Tanjong Pagar speeding accident

It was most tragic and most unnecessary that 5 young lives were lost in that Tanjong Pagar speeding accident.

So far, much attention have been focused on the High Speed Racing Cars (HSRC) on our roads. As a person with many years of driving experiences on our roads, I feel that we must go beyond that and address some basic issues if we really hope to have safer roads for all users.

Any vehicle in the hands of an irresponsible, speeding or reckless driver can kill. Even a speeding pmd in the hands of such a rider could maim and even kill somebody too.

Generally speaking, today’s younger generation, despite their better education and better standard of living are a more selfish, more self-centred, more inconsiderate, more self-entitled and ill-brought up lots compare to people of their parent’s and grandparent’s generations. A generation of people who had much less but behaved much more human and better.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the results of the failed pap so called ‘world class education’ and we as a society is paying the price.

I have a few suggestions.

I hope that LTA and the Traffic Police can be firmer when dealing with speedsters and penalties for such offences be further enhanced including mandatory licence suspension even for 1st time offenders for speed exceeding certain limits.

New drivers to be put on 2 years instead of just 1 year provision licence and speeding offences committed during that period must have punitive consequences in order to drill in the messages of safe and responsible driving.

It is reasonable to assume that buyers of HSRCs buy them in order to enjoy the thrills of speeding. I suggest that such cars can only be sold to and driven by people not younger than 35 years old with substantial extra taxes added onto it. Offenders could face jail sentences.

During driving lessons, defensive driving attitudes and mentality must be incalculated deeply into the psyche of all learner drivers and if they stick, my wish is that they can stick with the drivers for life.

The driver of that mangled BMW car was so irresponsible and I have no sympathies for him whatsoever.

I wondered if his friends travelling together in that ill-fated car even tried to dissuade him or egged him on. Even as passengers, everybody has a part to play to minimise any potential accidents from happening and everybody must understand that. It is after all in their own interest not to be a quiet and unthinking sucker.

Think.

Happy Lunar New Year to all and stay safe always.

  • Harder Truths:

The intention should be to get rid of these unnecessary drivers. We should have a race course specially built for such idiots where they can crash and kill themselves. This will help us to keep the roads safe. Also we should have this televised as entertainment on MediaCorpse to boost their abysmal ratings.

Funeral parlors can sponsor the events and advertise their special deals during the commercials. Car restoration companies can sponsor the drivers. We can also get rid of the F1 at the same time.

$G can apply to the UNESCO for a this to be a cultural event and gain protection from copycats.

Let us not waste a great way to make the roads safer, entertain us, give local companies some way to make money and kill off these drving idiots at the same time.

  • If I am not wrong, after reading the news, all 5 who died were in the M6 and are males. Then there was this courageous female who reportedly burned herself (80% jialut jialut) trying to save her late boyfriend. Was she on top of the car or was she hiding in the car booth, where did she came from? MSM said she was not in the car and had “ran forward” to assist when the incident happened, so was she jogging behind the M6 at a speed well over 100 km/h?

Looking at the video, the M6 was clearly speeding way over 100 when it crashed doing a small “S” followed by a hard right turn. Unless it was a tank, no one would have survived that head on. Simon is right, when everyone go around breaking the laws and regulations unfortunate incidents like these are a matter of when, not if.

If the driver had been drinking, in China, many would have called it a suicide, not an accident. They have only themselves to blame for it. NEVER allow someone who has been drinking to drive and if advice fails, DO NOT get into the car, even if the trip is only 100 meters. My brother-in-law spent 8 months in prison because he refused to listen, lucky for him, he did not kill anyone.

I don’t know how Sinkieland deals with drink driving, but in China, it’s an immediate driving ban and up to 15 days in detention (without accident). If got people die, then the driver would be starring at an average of 3 years behind bars.

As long as got alcohol in blood, regardless of the amount and when it was taken (alcohol can be from 3 days ago [过夜酒]), license 101% suspended from 6 months to 5 years. Maybe the local gahment should consider using the same yardstick as the Chinese authorities, if it has not already done so.

