How did Singapore grow?

SPH CEO Ng Yat Chung

Call it a series of coincidences but my maternal granduncle passed away. While the timing was not something he planned, his death took place a day or two after Singapore Press Holding’s (SPH) CEO, Mr. Ng Yat Chung gave his now infamous “Umbrage” press conference when he was asked about editorial integrity in the newly restructured company.

I never had the chance to know my maternal granduncle. We met for all of five minutes when he showed up at my grandmother’s wake in 2006 and my mother pointed out that had her father lived, he would have looked like his younger brother, my granduncle. As such, I will leave the personal tribute to my granduncle’s granddaughter; which can be found at: [LINK]

While I may not have known granduncle on a personal level, I did know of the family legend. I also got to know him through his son and his granddaughter. My granduncle was by all accounts a highly intelligent and energetic man. Like his brother, my grandfather, he entered the civil service and climbed the ranks based on his intelligence. However, he probably didn’t get as a far as he could have, due to a rebellious streak. The man was exceedingly energetic and had a very curious mind that didn’t slow with age. His old age hobby was building violins and taking apart and fixing up computers.

This energy was passed onto my uncle, who in his own words, had the “meanest mouth in the Singapore Armed Forces.” My uncle had no fear of rank. He takes pride in telling us of his disagreements with superiors, who would always point out “I am your superior,” to which the classic reply was inevitably, “But you’re still wrong.” My cousin also has something of the old man’s flair. She’s written countless articles and has incurred the wrath of non-other than the “Fawning Follower” aka the Critical Spectator (angering someone who thinks keeping people in cages is a social service).

I like to think that it was civil servants like my granduncle who made Singapore great. He belonged to an era where there was a genuine belief in meritocracy. Intelligent people were allowed to make their views known and people at the ground level were respected. People were allowed to point out mistakes made by superiors. The key to success was about getting the job done rather than keeping up a myth.

I look back to the eulogy that the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew delivered at the funeral of Mr. S. Rajaratnam. The most shocking moment came when Mr. Lee talked about the “furious” debates that they used to have in cabinet. This is evidence that Mr. Lee’s real genius was in allowing intelligent people to get on with the job. He took care of the politics and allowed the likes of Goh Keng Swee to get on with the work.

It’s in this environment that my granduncle and grandfather would succeed in the civil service. Neither was known for being an easy character but they were recognised for their brains and the value that they could bring. It seems that there was a genuine respect for talent in the public service and talent was managed.

Lt-General (NS) Ng Yat Chung

I can’t tell when things changed. A generation later there was my uncle who would always need to be reminded that the other fellow was his superior. How did a public service which allowed people to have “furious” debates reach a stage where a “superior” would need to use “I am your superior,” in a disagreement. Surely, one would imagine that in a society that is as “educated” as ours, that the system would recognize the fact that the only way to be superior is to have demonstrably better ideas rather than having to state that you are superior.

We have reached a stage where the boss of a news organization “takes umbrage” at a question in a press conference. What does it say about our system when a basic question is treated like a personal insult and the response to the said insult only confirms negative perceptions that people have about the organization that you lead? One should be terrified that someone like Mr. Ng Yat Chung was put in charge of troops, whom he was expected to lead into life-or-death situations. The inability to listen to the guy on the ground in such situations is a disaster.

Tang Li

*Although I’ve been based mainly in Singapore for nearly two decades, I’ve had the privilege of being able meet people who have crossed borders and cultures. I’ve befriended ministers and ambassadors and worked on projects involving a former head of state. Yet, at the same time, I’ve had the privilege of befriending migrant labourers and former convicts. All of them have a story to tell. All of them add to the fabric of life. I hope to express the stories that inspire us to create life as it should be.

IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT, any attempt by those in power and authority to exert control and influence outcome MUST AND WILL FAIL.

    Why?

    VERY SIMPLE.

The contingencies keeps changing because of fast deteriorating environmental changes at an escalating rate – not only of the rate but also of its evolving nature and characteristic risks presented/evolving.

This is partly why that you will find organisations in crisis will see the departures of the brightest minds and ablest leadership long before they sink into quagmire and quicksands before crisis envelopes them.

