Does Social Media Grows A Conscience?

We have always had conspiracy theorists, nut jobs and the ill informed, the difference today is that with the internet and numerous social-media platforms they are more visible more vocal and have greater reach. People think lots of foolish and crazy ideas. Some think the Earth is flat. Some think the Earth is hollow with dinosaurs in the center. Some think the sun rotates around the Earth. Some think the moon landings were fake and done on a sound stage. Some believe in Scientology and spend vast sums to get membership. Some believe in buying lottery tickets as a retirement plan. Some believe in Satanic cults of pedophiles running sex slave children in the basement of a pizza parlor… Some believe in magic or elves or sprites or druids… Or space aliens and flying saucers visiting Earth. Qanon may be a series of ever metastasizing conspiracy theories. But they are promoted with specific motives in mind. Follow the money.

This is why it is so important to have balance in groups–people who disagree with one another and push back against ‘group speak.’ Conflict and conflicting views, are healthy for society, so long as there exists a process for achieving agreement and hopefully consensus. And so long as everyone buys into the process. I don’t think I’m being naive nor overly optimistic, but I predict that, once Trump is out of office, his presence and influence will quickly fade, and once his influence has diminished, you will see the whole QAnon phenomenon fade rather quickly too. I don’t think QAnon can flourish on its own; it has always been dependent on the Trump cult of personality.

You can’t force people to read accurate sources. People will believe what they want to, never bothering to consider other sources or to fact check things they hear that sounds strange. How does a group like QAnon take hold? To an outsider it is somewhat mysterious. One vital perspective is to understand it as a cult. Destructive cults are not merely harmful belief systems. They include such, but the mysterious part, how people come to be slavishly devoted to such a group, is not well understood. Until we understand this we will “tsk, tsk” from afar or try to reason with those involved. (To no avail.) The beliefs may even morph while the adherents stay slavishly devoted to the group. Robert J. Lifton’s Eight Criteria for Thought Reform is one place to start. [LINK]

Tech giants were right to ban the president. The thing that is most interesting about Twitter Trump’s imminent exit is what has been going on behind the scenes at Twitter. Its stock is 3X where it was when Trump took office, with no doubt much of its value a result of a President that used it as his primary communication vehicle. Don’t think for a second that these companies are doing it out of some altruistic belief in democracy. Far from it: It’s a cold, calculated move to put the brakes on the slow-moving train wreck that has been the Trump administration since its inception. FaceBook, Twitter, Amazon, Fox News (to name just a few) have made BILLIONS off of this man. That they’re “de-platforming” him (interesting word, that) is only to prevent their gravy train from flying off the tracks. Once Trump’s out of the limelight I predict they’ll go back to doing exactly what they’ve always done: Profits over people.

THAT is why they need to be reigned in, as the EU is doing: Their power lies not so much in their size, but in their access and exploitation of user data and personal information. Keep that in mind: It’s not enough just to break them up; the US government also needs to limit their ability to build and maintain their monopoly power. The intent would not be to stifle free speech but to contain the dangerous content pollution that is being created and widely disseminated via these relatively new means of communication. Twitter and others! Parler can setup their own servers. They don’t have to depend on Amazon. Unless the Internet carrier will deny them access or domain service will refuse to maintain their domain name. Then they can go back to publishing their stuff in print in a small circulation paper. And that’s where they belong.

The attempted violent overthrow of the the Government of the United States is really, really, really bad for business. Imagine a world without the stability of the US Dollar, US Treasuries, a functioning Congress, or the rule of law backing up markets. People need to sober up.

2020 in its largest part coincided with the Lunar Calendar Year of the Rat, which will end on February 12, 2021 when the Lunar Calendar Year of the Ox begins. That Year of the Rat brought us very bad things, like the pandemic and all bad consequences derived from it. But at least, as it goes away on February, that the Year of the Rat will be taking away with it the largest, most dirty, most stinking of all rats. Whoa! I mean the Covid-19.

By all means, private entities have all its right in freedom of action to do whatever censorship they thought necessary or applicable. First Amendment 'guaranteed' that and section 230 provides immunity.

Thus it is also eye opening for me to see a dictator censored by its private citizen. First on earth. What do we call a dictator who had his account suspended? Ironically hilarious.

