Challenges facing the elder care industry

I received this feedback from a person who has been in the elder care industry for several decades.

He said that there is a serious shortage of workers for the industry. Some of the reasons are:

a) We employ foreign nurses and carers. After working in Singapore for ten or more years, and gaining valuable experience. they moved to other countries. This is wasteful. If we are prepared to give them permanent residency, many are likely to remain in Singapore.

b) In 2021, the government promised a bonus of $4,000 to health care workers to stop them from resigning during the pandemic. After receiving the bonus at the end of the year, many foreign workers resigned and left the Singapore with this big bonus. This has contributed to the shortage of carers and nurses this year.

c) The government insists that the carers have a recognized nursing qualification. This is not necessary for carers who do not administer medicines to the patients. If there is a lower educational requirement for carers, it will expand the pool of people who can do this work.

d) Locals are not prepared to do the work of carers or nursing due to the low pay, long working hours and work conditions. However, if they can be employed on a part time basis, with better hourly rates (say $20 or higher), more will be willing to come forward. It is difficult for employers to employ part time workers as they have to comply with the benefits under the employment act (which are more relevant to full time workers).

I agree with this industry veteran. I wonder if the ministers and civil servants in charge of government policies will pay attention to his feedback.

All the pappy voters, follow your PAP advice, go to old folks home in Johore. If you are smart, you migrate there before you are too old. Find a young one and have a second spring.

More need to be done for the elder care industry.
The elder care demand will go up as Singaporean aged.
Need to make it attractive to get more local to join the industry…now too dependent on FT.

  • illiterate pap voters:

Some of us are already in our 60s.

We agree we need nursing care sooner or later.

We have studied this issue to death.

We say, conclusively, Singapore is NOT a place to live as an incapacitated aged under pap. Until pap is voted out, the only easy option for cotton sheep is to live in Johor.

Let us be clear. The S$ is worth 3 times plus in ringgits. So earn S$ and spend in ringgits. Then, can have a quality of life better than the pap S$m per annum thieves.

Start slowly. Rent a 2 story house with 2 car garage. If happy after a year or two, buy the place. It is cheaper than buying a 2 room HDB in pap island.

If need nursing care, for 100% certainty it is affordable in Johor than in pap island.

Don’t be stupid. Everyone grows old one day, sooner or later.

Start early in Johor. You won’t regret it. You must be smart. Monetize your over paid, prepaid, HDB, by renting it out to the ceca ah nehs pap has brought into the pap island for the sole purpose of ensuring that you make S$ to live in Johor.

  • It is indeed very disheartening to see our oldies but goodies still slogging their arses off when they should be happily retired and enjoying their precious time with their loved ones.

In China, couples usually marry very early, normally before 30 and by the time their parents retire, they would be helping the couples to look after their grandchildren and in their spare time, dancing at squares. Most have retirement benefits and they do not have to worry about their next meal, and are literally debt-free.

It is very sad indeed for our oldies but goodies in Sinkieland, maybe it’s time to ponder where did we get it so wrong.

For many their retirement plan goes wrong.
    Reason ?
    Asset rich cash poor !!!
All the money gone to their HDB asset that will be zero at the end.
No money for a good and meaningful retirement.

    Take that.

As far as the PAP and the senior gov are concern, they have been doing very well and will see all means to continue their way.

Do not be fooled by these ‘oldies but goodies’. This is their karma for years of loyalty to the Dead Despot and his Regime. I was there at the beginning and saw how these fools wanted to become great by becoming the Regime’s de-facto citizen police who would threaten and put down any kind of opposition.

The shameless oldies are getting what they deserve. They do not deserve anyone’s pity. They made their bed now they can lie in it. It is the children that are innocent and should be saved from their future misery.

  • Time To Change Govt:

Prices of Everything in Singapore goes up. The worst is healthcare cost. As time pass, more and more citizens become the elderly. The hospitals charge exorbitant fees and they say its cheaper and better to die than be admitted to a Spore hospital. The cost of the same medicine in Singapore is more than twice the price in Johore. Why? PAP need to find money to pay their Ministers and Elites million dollars salaries.

We have been suffering for far too long under the PAP. Pinky knows how to mentioned about future disruptions and problems coming but does not have any ideas or solutions to tackle them. He is busy thinking of ways to bankrupt the Opposition.

Its time we need to change the Government for a new one or else our future generation will blame us for not taking the appropriate actions.

Vote the PAP out in the coming GE.

Challenges facing the elder care industry ????

Response : As one grow older, all those elderly has a high chance of contracting cataract of the eye.I don’t think all of you know the costof cataract operation of one eye .Cataract is the problem of the eye where the lens of the eye has problem due the lens deteriorate. So I happen to know a person whose both eyes contracted cataract .So this perspn went to see a private woman specialist eye clinic and got both her eyes to perform a cataract operation – meaning removed the human eye lens and insert with each eye with a plastic lens .So one eye with a far soghted plastic lens and another eye with a near sighted plastic len.So that means to say after operation,to read newspaper uses one eye only .Both the eye operation was successfully for this person. So this person can see clearly again with no “clouded” vision.Even far away can read the number plate of a car or a bus with no spectacle needed. However ,such plastic lens inserted into the eyes is unlike our born human lens which can contract or expand and focus as the human wants it to be .So there are bad points of a cataract operation ,beware of it. Talking about the cost per eye of a cataract operation which takes about half an hour or so for the cataract operation to be completed,it cost around $6000-$9000 per eye from a private eye clinic .Two eyes will be $12000-$18000 !!!See hiw much evil profits that women eye syrgeon make per day and her clinic is crowded ! So Lee Hsien Loong, you all can see how expensive is two simple cataract operation costing citizens !!! And you all can see these evil women b**** backside make tons of money from simple operation that is overly expensive and overcharged ! Government clinic most likely cost slightly cheaper but unlikely to be anything cheap and waiting time will most likely be much longer.People are getting old ,so a lot of such cataract operation may be needed in future but is our government working to reduce such cataract eye operation cost to say $500 per eye which is more than enough !!!! High tech equipment is just a one time cost borne by the government and the rest is just the eye machine operator skill which can be easily trained ! No need to overcharged !!!Pui !

  • PAP mandate strong:

Take care of elderly not easy. Majority Sg not interested.

My neighbour taking care of his father who needs a wheelchair reflect to me just a trip to and fro polyclinic, can go toilet as much as 10 times. Obviously prostate issues. Luckily he can still walk slowly.

He’s grateful that PAP subsidized his father’s wheelchair , walking stick. Maybe later he may apply for the motorised wheelchair. Only drawback is subsidy not allow for same item the second time. Plus motorised wheelchair spare parts pretty costly e.g. replace batteries or tires.
