  • Entredesert:

Among the readers here, just how many of them would have the required Q&E?

An advertisement in the mainstream media would have a much better reach to potential candidates.

    Hi Guys
    Thanks for your kind feedback:
    1. This ad is already posted in many many BBS in China. My good friend TRE Techie advised I should also post in TR Emeritrus, because TR Emeritus is read by many thousands in China.

    2. Because the projects are in China, I am actually looking for someone in China, that’s why it is only in Chinese. But in case a young SG entrepreneur is interested and is conversant in 普通话, why not give him/her a chance to work in SG, and later let him/her start the SG operations?

    3. FYI, I already have native SG’ans responding to this ad.

Wow…surprised! First time learn about this, really.
Maybe Techie can elaborate on it.

TRE is well spidered by Baidu and there are PRCs that visit TRE frequently.

The website’s TOP 5 visitors are namely: SG, USA, AU, MY and CN which accounts for more than 70% of TRE’s monthly page views of millions.

  • Prof Wei Shin YU:

    Dear TRE Techie, wow!
It could increase TRE’s sustainability, if you could publish a breakdown of the millions of views now and then, to attract more advertisements.
Further, TRE may want to limit the right to post. One suggestion is to restrict to members — if anyone is so serious to want to post, then one must share the financial burden. Hopefully this will also stop many frivolous posts, to up grade TRE to a serious platform for discussing SG’s national issues (SG has enough problems of its own without worrying about what happens far away)- and reduce your unproductive workload?

With increased revenue, TRE can afford to pay you, currently not enough for many dogs’ dinner. Besides, you are still suffering from the sequel of a stroke, with several blocked brain vassals, diminishing right eye vision and arm strength, on top of your wife’s chronic disorders and frequent hospitalisation, and you still have to man the family store!

Finally, don’t forget your advanced age, and that you are “living on borrowed time”!
People in your part of China can easily live to 90 or more, like my forebears. But you are a FT, an imported semi-”wild type” species, not likely to have our longevity genes.

  • @Prof Yu

It’s really not so simple and straightforward like you suggested. TRE has been labeled as a poor men’s platform and if we were to go 100% members only, we would lose more than 50% of our daily traffic, which means our PVs would go down. It’s a see-saw effect, very difficult to find a good balance in-between.

Currently, TRE is able to maintain our PVs because it is spidered by Baidu on a daily basis and we do get traffic from there, although most would prefer to just read and not comment (eng is not the main language of PRCs). Some do comment on an ad hoc basis and I am aware of who they are on the platform.

During the last GE, we were also approached by the Congressional Library for permission to archive our website and we gave them blanket permission, which may explain why our US traffic is 2nd.

Anyway, even with the PVs, TRE is not sustainable at all currently and the Covid-19 did not help. We are losing advertisers and even the prices for ads have dropped, many of our long-time advertisers have either folded or can no longer afford to pay the rate that we used to command.

Our other issue is that volunteer editors come and go. TRE is currently on semi-hiatus because they (the editors) have simply gotten sick and tired of writing because “regardless of what we write, they cannot be bothered”. So it is own time own target for them now, got mood write, no mood don’t write. If you haven’t noticed, even most of our regular contributors have stopped writing completely, citing the same reason.

As it stands, the owner of TRE is contemplating disposing of it for good and is still in talks with interested parties. There was a party from Sinkieland who sounded promising but in the end, the party no sight no sound, just hot air.

Be that as it may, in the worst case scenario, we would just give TRE away for free to Tom, Dick and Harry because there are thousands of very good articles archived, written by some extremely good writers (a few have passed on), to us, that’s priceless and we would hate to see them get deleted when we shutdown TRE.

As you know, considering my current state of health, I would prefer to spend more quality time with my wife rather than man TRE. So unless circumstances change, I do not forsee TRE will survive beyond 2022.

It’s a long and complicated story, very hard to one word explain all.

P/S: I am not losing my eyesight, the sickness has affected my short-term memory with constant fainting spells though.

I think about time TRE modify its’ ‘mission statement’.
Instead of being a ‘Hong Lim park’ platform where Singaporeans discuss local issues, why not expand it to a more journalistic platform where readers from SG, USA, AU, MY and CN can identify/participate?
Of course still maintain as the voice of Singaporeans for Singaporeans.

Tech: Great idea, follow like what TOC did changing it to TOC(Asia) only to revert to TOC in the end? lol

You cannot compare TRE with TOC.
This website’s design/layout are super unique and excellent. Got book value if managed rightly. Forget about relying on readers’ monetary donations. Instead, focus on advertorial revenues by increasing the amount of readerships. How? I believe this platform has the potential for readerships, globally.

I would agree with you on that. TRE’s design took me months to improvise and customised from a simple magazine template I downloaded for free, with the assistance of an Italian programmer sponsored by an SG company.

The reason why TRE doesn’t use conventional magazine themes (even paid ones) is because be it paid or free, there are one of a kind, their format is almost identical, just shift the banner space here or there. Layout so boring, white and black.

If you visit TISG and then TOC, you would notice that without the website name, they look identical in design and layout, hard to maneuver and I can’t even find their comment page. lol

Lok back at TRE, all recent articles on a single page, click and read and comment all under one roof, how easy, dio bo?

Anway, since you so confident that TRE can make it big big, maybe come join us or even take over TRE completely?

If you are interested, we can discuss more. I am just an email away.

  • Read by thousands in China:

I am not privy to the real visitors statistic here. But if thousands of visits per day it should be able to generate a comfortable income from advertisers for most websites.