WHAT IS LEFT BEHIND ARE USUALLY DEAD WOODS and mortally walking dead because no one else outside wants them. Such crisis riddled organisations laden with “useless” passengers living off the remains of organisation resources can be rescued?

I HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE once a critical threshold has disintegrated.

I think your great uncle hacked care about whether he still kept the job or not. Anyway it is an iron rice bowl.
That is why PAP raises the pay of civil servants to attract and retain talents, aka Yes men and women who eventually become Ministers like sycophant Lawrence Wong and whip cracker Josephine Teo.

Look at what happened to Toh Chin Chye.
What happened to S Rajaratnam in the end?
You believed what LKY said about “furious”?
I think he was furious and “retired” Rajaratnam early.
In the beginning, LKY was first amongst equals.
As he gained and consolidated power, he sidelined the old guards and brought in new blood and heir.
It is no different with other strongmen, unfortunately, Suharto and Park Chung Hee did not appoint a heir before they were ousted or assassinated.

  • Shanmugam talking cock:

Straits Times: Racism and xenophobic behaviour will become normalised if S’pore is not careful, warns Shanmugam

SHANMUGAM IS FULL OF SHIT. Disliking foreigners because they took jobs away from Singaporeans with help from the pro-alien PAP is NOT racism or xenophobia. These foreigners also depressed local wages and their “demand” caused a sharp rise in prices. Singaporeans got squeezed and screwed the pro-alien PAP.

Singaporeans are worse off since LHL became PM. Tens of thousands of Singaporeans PMETS lost their job resulting from the massive influx of “cheap” (No CPF) foreigners allowed by LHL. According the Woody Goh (disclosed during election campaign for GE2011) LHL and PAP kept quiet about it. They did this because they knew they were screwing Singaporeans.

LHL also allowed HDB prices to MORE THAN DOUBLE since he became PM while wagers were stagnant. This “DRAINED” the CPF account of Singaporeans big-time. The interest-earning cash in the CPF accounts of Singaporeans were “exchanged” for an over-priced, poor quality and basically depreciating (to ZERO because of the 99-year lease) HDB flat. To make matters worse, “insanity” prevailed in the HDB resale market with 30+ years old flat selling for the same price as new (with full-99-year) HDB flat of the same size and in the same area. This happened because HDB did not require the HDB-accredited valuers (needed for selling HDB flats) to value flats commensurate with the remaining lease. The then HDB CEO Ms. Cheong Koon Hean said “buyers of resale HDB flats should pay that is commensurate with the (remaining) lease”. But she did not require the valuation be done on the same. She did not “walk her talk”. She is also full of shit like Shanmugam and the rest of Cabinet. HDB became a “Ponzi Scheme” after LHL became PM.

  • PAP = Pay-And-Pay:

Straits Times: Singapore to open first inland ash-scattering garden in Choa Chu Kang on May 17

“Those who wish to scatter ashes at the garden will have to pay a $320 fee, which includes the pulverisation of cremated human remains into fine ashes, a canister to store the ashes and a two-hour session at the Garden of Peace.”

Money-faced PAP will always find a way to make money. After dying the Government-run crematoria has to be paid for cremation. Now to scatter ashes still have to pay.

Why doesn’t the cremation fee include pulverization of cremated remains, if requested, at no additional charge. The family of the person cremated should be allowed use their own container for scattering the ashes. There is no need to charge for “session” to scatter the ashes. Only need to book at time slot to do it. Fuck PAP.

Singapore has not natural resources, so obviously our prosperity depended on our people, investment in education. Even at a young age, our students outperform the world in PISA tests. Government policy has given us digital literacy. Sound management can also be seen in the top people we have in government. Middle-age people continue lifelong learning and skills upgrading. And finally, being open to the flow of talent and ideas has cemented Singapore’s position as one of the top economies. Bigger countries have land, population and resources. We don’t and yet we perform better than them. That is telling.

Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-’As reported the Messenger of God as saying:
“Four characteristics make anyone who possesses them a consummate hypocrite (munafiq); and a person marked by any of them is hypocritical until he abandons it:

    As he speaks he lies;
    Should he make a promise he fails it;
    When he enters into a covenant he is faithless;
And if he enters into a quarrel, he will sway away from truth.”

  • Spore Indians Vs India Indians:

Shanmugan mentioned that Singaporeans cannot differentiate between a Spore Indian and an India Indian. This shows that leaders in the Ivory Tower are not aware of what’s happening on ground level.

The difference between Singapore Indians and India Indians are -

    1) India Indians usually carry back packs with them. These back pack is where they keep their laptops, passports, money and other precious items with them. As they usually rent a place to stay, they do not trust others in the house.

    2) India Indians still wear ‘bra’ (Singlets) in Singapore. As the weather is very hot in Singapore, local people do not wear singlets in Singapore anymore.

    3) India Indians talk with an Indian accent and they shake their heads when they speak. Singapore Indians speak with a Singapore accent and they have stopped shaking their heads long time ago when they speak.

These are the differences if you observe carefully. These CECA Indians not only take away our jobs but they also bring their whole village people to Singapore.

The stupid LHL is not taking care of Singaporeans. Vote for the Opposition to rectify this farking problem.

Taking the action of a few individuals as endemic of our whole society is pure unadulterated arrogance and is an insult to all SG – born

SG is the most welcoming of all nations in terms of race. The accusations by the Regime to cover up their own failed policies of mass importation and displacement of locals.

No other nation allows this from foreigners. But we do. And the Regime does this because they have been given the mandate by these same citizens.

If this continues – and it will – SG citizens will be accused of racism and xenophobia for just living here and asking for our basic rights as citizens.

These institutions are NTU, NUS, Singtel, DBS, NTUC Income, Fullerton Pte Ltd OCBC, GE Life, UOB owned, controlled and/or regulated by the government.

Our housing has layers – 1 room to EA, EC, condo, terrace, semi d, detached, GCB.

More importantly, the continuous import of foreigners from those who rent to those who buy floors of private condo and GCB.

That is why PAP keeps harping that we need foreigners … we need foreigners to build our houses, aka pigeon hole for Singaporeans.

They fail to see their displacement policy is bound to fail one day, racism , xenophobia or not.

    @ KC Ng,

SIZE MATTERS of economies of scale, but you can change the rule of the game by what is called market segmentation and exploit the niche.

KC Ng: Bigger countries have land, population and resources. We don’t and yet we perform better than them. That is telling.

There is only one INTEL, so there is also only one AMD which prosper. There is Microsoft in cloud computing as there is also Amazon.com “re-writing the technology and competitive rules” in that sector.

BUT SIZE IS NOT A SURE WIN BET – IBM is one. Big countries with natural resources has its set of drawbacks and constraints. Big deposits are discovered in remote location without infrastructural access for exploitation. Big deposits of gold is found in Navunut – frozen terrain – very difficult to construct mine plants because the thaw in sub-soil lithology renders construction of plants difficult of engineering stability.

And commodities cycle is outside mining industry control – boom time, no ready discovery, big discover made in bad times, no margin attractive for risks undertaking.

AND THERE IS THE COMMODITY CYCLE VICIOUS CURSE impact on broader economy, sums up in the “conclusion” of this writing.

European Economic Review :We also show evidence that resource-abundant countries tended to be high-price economies and that, partly as a consequence, these countries tended to miss-out on export-led growth…

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0014292101001258

    And this is true -completely.

Australia, Canada and Saudi Arabia does not have export led manufacturing sectors.

