Ministers should provide clear leadership and listen to the people

Ong Ye Kung

I had a Zoom meeting with a Singaporean friend, X, who has lived overseas for several years. He followed the politics in Singapore closely through the internet.

X made the following remarks:

1. The 4G leaders are not giving a clear message to the people on their handling of the pandemic.

2. The 4G leaders are not listening to the views of the general public.

I told X that I disagreed with his remarks.

Let me first address the issue of leadership.

I have been following the Facebook page of the health minister, Ong Ye Kung. He explained clearly, on a regular basis, on the decisions that are being taken by the task force.

I may disagree with some of the decisions, but I do not judge the ministers’ decisions to be wrong.

I suggested to X that he should follow the posts and videos that are put up by the task force and not make a wrong judgment (about the poor leadership) out of ignorance.

I now address the complaint that the ministers do not listen to the public.

I have seen comments made by the general public to the Facebook posts made by the minister.

This would be a useful channel for the general public to give their views.

I am quite sure that the minister or his aides would have paid attention to the views that are clearly and logically set out.

I observe that most of the views are incoherent, not convicing and not useful.

Several positive comments were made out of courtesy to the minister. They did not contain any useful contribution.

Several negative comments were made by people who obviously did not take the trouble to listen to what the minister had said.

Instead, the writers expressed their views which are often based on wrong premises and reasoning. These writers were arrogant in assuming that they are right and are better than the ministers.

It is difficult for most of the views to be considered, as they are not expressed clearly, logically or convincingly.

I find it ironic that the people who complained that the ministers are not listening to them are the ones who are not listening to the ministers.

First of all,are PAPple like OYK ministerial material?
If you put square pegs into “ROUND” holes, they just dont fit.

Does OYK deserves to be minister?
Are the ministers the best and BRIGHTEST sons and daughters of Sg or just loyalists who play the tune of HoLee Couple?

Look and see,it is clear as can be.

  • TKL is dreaming or sick:

When did PAP ever listen to Singaporeans? PAP HUBRIS precludes this and also admitting it made a mistake. Did LKY ever listen to Singaporeans or admit he made a mistake?

If PAP Ministers listened to Singaporeans and followed their advise then it would raise the issue of the million $ pay for ministers. Why pay them so much if they just follow the advice of the public? If they are paid so much then why did they not think of what the public suggested and they followed it?

It is clear PAP HUBRIS and SKY-HIGH PAY (the highest on the planet) preclude PAP Ministers from listening to and/or follow the advice of the public and from admitting failures and/or mistakes. It is that simple.

    Solution: REGIME CHANGE

  • Blame PAP:

Straits Times: China cracking down on private tuition: A lesson for Singapore?

“It’s an industry worth over a billion dollars here. It costs parents plenty, but what of the impact on equality in education and stress on children?”

    —————

Without a doubt, PAP’s “pick-the-winner” policy (The other side of this “dirty coin” is “pick the MAJORITY of each cohort that will NOT be to have a local tertiary education) is the UNDRLYING CAUSE of most stress in local education. It has also made private tuition the NORM in local pre-tertiary education and a billion $ industry.

Also, without a doubt, the PAP will NOT do anything to change the situation. Why?

    (1) Local graduates are a threat to PAP political dominance so they must be kept to a MINIMUM.

    (2) Private tuition “drains” the savings of most Singaporean families making them more dependent on PAP “generosity” and “handouts”. They will not “rock-the-boat”.

    (3) Places in local universities must be reserved for foreigners who are invited to study in Singapore with full financial assistance using taxpayers’ money. Foreign graduates are “safer” for PAP because they cannot be involved in local politics.

Singaporeans should let the above sink in. They should remember it when they cast their vote at the next GE.

The only way to change the situation is to vote for REGIME CHANGE and get rid of the always self-serving, pro-alien, and greedy PAP. PAP is a “spent force”. It should be buried with LKY so both of them can be made “GDP” (GOOD DEAD PERMANENTLY).

  • useless pap paper generals:

tan kin lian has made the wrong statement.

there is no need for pap ministers to listen anymore.

    rather,

the honest thing for pap ministers to do is to resign and let a better group of citizens, fellow citizens such as Ms Hazel Poa Mr Leong Mun Wai Dr Jamus Lim Ms He Ting Ru and such from PSP WP to be ministers for a better Singapore.

NOT a single pap 4G can hold a candle next to the PSP WP folks.

    NO,

not a single pap minister today can even bend down to untie the shoe laces of these esteemed PSP WP folks.

above is our honest opinion. and it shall come to pass.

