Community spread by Papua New Guinea national

This news report describes in detail the movements of the Papua New Guinea national who was infected by the covid virus in Singapore.

He contracted the virus while in Singapore and is suspected to be linked to two previous confirmed cases.

He is asymptomatic, i.e. the virus was mild and did not develop any serious symptoms.

I wish to ask the following question – If the two previous infected cases was responsible for passing the virus to him, why did they not pass the virus to other people that they must have been in contact over the past days or weeks?

Surely 1 case cannot be described as a cluster?

In the absence of many cases, I draw the following tentative conclusions:

a) Some people, e.g. this PNG national, is more susceptible to get infected while other people are not.

b) The PNG national is asymptomatic. The chance of spreading the virus is low.

c) The PNG national happened to be tested. Many other people, who might also be infected with a low virus load, were not tested and therefore were not detected.

I am aware that my tentative conclusion could be wrong. I would like the media to ask these questions and to seek the answers.

If the media persist in giving detailed report of the episode and did not ask the critical questions, I will continue to be skeptical about the risk.

Many PNGeans have malaria in them (since it is endemic in their country). and they have over the years developed
herd immunity. Malaria drug was initially proposed in the early days to fight Covid 19, hence PNGeans are asymptomatic

This national was tested hence he was detected. many as you with low virus load are not tested.

That is the reason for the low community cases in Singapore.

    My 2 cents.

  • Idiot says...:

    A) We dont have the science yet ( that certain groups are prone to be infected etc)

B)Asymptomatic or not, the virus WILL spread via droplets

C)Certain groups of people are tested regularly because of the nature of their job.. coming into contact with many other people like airport staff, medical workers, shipping, marine industry.. the PNG worker is in the shipping industry.

  • I am worried:

Everyday we have import cases especially from India. Why not take tougher measures towards India nationals coming to Singapore. Also Blangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, UAE and most western countries.

The pandemic will not go away so soon as new strains emerge and “foreign workers in SG” will bring them into the country. Without vaccination you may need yearly booster to fight off new variants. The G would like to see as many vaccinated especially those who work in the frontline and G establishments. How to get the population to come forward? Simple. Just give a cut-off date after which all vaccination will come out of your own pocket.

Correction: “Without vaccination you may need yearly booster to fight off new variants” should read “Without vaccination you may not be allowed to travel for business and vacation. You may also need yearly booster to fight off new variants.”

    @ Vaccine

YOUR PROBLEM DEFINITION below compounds the vaccine hesitancy. With “free” vaccine, no taker among some recalcitrant (rightly so in my opinion). With monetary disincentive, they flee away faster and into silent oblivion.

Vaccine: Just give a cut-off date after which all vaccination will come out of your own pocket.

In any case, vaccine is NOT THE SOLUTION. If it is or ever was the case, you won’t need yearly booster already anticipated by Pfizer AT THIS STAGE when mutated variants are NOT the predominant pandemic street.

I have compelling apprehension – my hypothesis and noting that this hypothesis is also tested in NTU lab – is that vaccination creates a fertile field for overactive antibodies cultivation risking future blood clotting and early deaths needlessly.

To the extent that antibodies so cultivated by vaccine “seduce” (inside) the infected (after vaccination) host to mutate the invading virus into new variants unstoppable/resisting current vaccine, your imagined VACCINE cure-all/solution might turn out FERTILE TERRAIN for even worst mutant Covid-19 pandemic spread.

My guess and argument here is this – DON’T PLAY (do not vaccinate) with the DEVIL of covid-19 virus (unless it comes to you), the devil might latch on to your body and entrap you with successive loads of mutations waiting for the big kill.

THERE IS NO TURNING BACK OF THE CLOCK ONCE YOU VACCINATE!

    Remember this.

Taiwan is containing its risks – VERY LOW PROFILE – successfully till now at least.

    @ Vaccine

Remember I forewarned this – in ANY CRISIS – the first “OBVIOUS” solution (in this case of pandemic spread) is INEVITABLY a mistake (wrong) of decision-making.