  • No more bail out please:

I read somewhere where SPH shareholders demand that SPH be paid for hiving off the media business.
    I liken it to Hyflux.
Hyflux has a contract with Sg govt/PUB to supply water for XX years until the plant is returned to the government. When Hyflux could not fulfill the contract, PUB is kind to take over at a nominal sum of $1 from Hyflux the plant and operate. Otherwise, Hyflux has to pump in more money (which it could not raise, already in deep debt), and continue to bleed money running the plant. That is why Olivia Lum did not make much noise about it.
Taxpayers money is used to bail out Hyflux.
    Then comes SMRT.
    Now it is SPH.
I think the government should have left SPH alone, insist that SPH meet the requirements of the NPPA, even if SPH other businesses have to support the loss making media business, after all, all the assets, retained profits, monopolistic advantages are from the press/printing business in those good years until recently for SPH to diversify into properties, REITS, old age homes, student accommodation businesses.
It is ridiculous that now SPH shareholders are demanding a ransom or dowry from taxpayers.
The late LKY or GKS will tell SPH shareholders to fly kite just like they told land owners asking for compensation when the government took over a strip of their land for road expansion, etc.
The development in the area has enhanced the price of their properties hugely even if the strip of land was acquired foc.

Where got Ponzi? Ponzi was dead long time ago.

    Bubble bubble everywhere:
A Ponzi scheme is not one until the bubble burst.

A financial bubble is not a bubble until it burst.

In the meantime, it is happy time.

Remember Mah Boh Tan said something like this – those who own properties want prices to go up. Only those who do not own a property do not want it to go up.

  • One thing I know:

FTs especially naturalized Singaporeans are very supporting of PAP government.

After all it is PAP government that embraces them and convert them to be PR or citizens.

But many do not serve NS and are plotting so that their sons do not have to waste 2 years serving NS, thereafter 2-3 weeks every year to do ICT.

Singaporeans given a new lease of life are even more fervent in their loyalty. Ong YK said one party rule may be way for Singapore.

I am not sure how his late father 6 feet below reacts? Surely LKY would be smiling broadly until the Lee siblings squabble came into the open that makes him look like a fool conned by his children, wishes ignored and trampled upon.

    Furious furious very furious:
I think LKY also had furious debates with Tunku Abdul Rahman in the 1960s.
Judging LKY’s characters, I think he was still furious with Malaysia leadership not just those in the 1960s … read his memoirs with a pinch of salt (history will be rewritten, this time correctly once PAP lost power) and you will know.
He was still furious with the Communists.
PAP does a very good job in inducting dissents or cynics with positions and money (I mean very good pay) and convert them, eg Chan Heng Chee, Vivian Bala, and showing magnanimity recruiting rivals and their family members, eg Ong YK.
I do not know what LKY told LHL and what LHL would do.
    They are politicians.

Remove GRC and we will be able to get truly committed MPs and gahmen.
Minority interests can still be served in parliament.
In all districts,SIMPLY RESERVE 1 SEAT FOR ONE MP SEAT FROM MINORITY AND CHINESE CANDIDATES NOT ALLOWED.

So,there will still be enough number of MPs MPs from minority races?

India is a Giant country and they have many billionaires there. Why should we collect money to help them when their own billionaires are not doing anything ?

BANG ON, great irrefutable logical arguments presented below.

"Showtime" for Straits Times: Straits Times: SPH media restructuring: Keeping the faith, keeping the trust – Grace Ho – Senior Political Correspondent.

My question to PAPpypolitics is this -

If SPH all along has “editorial integrity” in play, they would have CAPTIVE READERSHIP in a domestic monopoly with readers Q-ing up desperately to read its spell-bounding informing contents, HOW COME THEY CAN’T CHARGE what the traffic will bear – whether online or print media – to achieve extraordinary rich harvest of advertising revenue and profits INSTEAD OF NOW SINKING NEAR DROWNING DEATH AND NEEDING TAXPAYER SUBSIDY TO LIVE AND SEE TOMORROW?

It freaks me out ENTIRELY of this WINDY HAPPY CONTRADICTION.

One bankster in LEE-jiapore made more money out of fee charging – often riskless and sometimes for no services rendered almost like legalized theft – its captive customer base more than the risky margin of 1.5% before costs to borrowing customers.

And this bankster is not even in a monopoly advantage but in oligopolistic competition. IN MONOPOLY, YOU CHARGE WHAT THE TRAFFIC WILL BEAR – just be alive tomorrow to collect endless tap flow of money and profits.

People paying 0.5 million dollar (for public housing BTO) to multi-million dollar for condo can’t afford $1 per day of newsprint read or free on internet??

