system is adopted, there will always tge chance of corruption taking place.

TKL argues that a party using the party whip will result in rubber stamping by the MPs. He should realise that a party has its own manifesto and policies to fight for. If a member of the party cannot agree, he/she should leave. And the whip is for this purpose and not to have members just rubber stamp its stand.

Any disagreements about the party stand is and should be decided within the party first and done outside public domain. The issue of rubber stamping does not arise then.

There is a book called the “The calculus of Consent: Logical Foundations of Constitutional Democracy”.

Public institutions are supposed to be social planners, and create conditions for a well functioning political-economy, for as many as possible. The understanding is that the market reacts to incentives or otherwise to adroitly or quickly move to a direction that is good for the community.

But it is also clear that the social planners are humans that they, themselves need to be incentivized. It is just not about the policy, but also the motivations and incentives that politicians have when creating that policy.

PAP thinks that high pay will create those conditions for impartial social planners. But the reality in Singapore is that political competition will bring about better incentives for good policies. Even when there is no corruption, behaviorial economists had shown inertia is heavy in any policy changes, thus, the impetus must be a threat u can get kick out of office.

You are going in circle or recycling what’s commonly known about the failure or unjust political system but still supported by leaders from all stratus of societies, by the people too, and for obvious reasons such as huge reward or monies for those who rise in social status or political power and potential wealth or prosperity accessable to all(half truth lie).

Why the people, even through democratic process, keep voting/empowering the rich(rise in wealth and social status) into power nobody cares to question.

Fact is, the almighty economy is breeding ground for hypocrisy and wickedness.

The end/ destruction under the rich and powerful(through the economy) is a matter of time.

  • PAP is THE PROBLEM:

There is only one way to fix the problem. The solution is openness and transparency in the public sectors and basic freedoms for Singaporeans (i.e., make Singapore a REAL democracy). Then corrupt or “useless” MPs can be voted out. This is not possible as long as PAP is in control and Singapore a fake democracy. Again, PAP is THE PROBLEM.

Call it economic democracy, socialism, democratic communism, or whatever else you like. I don’t see how we can achieve equality or transcendent meaning with a patchwork identity politics enforced by folks who are dividing themselves into groups and continually employing straw man arguments. Whether people on habitually employ straw man arguments is a question of fact we can each decide for ourselves.

The government has become a zombie democracy since the entire system in this country is clearly a two tier system, rigged to favor the wealthy who can buy high priced defense attorneys and punish the poor who cannot, it is not surprising that the rot now extends to the top.

Apparently short of an act of God that removes these men, nothing can stop the runaway train that has put money in charge of everything.
