32,000 workers take home less than $1300 each month

I will be blunt with my comments.

Koh Poh Koon disclosed in Parliament that about 32,000 workers take home less than $1300 each month, a minimum wage (MW) sum lower than what was proposed by WP’s Pritam Singh.

So, what does that tell us?

It told me a few things. One, setting our proposed MW at $1300 is too conservative. Singapore under the pap government has raced to become the most expensive county in the world to live in and many among those 32,000 workers have families to look after. How could any better off fellow citizens with an iota of conscience look the other way or adopt a couldn’t be bothered attitude?

Two, 32,000 workers is a very big number of workers and an even bigger tight slap to the pap government’s cheek. I say shame on you to pap ministars such as Josephine Teo, Koh PK, shame to Ng Chee Meng, shame to NTUC and their tripartite bulls etc.

I challenge all of them and all others who are against paying MW to our most vulnerable workers to try and survive on $1300/ monthly for 6 months and then we can perhaps have more meaningful discussions after that about having or not having MW in Singapore.

Thirdly, to me, Koh’s arguments were indeed masterpiece strawman. All the concerns that he raised, be it handicapped workers or others, although they were valid concerns but they are not insurmountable challenges.
It must prick the conscience of every right thinking citizens knowing that the pap ministers know how to pay themselves minimum wage at the top but deny those weakest and the most vulnerable workers among us their little survival breads.

I propose that we start off our MW with $1400/monthly and do it with urgency. I further suggest that we indexed the MW to our inflation rate in order to preserve it purchasing power.

Last but not least, I strongly suggest that our unions, their employers and MOM hand hold every single one of those workers, guide them, train and upskill them in real and tangible ways, take the challenge upon themselves to monitor their career progression regularly and show them the way forward to earn better wages because any more talks in Parliament without any real concrete actions on the ground to help them are a waste of everybody’s time, energy and resources.

What more talks will achieve is only to make pap MPs and ministers look good and fattens their pockets along the way.

Think.

I think one should look at the stats with suspicion. The PAP is good at bluffing its citizens and the world for the sake of headlines.

Therefore, what is produced as statistics for public consumption is not the same figures, the PAP has for their own use.

Some years back a University of Singapore Economics don, did some research and published a paper that, from memory, indicated the PAP employed more Malaysian than Singaporeans. The University don used stats availble publicly in arriving at his conclusion.

There was this big hue and cry from the politicians to decried the conclusion drawn. So meetings with the Government took place and it seems that there was a different set of stats not available to the public. Of course, the University don retreated, apologised and mysteriously let the scene.

The moral of this story is that there are different sets of stats published. It is a practice that should be reviewed after the PAP is removed. In my view, the duplicity of the PAP is without bounds.

  • Look carefully:

Yes, this very likely include all the overtime pay, and DOUBLE or triple jobs, and taxpayer money top up.

BTW, why is this gov using our taxpayer money to top up low salary, and thereby supporting the exploitation by employers?

    Read carefully.

  • Tremendous:

Chiefs from a certain group want their MR4 or mayor pays without question. Includes all new bird chiefs. They want to serve villagers on their million dollar terms without minimum pays for those at the lower ends. But 61% idiots supported these chiefs. None of them have even 10% calibre to raise the fertility rate to 1.3. The village will not last because the idiot pool is too big.

  • Pap has the mandate:

Comments from PAP and their supporters:

    faked news

    MINIMUM WAGE

If costs increase, businesses will do one of these things.

Reduce the cost ( sack people ), pass on the costs as increased prices to their consumers, or absorb the costs.

    Real news
Businesses will not sack people because of minimum wages as they have already calibrated the right number of resources. On passing the increased prices to their consumers is already happened every year as companies want to maximize profit and minimize cost such as not supporting the minimum wage. The minimum wage should be calibrated per hr and index with CPI.

Remember, PAP and its supporters always said Singapore is a First world country then follow all first world countries in implementing the minimum wage/ hr and index with CPI.

Remember, PAP and its ministers are paid millions of dollars in accordance to the top 10% earners and yet these millions of dollars useless PAP Clowns have no accountability, no responsibility and no transparency.

  • Harder Truths:

    Simon

Wages should not be dictated by the government. That is socialism and only gets one part of society to pay for another. It does not solve the problem either. The problme is FT – get rid of them and jobs become available in many areas. Why you ignore such fundamentals I cannot understand.

Bona-fide $G – born who are old (and not FT coming here to retire) can be given a PENSION to help them live a DECENT life. This money can be taken from the INDECENT wages of the regime ministers, civil servants and FT working in $G.

  • Seriously:

While we argue this matter to no end, many businesses are busy thinking of ways to reduce the need for workers at this pay bracket, and automate them out of jobs.

In all likelihood, if those workers’ remain as they are in terms of ability and attitudes, any salary gains are likely to be narrow and for a select few only. Two steps forward, three steps back. And when this happens, don’t be surprised when salaries sink even further.

It is a complex issue. Raising pay is just one aspect of it, and it likely to be outpaced by rate of automation. The other aspect is what scope is there to arm them with better skills to justify the higher salaries, and this is a far bigger challenge.

While all of us want higher salaries, we also have to justify those higher salaries. The real question is what we can do to justify those higher salaries – it is higher efficiency, is it better quality, is it better service delivery? All this talk of demanding higher salaries is starting to unjustifiably demonise corporations.
