Why China can allow protests but not Singapore?

Read the caption on this photo, taken from The Straits Times on 26 January 2021.

Doesn’t this photo remind you of the three young people who recently stood in front of the Ministry of Education (MOE) building in Singapore and were promptly arrested, detained in police lock-ups, and interrogated by the police for days?

I ask the Government these questions:

If China, ruled by communists, can allow peaceful protesters to protest outside the courthouse, why can’t our government let one person with a Smiley stand outside the States Court?

If China does not see the need to gazette areas outside their public buildings such as the courthouse as “prohibited areas” where public assembly is not permitted, why do we need to do this under our laws?

If China does not treat her citizens as national security threats, why does our government treat us like terrorists?

The courts, parliament house, and all public buildings are ideal places for demonstrations. People should be free to voice their objection or agreement to issues in a peaceful manner.

Holding up placards is not holding up weapons. It is a means to express opinions for the authorities to consider and discuss when behind close door meetings are futile or have failed.

The right to express peacefully should not be taken away by the signature of just one person – the Minister.

If China tolerates demonstrations, why can’t Singapore?

Local Police cannot even handle Little India riot few years back. Police cars got flipped & torched. Later after BOI, police commissioner was redeployed to “See Water” at PUB when he publicly acknowledged the force is short handed and needed extra 1k men . So No No to protest or riot ! You mean the force only deployed robotic cameras to view footages if you are not aware ? Also, the force deployed 1 Certis police and 2 old retired folks (part timer) to patrol the ground on weekends! I saw those old folks and Certis guy looking at their handphone more than they look at surrounding. Can they keep the streets safe? Moreover, the hourly rate was overpaid as found out in a parliamentary disclosure ! What a Joke

Our police cannot anyhow shoot like Myanmar soldiers .
Or anyhow shoot like USA police. Of course USA guns are rampant, police also jumpy on their toes once on patrol. Our police cant.
    But our special forces can.

I thought Tang Li pose questions on an article already.

The truth is Singapore is a dictatorship state. Some people call it Lee dynasty. Protest is not allow outside Hong Lim park. It could be to instill fear of raising issues as one has to get police permit to protest in Hong Lim Park. It prevents people from campaign its cause to the mass which will change the result of voting. Many issues like GST raising, electrical tariff that affect people cost of living has no protest in Hong Lim park. It is quite clear that people are scare to protest and to be arrested. The way to shut people up is using laws to disallow protest outside Hong Lim park. As we know, Singapore does not look democracy to Singaporeans and the west. The west has call Singapore authoritarian in many articles. Singaporeans ourselves know best, many citizens’ comments is not accepted and pass into law.

  • Ms Teo is not wrong.

As long as the protest does not involve anything or anyone from the top echolans, they are free to do so within legal confines.

I have seen protests (they blocked the main road) when the developer failed to issue the land title deed, when courts ruled unreasonably (they blocked the office and refused to let the sitting judge go home), over this, over that. lol

The local police would normally just be around to maintain order and not interfere. For those who may flout the rules, these people are mostly warned and they do listen to the police, not any how come one.

The protesters and police seems to have this unspoken understanding that you don’t stop me from protesting, I don’t make your job difficult, which may explain why these protests mostly end in a “good mood”.

So those who say the Chinese got no human rights maybe should rethink.

  • Harder Truths:

$G is about self-censorship. No one in $G trusts anyone else. If you get caught no one will help. $G is a place where there is no real society just a facsimile of working, eating sleeping and being scared of everything all the time. All the different races are suspicious of each other. Each race will try to backstab the other. Under such a situation what is the use of protests? It will get nowhere.

Chinese in China support each other and have their own society to push back against too much injustice. $G has nothing. The favoured leeder of opposition (FLOP) is kissing the a** of the regime.

After 55 years the $G citizen has almost ceased to exist. Why worry about something that does not exist?

Haha. So u claimed to be wolf.

    As some other commentators suggested
” Come , let face to face meet up at HLP , i call reporter ” ? No problem right ?

U remind me something i read online.

    Some excerpts…..

If they allow a single man/woman to protest, you will see protest on every issues in every street corner or shopping mall/retail walkways or public transport interchange where foot traffic is dense.

THE CONSEQUENCES IS THAT FOREIGN MEDIA AND PUBLIC MIND will get to read clearly what the real sentiment on the ground opposition against the inquities/injustices of dictatorial rule.

In Australia, anyone can protest – unmolested by the law – why no protests (other than by votes) on single cause issues?

PEOPLE DO NOT PERCEIVE SYSTEMATIC ABUSE OF INJUSTICES AND POWER.

Let’s assume you are right about no protest at TAM, even though you usually throw nonsense with lies or outdated info about China.

Which of the two cases is better for people?
    A) Singapore. Everywhere cannot protest except tiny tiny HLP.
    B) China. Everywhere can protest except TAM.

Answer probably, ok? Don’t throw a fit. TRE no responsible if you have a stroke or heart attack.