FEAR INTENSITY DOMINATES/CLOUDS RATIONAL thinking FALLING into RUSHED JUDGMENT.

Your notion of vaccination solution is the SAME ROBOTIC THINKING – probably haven’t think thorough enough.

Apart from Taiwan, I haven’t seen South Korea or Japan rushing headlong into mass vaccination.

And there is NO CO-ORDINATED UNIFORMITY of vaccination in EU either evidencing the strong divided opinions – both in the political arena and peasantry – of the risks involved and expected/sought outcome (if vaccinated).

Australia has been going slow too – especially with the lack of new community cases/clusters in recent months and is also opening its air travel bubble with New Zealand.

I noted in mining camps in both North, Central and South America, mining entities reported tough handling even in remote locations even now as massive vaccination takes place.

IT IS A CONFUSED MAP which muddles epidemiology scientists as much as peasants.

    @ Maybe annual shot

Like I cautioned @vaccine, vaccination might turned up a deadly curse instead of a “cure” protection.

Maybe annual shot: Look like you will need to take annual Vaccine shot ….for life.
    The reality.

Just look at what happened in Chile – a rich mining jurisdiction.

Chile has one of the world’s best vaccination rates. Covid is surging there anyway.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/19/covid-chiles-coronavirus-cases-hit-record-levels-despite-vaccine-rollout.html

This adversity very well explains why I keep reading reports of pandemic infestations in remote mining camps in Alaska, Mexico, Central and South America.

oxygen: I noted in mining camps in both North, Central and South America, mining entities reported tough handling even in remote locations even now as massive vaccination takes place.

IT IS A CONFUSED MAP which muddles epidemiology scientists as much as peasants.

and in that CNBC Chilean news feature read

Carissa Etienne, director of PAHO :I cannot stress this enough — for most countries, vaccines are not going to stop this wave of the pandemic

If that aforementioned view is correct and evidence seen in remote mining camps infestation stays, it must send alarm bell to me that VACCINATION – be that one shot, booster added on later or annual shot or shots IS NOT THE SOLUTION at all.

Repeat vaccinations may more than cover the 2 *free* vaccinations given.
Time again to collect more money?

Besides the uncertainty of side effects, there is future expense to consider especially if those vaccinated require yearly booster jabs?

I was only surmising the all too familiar herd response of Singaporeans. The G knows too well the kiasu and kiasi instincts of the people. If they put a cut-off date on free vaccine, people will start to stand in line to avoid having to pay for it later; if the G makes it a requirement for entry into shopping malls and cross-border travel, most people will just comply – just like TT and Safe Entry. It’s even easier to “persuade” those working in G entities – it only takes an official memo from the top.

    @ Vaccine

    INTERESTING ANGLES there.

Vaccine: I was only surmising the all too familiar herd response of Singaporeans. The G knows too well the kiasu and kiasi instincts of the people. It’s even easier to “persuade” those working in G entities – it only takes an official memo from the top.

On banning entry into shopping malls and cross-border travels, I am less confident that it has optionality of success. Without the kids under 16 (not vaccinated) shopping malls will turn into ghostly malls AND DESERTED SUPERMARKETS. The over 70s mostly can’t afford cross-border air travel – air fare has to go up a lot for airlines to survive on much lower passenger loads. Same for kids under 16 for international holiday. The days of CHEAP AIR TRAVEL IS TRULY OVER.

Cross-border travel, in the post pandemic era (if there is one) will be one of necessity than leisure.

As for G entities of receiving an official memo from the top, this “persuasion” is real of possibility. In law terms, it is called UNDUE INFLUENCE. That I am sure is already happening. There is a political fire torch to come in election for this “encouragement persuasion” the political cows has to weigh carefully.

It is not a question of buying ice-cream or not BUT A ‘FORCED” LIFE-DEATH BET decision in exchange for doubtful vaccine protection (maybe mortal curse instead of finality of reality outcome).