Perhaps someone will help give me an enlightenment on whether we evolved from apes or fish? Charles Darwin said we were apes but how about apes? Perhaps he was the greatest fake news generator of our hominid history. Disagree?

    @ SojouRner & @ Mike

Brilliant thoughts from @ SojouRner and @ Mike, I like your comment below as much too.

America is very resilient because of its DEMOCRATIC TRADITIONS and the titanium strength of its liberal institutions. They may be shaken from time to time – from Vietnam anguish to Afghanistan to Iraq, but never vanquished or broken at its core.

Nixon was toppled in Watergate, Trump disgraced of its disinformation and insurrection of the Constitution but humiliated by peasants-run technological platforms (it won’t happen anywhere else except in very strong democracies like Australia, UK, NZ, Canada etc etc). These ignominies befallen on the US will pass.

Charles A Reich wrote – the Greening of America, Gen MacAuthur promised I shall return to Philippines (he did!).

America will see rejuvenation. It is NOT a society ruled by dictatorship and exploitative few enriching only themselves and the rest (the peasants) just working in the system to provide that nourishment. Trump failed of his re-election attempt despite his extremities of political adventurism appealing to depravity of human greed, hate and divisiveness politics.

Economically, Trumponomics is a disaster. Voters can see it. Those who voted for Republicans GOP are NOT ALL REPUBLICAN CAUSE supporters. They include far right white supremacists to QAnon, and the disenfranchised. Trump got financial support from billionaires. And the judges Trump elevated ruled against him (of his vile attempt to overturn the election results) in the court. And now Mitch McConnell kicked his a*se openly on impeachment call.

Now that Trump have fallen from the stage, the parasites feasting of Trumppolitics will disperse and his diehard supporters/rioters in Capitol in moment of dangers WERE BETRAYED by Trump’s volte-face.

The Republican Party in Trump’s manipulation imploded and disintegrated.

A NEW FUTURE WILL INVOLVE IN US POLITICS UNDER BIDEN – less divisive politics and more unified, coherent of recovery agenda. Or at least I hope now that Democrats are in control of Congress, White House and the Senate.

    @ oxy
I couldn’t agree more, that’s been a pet peeve of mine. Biden has at least two years to (potentially) get a lot done, and he shouldn’t hold back at all. Covid and the economy are obviously the top priorities, but repairing (to the extend possible) relationships with foreign allies, rebuilding the building blocks of society and global warming..Since Biden has been a moderate, reach-across-the-aisle politician, as soon as he hits the ground running, he should also have a candid, and very direct, talk with McConnell. Too much is at stake. America needs Biden to lead and deliver. The clock starts ticking on 1/20.

    Morning bros, interesting comments!

A profound change is happening in western democracies. The stability and growth stagnation had shifted the value system.

“In the attempt to stabilize and secure themselves, open societies react with 1. a trend from democratic to republican traits, i.e. from a basis-participatory to a more representational system; 2. a trend of ‘state capturing’ by parties and political actors, which means to modify institutions in one’s favor after winning an election so to secure the win in the next one, thus putting party politics and interests above the national good; and 3. the return of the ‘strong man’ as a desire of many citizens now also in democracies, including the younger generations.”

Contrary to the west, except Philippines, democracies in the East have shown no such shifts, in fact, u can argue the young are asking for greater participation.

It is not about West or East ideas, but the best ideas that can help us achieve personal freedom and economic progress.

If one asks why it is the Pacific century, I would say this holding onto participatory political values is such a contributing factor.

China is an important engine, but it has never really project values as much as absorbing values. I would not be surprised the political change in China is the contextual reality of prospering with Asean, Japan, South Korea and India. It will be decades though.

It’s been a steady descent into radicalism over the last forty years as right wing oligarchs built a massive disinformation and misinformation propaganda industrial complex and echo chamber that has largely disemboweled the average American’s ability to see objective reality rather more pluralistic coalition.

A two party system is not sustainable unless both parties seek a majority of the votes with a positive program while upholding the rules of the game. The GOP seeks to deny the inherent pluralism of the country and base its power on a set of minority interests.

The runaway Republican freight train is not a recent Trumpian phenomenon. The handwriting has been on the wall for years. McConnell and the GOP chose to not even have a legitimate trial in the Senate in January 2020. By then it was very clear that Trump was a bad actor, but the GOP chose to lie and deflect instead of holding him accountable.