As for the courageous but stupid lady, I hope she survives and wishes her well.

From the video, the driver appears to be having to do a small “S” followed by a relatively easy right turn but he obviously lacks the skill set and experience for such a turn at the speed that he was traveling. (Assuming he was traveling away from Maxwell Road)

The M6 can be said to be a very good car and he probably would have made it (provided he is not too excessively over speed) if he had cut into the turn early immediately before the “S” and not take it wide into the “S”, (which is probably what he did) causing the M6 to go into a skid and spun out of control, resulting in the collision. I would also assume he had panicked (when he realised that he was too fast and the bend was too steep) and had stepped on the brake late during the final turn in the “S” contributing to the collision. ABS would not have helped at that speed, especially during a hard corner.

My hunch from the video and photos available is that he had panicked when entering the “S” (he was going too fast and when he went into the “S” with a left turn, he had to immediately do a hard right to get out of it). The M6 then either went directly into the shop houses because he panicked and did not do a right turn to get out or he did try to do a hard right turn to get out but the M6 flung and skidded.

Any experienced driver would know that when you do a left turn followed by an immediate right hard turn, any conventional cars would probably flip over or skid and at the speed that he was going, nothing he did from the moment he entered the small “S” would have mattered, even if he had slammed on the brake and the ABS had kicked in. The 5 Gentlemen’s fate was sealed the moment the M6 entered the “S”.

The only way the 5 could have avoided their sad fate was if the driver had cut into the right turn early before entering the “S”. And it would have helped greatly if the M6 had been retro-fitted with a front, bottom and back reinforced balancing beams to stablised it.

    Xiali N7

My cheapo less than RMB 80,000 family car is retro-fitted with them as China has a lot of mountains with sharp bends and they help to stabilise the car when doing a hard or 360 turn (not at 100 km/h of course).

I am not an expert but from experience, knowing the characteristics of the car that you drive is very important. What it can or cannot do would mean life and death for the driver, especially during taxing conditions.

Call me paranoid if you will, but I actually have 2 sets of tires (both hard and soft) for the cheapo car, to be interchangeable during the 4 seasons when many of my fellow drivers don’t even bother.

I also change my fully-synthetic motor oil (reputed to tahan 100,000 km) yearly or every 10,000 km, whichever is earlier. My Platinum NGK spark plugs are also changed yearly, regardless of milage. You say I siow bo? lol

ALL racing cars are fitted with the beams I suggested to keep the body stable, so the answer is YES, Ferraris alike if it wants to be used for racing and taking hard turns.

If these cars are meant for traveling (or even spoeeding) on very long expressways like those in China, then there is no need for any beams because there are no hard bends that would tax these superb cars. However, there is still a very important factor in the equation, the experience and skill set of the driver.

  • Hi!:

As one with 35 years of driving experience, including being a former public bus driver for 8 years, I must state IT IS FAILURE OF ROAD SAFETY LAW ENFORCEMENT (TP & the relevant ministry). AND FAILURE OF DRIVING SCHOOL INSTRUCTORS & THE SCHOOLS TO IMPART SAFETY HABITS TO L PLATE DRIVERS.

Encountered driving school instructors w their L plate drivers in the driving seat NOT GIVING WAY TO PEDESTRIANS, NOT FORMING HABIT TO LOOKOUT FOR PEDESTRIANS & EVEN TRAFFIC. It is not hard to imagine such bad habits are NOW reflected in Spore’s roads from such fmr L plate drivers exposed to the callous attitude IMPARTED TO THEM, who are now driving on the roads.

I’m surprised to hv witnessed such bad habits taught to learner drivers compared to the CONSCIENTIOUS SAFETY, DEFENSIVE DRILLINGS TAUGHT TO US BY OUR ARMY INSTRUCTORS IN THE 80s(being also a former NS 3 tonner truck dvr). Those old days safety conscientiousness IMPARTED & TAUGHT to us hv stayed with us.

  • Speeding or not is simple ABC, no need for Traffic to test here and get car computer then confirm. Use the video can simple simple calculate with rough accuracy.