    TWISTED IRONY OF SELF-GRANDSTANDING!!

Reported on Straits Times :Quote-”Bitcoin plunges after Elon Musk’s shock U-turn on Tesla car payments

Tesla Inc revealed in February it had bought US$1.5 billion of bitcoin and would soon accept it as payment for cars.PHOTO: REUTERS

SINGAPORE (REUTERS, BLOOMBERG) – Tesla has suspended the use of bitcoin to purchase its vehicles because of climate concerns, chief executive officer Elon Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday (May 12), reversing the company’s stance in the face of an outcry from some environmentalists and investors.

Bitcoin, the world’s biggest digital currency, dropped as much as 15 per cent after the tweet, sliding below US$50,000 (S$66,670) in Asian trading before paring some of the drop. It was down about 8 per cent to US$50,190 as of 10.53am in Tokyo. The were reports of outages at digital-token exchanges as people rushed to sell.

The knock-on effects spread to stocks worldwide that are linked to bitcoin. Coinbase Global, the operator of the largest US cryptocurrency exchange, fell 4.8 per cent in US post-market trading. Microstrategy, which has put billions of dollars of its assets into bitcoin, plunged 9.2 per cent after market, while Jack Dorsey’s Square also dropped.

In Asia, Monex Group, whose ownership of crypto exchange Coincheck had made it the second-best performing stock in Japan in 2021, dropped as much as 12 per cent. Nexon Co., which just last month became the first Japanese firm to make a significant bet with a US$100 million purchase of the cryptocurrency, slumped as much as 17 per cent, the most in a year, though a poor growth outlook given at its earnings was also weighing on sentiment.

Mr Musk said in his post that Tesla wouldn’t be selling any bitcoin and aimed to use it for transactions once mining shifted to a more sustainable energy. “We believe it has a promising future,” Mr Musk wrote, “but this cannot come at great cost to the environment.”

“We are also looking at other cryptocurrencies that use <1 per cent of bitcoin's energy/transaction," he added. He said Tesla would not be selling any of the bitcoin it holds.

His post took many in the cryptocurrency community by surprise, including Nic Carter, a partner at Castle Investment Management, and a leading voice among defenders of bitcoin’s energy use.

“Surely he would have done his diligence prior to accepting bitcoin?’ Mr Carter said. “Very odd and confusing to see this quick reversal.”

Tesla’s addition of bitcoin to its balance sheet was the most visible catalyst during this year’s rally in the digital currency. Bitcoin jumped 16 per cent on the day in February when Tesla revealed it had bought US$1.5 billion of bitcoin and would soon accept it as payment for cars.

The digital currency is created when high-powered computers compete against other machines to solve complex mathematical puzzles, .."Unquote.

Response :Wait till Singapore use digital bitcoin and Singapore may crashed !

HARA-KIRI ADVOCACY POLITICAL COW promises that in the restructured media, editorial integrity is a “given”.

I believe it when I see this happening.

Every day, how many hard-hitting opinion pieces from strident dissenting views is published for readers’ informed judgment?

Or its contents edited out of context and replaced with distortions?

Or, perhaps avoiding the aforementioned editing out of context, will it, instead, simply be the same old parrot farting political correct opinion pieces dressed up as “informed reality and neutrality” backed up by so-called “well-placed informed sources” or “panel of (existing or non-existent) experts whose identity are all hidden?

    @ The rule of ruling

IF WHAT YOU SAID IS CORRECT OF FACTS AND LAW below, it looks to me that the ordinary shareholders (outside the controlled/related parties) can’t via the legal challenge route, resist any oppression in the restructuring exercise pending by those in control either acting alone or in concert, if any, theoretically.

    They are dead ducks.

The rule of ruling: SPH is controlled by the institutions which hold management shares and who can out-vote the ordinary share holders.

I am mystified as to why there are still buying SPH shares now. If they are interested in other assets outside media (i.e. property sector exposure), I would much prefer Capitaland shares for its management depth, geographic spread and diversified property mix portfolio.

Capitaland has done a lot of hard work and risks taking already with footprint around the world.

BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION ONLY – not investment advice again.
