Misleading headlines used by western media

Recently, I came across two articles that gave the impression that the law in China is oppressive.

CBN News

Hong Kong — In an historic ruling, a 24-year-old man became the first person convicted in Hong Kong under China’s expansive and contentious national security law on Tuesday. Leon Tong Ying-kit, a former restaurant cook, volunteered as a medic during the 2019 pro-democracy protests that rocked the city. He was convicted of terrorism and secession and faces a possible sentence of life in prison.  [LINK]

VOA News

A court in Beijing Tuesday gave Chinese property tycoon Ren Zhiqiang, who once referred to China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, as a “clown,” an 18-year prison sentence and a fine of $620,000 after finding him guilty of corruption, bribery, embezzlement of public funds and abuse of power as an executive of a state-owned enterprise. [LINK]

TKL comment:
In both cases, the western media gave the impression that the government of China acts in an oppressive manner towards its critics.

On closer reading, they were convicted for criminal activities. In the HK case, the protester drove his motor cycle into several police officers.

In the second case, the tycoon was found guilty of corruption, bribery, embezzlement of public funds and abuse of power as an executive of a state-owned enterprise. [LINK]

While the two media reports did give further details, the headlines and summary did give the impression that they were convicted due to their opposition to the government.

This is the power of subtle brainwashing with slanted headlines. It is commonly adopted by the western media.

So Commie-CCP-flag waving TKL thinks CCP and non-western media do not do propaganda.
    All media does it.
In fact in commie regime those that do not toe the Party line are simply banned.
    You do know that, TKL?
    What ‘tonic’ is TKL taking?
He might like to read up on how NKorea became NKorea.
When you put power into a single person, you get Hitler or Kim.

  • Mr Tan is half fake:

Mr Tan claims the headlines are misleading but the content is true. Mr Tan, you spread fake news. The real truth is that both headlines and content are fake, in most cases. It’s also the truth that millions of sheep believe those fake news. Kee chiu for propaganda. It works.

  • I agree with Mr Tan on this. The fact is that these people have committed an offence and they deserve to be punished.

Driving a motor into the police and corruption is something which any society cannot condone, one can only blame oneself.

If they had not done any of the listed acts, who would want to charge them?

    @ TRE Techie

CORRUPTION is like someone giving inducements/benefits and another receiving it. In places like China, it is innocuous like drinking a cup of water but gets things done.

Why sudden the curiosity interest in China to single out particular person for persecution?

    That is RELEVANT.

TRE Techie: I agree with Mr Tan on this. The fact is that these people have committed an offence and they deserve to be punished.

In volatile demonstrations, there is unlawful wanton violence on and from both sides that includes brutality on the part of law enforcement. But for these excesses, the punishment is “Life imprisonment”. Law suddenly becomes an instrument of vengeance and oppression of selectivity?

Me thinks a few years jail term might be warranted. There are worst crime with more lenient punishment meted out before the mass demonstration of 2019 in HK.

Misleading writings is everywhere, maybe due to carelessness of due diligence or emotional bias.

In this article write up of yours, this particular thread attracted probing calls for your illumination.

    Here they are

Bruise me: Please name the several countries you mentioned. This will allow us to see if you really understand the subject that you are talking about.

    and

Bruise me: Can unvaccinated people be allowed to take the trains and buses, since they are sometimes crowded too? Be more specific when you say crowded places.

    https://www.tremeritus.net/2021/07/31/allow-vaccinated-people-to-resume-normal-activities/

You was relevantly making reference to Prof. T. Koh mention of such places BUT HIS DESCRIPT WAS MUCH MORE SPECIFIC. to restaurant etc etc.

By simply expanded that to your generalisation of “crowded places”, your article read appears to be “slippery slope” distortion of logical fallacies illusion.

Techie must be deleting mike posts?

Tech: Yes, I banned Mike, because like the other 2 lady mods, I got very sick of his constant word twisting and rubbish.

Anyway, he should be honored to be the 1st person banned on TRE in the website’s more than 10 years of existance. I am sure that with this talent, he will very soon find himself a much more interesting playground in REACH or HWZ, where its no-holds-barred.

As for all his infuriating and half-truth comments, they are all intact.

TKL: He was convicted of terrorism and secession and faces a possible sentence of life in prison.

If protests are acts of “terrorism and seccession”, then there must be huge tens of thousands of “terrorists” which must be sent to prisons for life time stay in Down Under 50 years ago for taking part in anti-war marches in all the major cities across Australia, near the end of the Vietnam war.

Fortunately, the judiciary Down Under won’t have a bar conversation on this “weaponisation of law” to add to mockery of “law and disorder” enforcement.

Therefore Techie you no longer publish mike’s post (banned) because you cannot agree with him right? Or because he ‘bashed’ you?

Now so boring, suddenly so dry in topic by this stupid Mr Tan.

By the way, why TRE kept publish Mr Tan’s rubbish, especially China propaganda? Is Mr Tan associated to TRE?

Tech: Banned means he cannot publish anything using his original nick “mike” and he was banned not because he did not agree with me, but because he has been taking other’s words out of context and then twisting and distorting its intended meaning, not forgetting cooking misleading facts. In short, he is not contributing anything meaningful to the discussion and is pissing the mods and others off.