First remember that Trump has been called out for almost 30,000 LIES since he became POTUS……………and he continued to incite his followers to mount an insurrection against the very bastion of democrary against ALL norms of ANYONE who wants to be POTUS. There can NEVER be any compromise when the person involved ONLY has self-interest in mind like the wayang-party MPs of the likes of Low Thia Khiang (until last year); Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, He Ting Ru, Jamus Lim, Denis Tan etc.

Just like Twitter, Facebook etc PERMANENTLY BAN Donald Trumps falsehoods and LIES, TOC & TRE should do likewise to the band of cowards and low life forms including but not limited to Chee Soon Juan and his acolytes from the SDP and the wayang-party MPs & IBs from making use of TOC/TRE to troll, lie and harass genuine views based on the FACTS & REALITIES of the failures of the so-called oppos and the emperor without clothes disastrous policies which his own Minister Chan Chun Sing had warned about in his sombre public message. How many sinkies should die preventable death and travesties of justice and having their jobs taken away by so-called FTs; rising cost of living & medical expenses well beyond many people’s affordability notwithstanding the PGP & Merdeka schemes which incidentally had NOT been the result of the efforts of the likes of the wayang-party MP of almost 30 years, Low Thia Khiang, Chee Soon Juan etc, when it was I…..I repeat I, I, I who had suggested to then Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan who I remember was once the PAP Chairman that the emperor without clothes regime spend higher returns from our reserves. in a public dialogue session in January 2008………………while the so-called wayang-party & the likes of Chee Soon Juan blamed the introduction of POFMA etc, which could only be half truths……………as I hv conclusively shown their false excuses…….

But to interpret the discussion in terms of liberalism and authoritarianism overlooks better possibilities. In China, the political Confucians are proposing an alternate approach: the Humane Authority Way. The issue of electoral authority lies at the center of their constitutional thinking. Legitimacy is not about what people think about their rulers; it is the deciding factor in determining whether a monarch has the right to govern.

Taiwan and Hong Kong tell us that Chinese people value democracy and human rights no less than anyone else in the world. China’s growing per capita income will awaken people to ask for the same. According to University of Chicago professor John Mearscheimer, China’ rise won’t be a peaceful one. Like the U.S., it will assert itself as a regional hegemon with a Chinese version of the Monroe Doctrine for Asia. From regional hegemon, China will want to achieve world hegemon status.

Here I disagreed with Prof. Mearscheimer’s prediction. I can see China becoming dominant in East Asia politically and militarily but not in the world arena. I can see the U.S. keeping this title for decades to come. China appears stronger because the U.S. has become weaker.

And political actors lie WITH INTENT TO DECEIVE the masses, Mao and Juncker not excluded.

Famous quote from late Chairman Mao Zedong: The masses’ eyes are discerning. We would like to share it with all those taking public hearings as cosmetic.

And Trump beats both to heavenly heights before his election in 2016 and Mt Everest heights’ more after got into political office. His closest advisers include Kellyanne Conway who has gone mute post the election of her “alternative facts”.

BOTTOMLINE IS LYING IS THE ESCAPE IN DARKNESS of all truths for political actors and in crisis, THEY USE THIS ESCAPE ROUTE.

I just watch the recording of the 158th ranked Straits Times on the interview of Pritam Singh by Sumiko Tan……………..and its just such a waste of time and a total misuse of $ to appoint Pritam as the Leader of the opposiiton…………so as to allow the emperor with clothes to continue with his failed policies. …………

The problem with Trump is not only that he lies (all politicians lie strategically at least some of the time, but still attempt to preserve their credibility by at least not contradicting the truth most of the time).

The bigger problem is that he appears to believe his own lies, double-down and act on them. This self-created reality was already pointed out by investigative journalist (like myself) Tony Schwartz, and the birther of Obama and Jersey City-9/11 controversies made it more than obvious, so the press and the public were amply forewarned.

The question is an important one. How do I “ascertain” what is true? There are many strategies for uncovering the truth. All of them involve work. Investigation. Asking questions. Sifting evidence. Testing. Thinking, etc., etc.

Why, for some strange reason, that it is easier to deceive than convince another of the truth… Why is that? Could it be because there are thousands of falsehoods for every truth?

In 1831, Arthur Schopenhauer published “The Art of Controversy” [“Die Kunst, Recht zu Behalten”], also translated as “The Art of Being Right”