  • TKL Be wise:

1ST They say No need musk if not sick
then they claim vaccination benefits out-weight the risk

then vaccinated infection will be mild and reduce the severity of symptoms/illness

    Quote
There are currently 36 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation, and seven in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). Four amongst these 43 cases are fully vaccinated. Of these, three require oxygen supplementation
while one requires ICU care as they have underlying medical conditions.
    unquote

Why lump these 4 vaccinated with the 43 cases, are these 4 in the ICU vaccinated?
    Liers trying to confuse readers, what people are interested are to know were these 4 in the ICU vaccinated}

    @ TKL,

NOT ALL 4Gs are the same. Of that I am certain.

TKL :I find it ironic that the people who complained that the ministers are not listening to them are the ones who are not listening to the ministers.

Your overseas mate is at least partially correct of Minister/s not listening.

I know of one reliable informed source who wrote a long policy paper – without any acrimony, blame or denunciation to one 4G came to a tone-deaf wall of silence. That 4G and/or his aide just pretended the writer did not exist – not even an acknowledgement of his written presentation was received or receiving attention.

This is in part represents the difficulty of policy challenges when is the legacy of long entrenched policy failures/contradictions and now hypocritical appearance of elegant beauty (when it is not).

On a second note, I find it ICONIC OF YOUR COMMENT ABOVE (in quote) noting you wrote this piece in TRE most recently.

Use logic, reasoning and statistical knowledge

    https://www.tremeritus.net/2021/08/04/use-logic-reasoning-and-statistical-knowledge/

I can’t capture your profundities of intellectual thought when I evaluate this windy happy contradiction here.

A is correlated to B (aka peasants not listening to 4G instead of 4G not listening to peasant), WAS IT A the CAUSATION? Or was it B the CAUSATION of this tone deaf mutual communication fallen off the cliff of anguish conversation? Or it is both way after failure of trusts and political indifference in some political apex.

By now, you should be (I HOPE AGREE WITH ME) THAT logic, reasoning and statistics DON’T WORK of your preferred decision-making mode.

IT IS A LOT MORE COMPLEX than that of your simplistic grandiose posturing here of your wisdom thoroughly confused – particularly of the pandemic vaccine issues still evolving (and mutating).

  • Chan Chun Sing talking cock:

Straits Times: Know your child’s strengths and weaknesses, Chan Chun Sing’s message to parents

“How do parents know when to push their child’s limits, and when to dial back the pressure? For Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, the answer can be found by understanding each child’s strengths and weaknesses.”

    ————-

As I said before, Chan Chun Sing is FULL OF SHIT. He is as usual playing-fast-and-loose with the FACTS.

    Here are the FACTS:

    (1) The stress in schools is primarily the result of PAP’s “pick-the-winner” education policy. This can be also called “FIX” THE MAJORITY” of each cohort so they do not qualify to have a tertiary education in Singapore). Local graduates are a threat to PAP political dominance so they should be kept at a minimum.

    (2) From economics we know people act based on “incentives (and “disincentives”). So it is hypocritical of Chan Chun Sing to “lay the blame (and responsibility)” on parents when the PAP is the one that determines these “incentives/disincentives.”

    (3) How the students turn out is largely determined by the education system run by PAP.

Chan Chun Sing should stop pontificating, get off his high horse and stop insulting parents, students and the public.

  • left behind:

The policy of Singapore is usually copy from other nations. Vaccination is copy from either US or UK. These nations as we know are failures in covid-19 crisis. Foreign labour policy is also copy from other nations. PAP does not care about Singaporean, PAP insist on the policy, regardless of people complaints. PAP pretend to listen people but actually their policy never change. Foreign labour policy is one good example. Job which is the rice bowl lost by Singaporean due to foreign labour policy, Singaporean complaint so loud. In the end, they ignore Singaporean, the voters. PAP try to convince people they are right with their data and speech. They twisted the truth and many Singaporeans knew about it.

How much does an insurance guy know except to con his client to take half truth insurance cover. Of course, there r usually good honest guys in all trade but in isurance n house agents n brokers they r a rare breed until they starts doing house cleaning themselves.

Remember a classic PAP insurance agent mp who tried to fool his constituents by promising to build a high wall to keep the foul smell from reaching them. Unfortunate for him those complianers have bigger backing than the little arrogant insurance agent upon which he was literally booted out by the chieftain. Ironcally his father has the foresight to called him kayu mam.