As a matter of fact, there were several emails to me suggesting that he should be banned as he is more into distorting facts and arguing just for the sake of arguing. I was hesitant at first, but after I have engaged him on several instances, I agreed that he should be banned.

As for Mr Tan, he is not related to TRE in any way. Anyone can contribute to TRE if they have articles, be it leftist or rightist.

“If one day, China should change color and turn into a superpower, if it should play the tyrant in the world, subject others to its bullying, aggression and exploitation, the people of the world should identify it as social-imperialism, expose it, oppose it and work together with the Chinese people to overthrow China.” Deng Xiaoping 1974.

Lets be clear about the conflation of CCP/China/Chinese ppl. China as above is the State, and in China it is only the CCP. The danger of conflation was clear to Deng Xiaoping.

The nature of a superpower is really just that; power. Power is never given but extracted. It dosent matter whether it is the US or China, to believe that fake news is one sided sepatates the ppl who really understands what is true from the fcxking chauvinists. Chauvinists feed on some imagined superiority, whether it is race, color, history…

In Spore context, we need to be especially careful of race based narratives. We can only do so with a clear understanding of Spore strategic interests. Chief among many is the settlement of the South China Sea.

TKL has said he only has opinions, he dosent need to prove anything. Lets take him at his words, it is not analysis for truth he seeks, what he espouses repeatedly is a biased view of China.

    He is welcome to that.

    南京,南京!

How C19 Delta “infiltrated” Nanjing airport ?
Truth ? Or Fake news or cover up story ???

Write until like real like that as if hes there every minute.

Tech: Unlike SInkieland where the C-19 has made a pact with the PAPies to not anyhow bite, China takes the threat of C19 very seriously. Anyone screwing up the C19 means he/she will be history. His bad decision, for starters, was to merge the international and domestic operations, thus allowing the C19 from the international flight to contaminate domestic cleaners and so on and so forth.

The local authorities purportedly tried to cover up, but when the Delta start spreading to other cities, it was no longer possible to hush and news and massage the figures. In the end, a number of officials were taken to task and severely dealt with.

The Delta is so contagious, only idiots would try to massage the figures and cover it up. Sooner or later, it would blow up in the faces of those who tried.

  • PAP_is_my_father:

    Do not be concerned.

Following through a few of the posts, mikey mostly reacted to CCP related.

And as far as it is concerned, the Techie counter-reacted to those anti-CCP posts too. Just that Techie have the upper hand to ban. So offending mods, regardless how true the comments are, is not relevant. Mikey showed us that.

Few good posts in TRE anyway, only those like Sjorne, BK, Reboot worth your time. Those from President Tan KL, if not mikey and few alternate voices which counters it, it is just wasting bandwidth.

In any case, these few years TRE seems to be deviating from its course. My general feel is that TRE somehow has CCP influences. May be China is such a big country thus its presence and influences are unavoidable. But we all have eyes to see.

In fact, I don’t read President Tan’s rubbish, it is the comment parts that are interesting. Some people just cannot take disagreements.

Tech: Yes, he was extremely against whatever China, for someone who self-confessed that he has never stayed in China. So for the mods and particular me (since the 2 ladies not sure how to mod his posts), it was hard to mod his comments because practically everything he posted is simply distorted and not true. To allow his comments, TRE would be seen to condone fake news, especially when some readers have tried to set the facts straight, he was still stubborn and continued to twist and turn. Eventually, it was decided to just ban him and save all of us the trouble.

As for TRE’s course, we have never changed our stance, to be an open platform for constructive discourse. Articles praising the PAPies will have as much exposure as those of any oppos, but articles and comments with continued distorted facts are a no-go on TRE.

TRE has never been served with a POFMA, among other nasty things, and we intend to not break that record.

Question: An experienced news guy has given his analysis of western reports on this case.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayJWPtIDuxM
BBC and New York Times report on first Hong Kong National Security Law case: Who did worse?

Both headlines and content are misleading. Intentionally misleading!

The offender/felon should have been correctly charged under criminal law offence, NOT the National Security Law which obviously has a wider ambit and attracts a more severe punishment if convicted.

It is like a fisherman casting a net big enough to haul in a slow moving whale of a bigger food catch in an effort to net an ikan bilis. That attracts media attention and, sadly sensationalism reporting.

No news media in the world publishes boring straight informing news – it is NOT THEIR JOB to educate readers. Nor is its obligation to teach how readers should interpret their news feed.

There is no imagined INTENTIONAL conspiracy by all those identified western media to present misleading headlines and contents AS ALLEGED BY THE EXPERIENCED NEWS GUY on U-tube.

There was indeed a protest going on. The felon was indeed protestor participating. The felon did rode a bike dangerously against law enforcement – no denial of this one – for which he was rightly convicted of offence.

Should the reporters in the western media simply report this – a Hong Kong man rode his bike into police officer jailed for 9 years? In which case, the protestors in that demonstration would also scream this

    - MISLEADING HEADLINE, MISLEADING CONTENT AND GOD FORBID – INTENTIONALLY MISLEADING too.

That said, news reporting is always about sensationalism selling for advertising attention catch. The “experienced news guy” in the U-tube is also SELLING SENSATIONALISM – in his own awkward even ambitious attention grabbing way.

The felon is the first guy charged under Hong Kong Security Law – it got the “embarrassing” attention of “weaponised law” application in the western media it rightly deserves.