From the video, slow-motion it and count the distance from the 1st shop to the one the M6 collided with and the time taken. The M6 speed, therefore, is distance divided by time, dio bo? As for alcohol or drugs, then have to wait for coroner liao.

Someone mentioned curb, which is completely useless when dealing with an M6 at a speed of over 100 km/h. It would simply flung the M6 upwards turning it into an ICBM or smashing it into the 2nd level of the shop houses. And if the curb is not re-enforced with steel, it would just carry the curb into the shop houses.

There are a lot of accidents in China where the roadside curb even on a bridge is completely useless when hit by a car travelling at evcen lesser speed than 100 km/h. Go Baidu and search for “accident compilations”, you will see plenty of interesting but sad cases.

Coming to retro-fitting, my opinion is that it would help greatly but in this instance, I am trusting that the M6 would have made the turn had the driver been more experience and had cut into the bend early instead of taking it wide. I took a look at the maps published by the MSM, it wasn’t that narrow a turn and it wasn’t a very hard turn to experienced drivers.

Nothing like the 250,000 underpaid politicians in North America, Europe and practically every civilized country on earth barring bicycles and especially powered bicycles (PMD’s) on pedestrian walk ways, guess this is why our MP’s make millions and the remainder of the world do care for the people but are paid peanuts.

I am sure with today’s technology, motorised vehicles can be calibrated to the required max speed for SG roads. Are the TP and LTA listening ? Remember, we have heard of vehicles’ owners doing illegal modifications to their vehicles. So, have the technicians detected them during the annual vehicle inspections ? It is high time the authorities look into the matter seriously, but with due respect to ministar in charge and their senior ranks, I think they have little or lack technical knowledge of vehicles, including MRT trains in order to raise the issues.

If I may presume you mean Porche, Lambo, Ferrari, etc. I discovered that it is those with ‘modified cars’ with loud ‘revs engines’ that strive to gain people’s attentions on our roads. Besides, Traffic regulations can easily be implemented without going through a Parliamentary sitting, why the reluctance to act?

If it has not already been implemented, I would suggest that Traffic uses the same yardstick as the Chinese Traffic Police, as long as one is tested positive for alcohol regardless of the time it was consumed, the license should be suspended immediately from 6 months onwards.

Plainly put, no one should be driving with a single drop of alcohol in their system, period. No 2 strikes, caught once, license should immediately kiss goodbye, accident or no accident. Those who caused accidents, minimum 5 years to life. Irresponsible drivers should not be allowed to drive any vehicle.

It may be tough, but to protect innocent lives, I think its worth it. Sinkieland is too crowded a place with everything close to the roads, how many ‘flying’ M6 can Sinkies afford to have.

This time lucky because the shophouses were empty. Imagine what casualty figures Sinkies would be looking at had the Bars been in business and especially during CNY?

BTW, during this festive period, Traffic Police are all over the city where I am based checking drivers, Tg Pagar is a long stretch full of bars, why no sight and no sound of Traffic Police? Why no road blocks?

P/S: I am still trying to figure out how the M6 could have missed the bend and ended up in unit 37 (avoiding 2 support beams). Was he travelling away from Maxwell road or towards Maxwell Road? From the photo, the skid marks may not be the M6′s because the angle of attack to unit 37 is not correct at all unless he did a last minute abrupt right. No matter which direction the M6 was travelling, it should not have missed any of the 2 support beams at unit 37.

    Image: AsiaOne

If the M6 had been driving away from Maxwell Road, there could be another car involved coming from the opposite direction which the M6 is trying to avoid, so the M6 had to do an abrupt left (into unit 37) to avoid collision with the car in the opposite direction.

    What do you think?

What I find more deplorable are those people trying to profit from the fatal accident and the loss of young lives. The license plate number was sold out at betting centers. Real sick. Tells you about the kind of society we are.

It is indeed sad that their family members have lost their loved ones, but mind you these 5 choose the path that they took. At the speed at which the M6 was going, it would be a far stretch to even classify it as an accident. Suicide would be more apt a classification.

