China government is more democratic and citizen centric

My friend, who is a retired civil servant, made this observation – The socialist government in China is more democratic and citizen centric that the government in Singapore.

He was commenting on a news report that the China embassy sent medications to the China nationals living in the Jurong dormitory that is now reporting a high covid infection rate.

My friend’s remark represents a view that is quite prevalent in Singapore – that the China government is authoritarian, i.e. lack democracy, and does not allow their citizens to voice their grievances.

That view is wrong in both aspects.

Most people outside China does not realize that all citizens in China directly vote for their representatives in the local people congress, i.e. the first level of their governance structure. See this article.

The elected leaders vote for the higher level leaders at provincial and nationally using a hierarchical system.

This system is quite democratic.

It is actually a better system compared to the presidential system, adopted in America and other countries, where the voters vote for the president to run the country. Most voters are not well informed to make the right choice in selected their top leader.

The system adopted in China is also quite effective in understanding and addressing the unhappiness of the citizens.

There are channels for the citizens to express their grievances. For major grievance, they express their grievance through public demonstrations.

More importantly, the grievances are usually addressed satisfactorily at the local and higher levels.

The China government is able to identify and address the problems faced by the people more effectively than most other countries that follow liberal democracy.

It is also better than the system adopted in Singapore.

I urge Singaporeans, especially the younger ones, to understand about what is happening in China, and to change any negative attitude that they now hold.

An international survey carried out regularly showed that the China government has the highest level of trust from its citizens compared to the most developed countries.

China is now an open society. Its citizens know what is happening around the world. They have also traveled widely to many countries. Their votes are reliable, and are not influenced by government brainwashing or patriotism.

For a very long time, TKL had said, wrongly, that China citizens could not vote, and that only CCP members voted.

Now he finally knows that all China citizens can vote. Clap. Clap.

Yes, China citizens have more democracy and freedom than Sinkies.

China citizens can protest. Sinkies get arrested for holding a piece of white paper.

China sells practically freehold semi-Ds to citizens for $10,000. Sinkies pay $1 million for 99yr hdb.

China distributes free fridge for national day. Sinkies get a lousy pack of propaganda stuff.

  • Dr Tan Tai Wei:

They choose only among those presented to them to choose from. Even if it’s a “benevolent, enlightened dictatorship”, and the really right candidates are presented, what if equal or better ones were available outside “the party”? And where is the guarantee of that benevolence and enlightenment? Also, even with the best dictators and their intentions, mistakes cannot be absolutely avoided. Eg, a truly bebevolent, enlightened dictator ought to protect the people even from himself (he might go mad, or became senile). Etc, etc.

aiyoh. then make people more informed lar ??? if you keep a nation uninformed, of course uninformed lar ?? just like a baby, if you keep him inside a cave, when he grows up, he will become a caveman lar ???

why keep on comparing with american (as in USA ???) and some pseudo democracies, use northern europe for better examples lar ?? american like sinkie land is too chat-ba-lang while the other pseudo democracies only have word democracy just in name to make it sound respectable ???

CN has its own best way of managing their country as it is a big country with diverse groups of ethnicities / dialects and they have a long history with quite a number political and dynastic turning points evolving to a path which they are today ???

  • FICA absolutely needed:

Ha ha, makes my toes laugh! have democracy! it is like saying you can choose any color as long as it is black!

Authorities should check TKL’s global assets whether they have grown exponentially and whether FICA should be used. Or has he officially become a correspondent for Global Times, in which case does the provision of FICA still apply? Or should put into Woodbridge

PRC people maybe able to harmlessly KPKB, but that’s about it. even then, all social media is in the hands of CCP and monitored throughout. Ask the people in Tianamen Square or in HK.

“Most voters are not well informed to make the right choice in selected their top leader”.
How patronizing! PAP would be salivating at this statement! PRC nationals should just look across the border to Taiwan to see how democracy can work in a Chinese society. Chinese are not genetically disposed to work only under a kingdom, no matter what CCP propoganda might try to say

  • Lies, Lies, Lies:

It is true that Chinese citizens may have greater freedom than Singaporeans in Singapore. For example, they are free to open gambling dens (mahjong and paying card), and “spa and legs spa”. Homosexuals freely practise their gay lifestyle all over China. Yes, they could protest, display protest banners. However, invariably the protested were arrested, beaten or forced to admit to crime like “煽动颠覆国家之罪”.

However, the above article by TKL is mostly lie. I have many China friends which I keep in touch on WeChat. There are many things we had to avoid chatting and we know about it.

Democracy isn’t the issue. The Chinese government has demonstrated it cares for her citizens overseas. So do governments in the West. The British government even extracted a promise from us about no flogging before sending a bank robber back for trial. Do you think the Singapore government would do the same for our private citizens if they are in trouble overseas ? Somehow I doubt it. I will change my mind if someone has an example to demonstrate otherwise.

Just look at the title, you can tell it’s Tan Kin Lian coming out again to sell Chinese Communist propaganda and stories!

He still insists people to believe that citizens in China vote for their leaders, there are channels for citizens to voice grievances, there is no lack of democracy in China etc.

Tan Kin Lian ah, I lived in many parts of China for decades but till now I have not met an ordinary Chinese citizen who had voted in political election. All the Chinese officials I know, regardless junior or senior, told me ordinary Chinese citizens got no say in who can represent them. Actually the whole world also knows China don’t give its citizens voting right. Never mind what Wikipedia says lah, wikipedia don’t rule China. China Constitution also gives the citizens the right to freedom of speech, right to practice religions, so what? Got really give citizens the rights meh? You try write article in china scold the CCP lor!

Tech: I have also lived in China for more than a decade, and I can tell you that what your “Chinese officials” said is not entirely true. The common citizens do get to vote, simply not at the higher level, i.e. city and above. Village and county-wise, it is the commoners that voted them into office and then these officials will vote for the next level of leaders, like what Mr Tan said. However, city leaders and above are indeed, only appointed. Roughly, officials who are 科级, 县级 and 处级 can be voted, depending on which department. TOP Departmental leaders in 公检法 are usually appointed regardless of their paygrade, just like Sinkieland’s CP, AG and CJ.

    Where’s the freedom?

I am not comparing China with Singapore. Yes, agree with your observation. Singapore is just as autocratic, uses law to suppress opposing voices.

What I am trying to get at is China does not has freedom of speech as described by TKL. CCP has control over the social media companies which uses text/speech/image recognition to immediately delete anything sensitive to the CCP. Nevertheless, courageous people still record real scenes of flooding, disasters, protests and send them out of the Firewall.

Chinese citizens when caught sharing sensitive (but truthful) information online can have the following consequences:
    1) Information shared on social media deleted
    2) Visitation by local police or arrested
    3) Arrested for questioning, torture, re-education
    4) Made public admission of committing “framed” crime
    5) Made to disappear or imprisoned (with no recourse)

Fangbin, a citizen journalist was made to disappeared after he was force arrested at his home in Wuhan when he documented the actual scenes of Wuhan hospitals during the Covid-19 outbreak in Jan2020.

    Both countries are bad.