If they had lost their lives while saving lives, then yes, they should be honored and saluted, but these 5 did not. Again, they practically committed suicide.

So can you fault us for calling them reckless and stupid? I would agree with some readers here that they deserve what they got. Thank God the shop was empty or more lives would have been lost due to their reckless actions.

Reckless drivers not only endanger their own lives but the lives of others. Drivers caught exceeding the speed or intoxication limit beyond a grace margin should have their licence revoked and banned from driving for a period of time, or perhaps even jailed for endangering the safety of other road users. They will have to re-take the driving test again after serving suspension in order to qualify for a new license. It’s the TP’s job to keep the roads safe. In the past there were traffic police riders looking out to book speedsters and errant drivers. Where are they now?

  • @PAP is Finished

Yes, I would admit not many can do that, which is why at times like this, having quick-thinking passers-by would help greatly as they have no ‘vested interest’ in the victims and therefore are in a better position to assess the situation.

BTW, I think I have figured out how the M6 went into unit 37 barely missing the 2 support beams.

The M6 was traveling towards the direction of Maxwell Road and was doing a fast left turn (just before unit 37) and since the car was at high speed, the driver could not keep the M6 to the left side of the road and ventured over to the right side of the road (against traffic), he panicked and slammed on the brake and tried to steer it back to the left side of the road but the M6 skidded and went into a spin, eventually landing itself into unit 37 behind first (which may explain why the M6′s front was intact).

Although the left turn was not as acute and hard and experienced drivers could have easily recovered and taken the M6 through, the driver, in this case, was inexperienced and could not recover from the spin (which he himself caused by trying to get back on the correct side of the lane).

    1. Slamming on the brake was a fatal mistake that caused the skid and trying to get back to the left side of the road caused the spin. At that stage, the fate of the 5 was sealed.

    Photo: AsiaOne

According to a test driver (with 10 years experience) whom I consulted yesterday, the 5 could have survived if:

    1. The driver had not slammed on the brake but had allowed the M6 to travel against traffic and held on firmly to the steering and just allowed the M6 to speed through the turn.

    2. The driver would have recovered from the spin had he turned the steering right instead of left (to try to get back onto the correct side of the traffic), the worst case scenario would be for the M6 to go into a small left spin and stop right in the centre of the road.

P/S: I have been corrected by a reader that it was actually an M4 and not an M6. Be that as it may, both are hind-wheel drive, in the hand of an experienced driver, would have taken the turn without any issue or recovered from a tailspin – according to the test driver I consulted.

SINGAPORE – The woman who tried to save her boyfriend in the fiery Tanjong Pagar crash is out of intensive care and stable, said the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in an update on Tuesday (Feb 23).

Ms Raybe Oh Siew Huey, 26, is in a high dependency ward and is conscious, said SGH. The Straits Times understands that her family is with her. She has been fighting for her life since the accident on Saturday (Feb 13).

Her boyfriend, Mr Jonathan Long, was driving the white BMW which slammed into a Tanjong Pagar shophouse at around 5.40am.

The 29-year-old was killed along with four others in the car – Mr Eugene Yap, 29; Mr Elvin Tan Yong Hao, 28; Mr Wilson Teo Qi Xiang, 26; and Mr Gary Wong Hong Chieh, 29.

Ms Oh, a former Singapore Airlines air stewardess, had tried to save her boyfriend and friends from the car, which was engulfed in flames.

She suffered severe burns on about 80 per cent of her body as a result, but was conscious when she was taken to SGH by ambulance.

Mr Akira Chan, 21, a friend of the group, said Ms Oh had rushed to the burning wreck without hesitation.

“She tried to open the door and was injured in the process,” he said. “She was trying to save her fiance.”

Mr Long and Ms Oh had recently applied for a Housing Board flat together.

In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Mr Long’s 62-year-old father said family members have kept Ms Oh in their thoughts even as they struggle to cope with the death of a loved one.

“I treat her as my own daughter and I hope that she will be safe,” he said. “She is really a very good girl, and we will do our best to take care of her.”
