Changes to GST

I will contribute my 2 cents worth of feedback sought by the Ministry of Finance on changes to our GST.

To begin, a very large majority of our citizens have the mistaken impression that our GST is going up by a mere 2 %, ie, from the current 7% to 9%, ie, 1% next year and another 1% in 2024.

In order to have any meaningful discussion on our GST amendments, this mistaken notion must be set right for everybody and the government has a duty and responsibility to widely publicise and educate Singaporeans that the increase will be 28.5% and not 2% in real percentage term.

Any discussions short of complete intellectual honesty, total transparency, full understanding and appreciation by all about the issue is a total waste of everybody’s time. (Please read this paragraph again).

With just the GST increase announcement ONLY, F&B prices, retailers’ prices and many many more across so many other sectors of our economy have alearly seen price adjustments upwards, some reasonable and many more unreasonable.

So many of our people, especially those middle lower, lower income earners, their families and retirees are alearly struggling like frogs in slow boiling water, struggling in silence. I seriously wonder how many million dollars earning pap ministars, their mayors and MPs are truly capable or even bother to empathise with the majority of our struggling heartlanders.

I consider a 2 stage GST increase as prolonging the agony and giving businesses 2 golden opportunities to fleece their customers.

This, to me, is clear poor political judgement or the work of amateurish politicians.
Nothing, not even one’s mentality, long held beliefs or policies should be craved in stone. Ideally, I would like to see a few things happen.

All blue Chas card holders to enjoy GST exempt medical treatments at all government hospitals, polyclinics, GPs and their medicine purchases too. Safeguards such as the requirement to produce their identity card in order to prevent abuses must be made a mandatory requirement.

Lower grade everyday groceries such as baby milk powder, rice, milk, canned food, diapers and many more items to be exempted from GST.

Off peak hours, sundays and public holidays public transport fares to be made free for our seniors. We are after all a fast aging population living in a very expensive country.

Strongly encourage the public to report profiteering and reward them upon the conviction of unscrupulous business operators. Relevant laws must be enhanced and enforcement efforts must be sustainably stepped up otherwise it would be nothing more than another wayang toothless tiger.

U-Save for HDB flats of 3 roomers and below to be made a permanent feature. For bigger flat dwellers of up to HDB executive flat to be given at a declining rate and all private property dwellers will not enjoy it.
Although the $100/ CDC vouchers is welcome and they offer some help, I consider it to be an insult to the recipients. In case pap ministars have forgotten, it is very expensive Singapore that we are living in and not some cheapododo country.

To put it bluntly, we have a totally financially able but very unwilling to do more for the citizens government. (Please read this paragraph again).

With GST increase from next and the following year, I hope to see this government gives all Singaporeans aged 18 and above $1,500/ cash over 12 instalments in each of the 2 years to help them adjust and breath better.
I invite my fellow netizens to contribute more.

Think.

Need to being the COL down for the bottom 50%.
The great divide is getting worse.
Should not think of increase the GST at this time when the lower 50% are already struggling to survive,

    Dear Simon,
Give me one good reason why U-Save should be given to all private property dwellers ?

Private property dwellers means they are rich. No?

The great divide is just nice only……….who cares about the bottom 50%…….

Just need slightly more than 50% to remain as rich liars for next few decades……

  • illiterate pap voters:

During GE2015, we were away in London.

But for GE2015, there were many Internet channels to watch. Every afternoon we never failed to tune in for the OPPO rallies. And every time WP had a rally, it was overflowed. we thought it was the right time for regime change. We flew back for the GE2015 voting.

ffff. kenna played out. Aljunied barely made it too.

Now we are in Johor. Looking at current price levels in pap island, and the impeding cost of living rises in 2023 and 2024 due to GST increases, we say cotton sheep probably will be hurt much more by the time GE2024 comes than it was during GE2015.

    Therefore.

More pain now and in 2023 and in 2024 ain’t a bad thing. because in order for New Government to form, an additional 12% of cotton sheep needs to turn against pap.

unless of course GE2024 turns out to be no different from GE2015.

then, for certainty, cotton sheep is beyond redemption.

    Does not bother me..

    - I do not buy big ticket items like houses, cars, jewellry, etc.
    - My air-ticket will cost more but I am not flying every week
    - Food and utilities are modest. With high costs, even the quality and quantity are declining. So, I prefer to cook.

If costs become unbearable, I will move out

  • When 8%GST takes effect:

When the 8%GST takes effect in 2023, the prices of food and essentials will shoot up astronomically. As of now, prices have already gone up by almost 1.5 times pre-Covid.

The poor and needy are becoming totally helpless and hopeless. Not enough help for them to lead life normally due to mental health issues, brought about by inflation coupled with GST real increase of 14.28%
    (1%÷7% x 100% = 14.28%)

Isn’t GST a mechanism to help these underprivileged groups?

  • Spec Ops:

It will be interesting to see the tax base shrink the next few years from the needle holocaust.

Its doubtful just because of their Asian ethno-genetic makeup differs from the Caucasian (ang moh) people in the West who are now in large numbers unable to work and causing huge backlogs at airports from short-staffing and ambulances blaring every day will be spared the side effects of the coming death shot.

The images on instagram of people showing off their plaster are long gone as these people are now filled with a primal fear of not waking up the next day. Because countless otherwise seemingly healthy people are going to bed and not waking up.

The increase in GST will backfire on them. 4G cellphone Minister ‘Child Molester Smile’ Lawrence Ong’s ‘we need to do our part’ (‘we’ doesn’t include natural aristocracy) will not wash over when people see they don’t have enough money left for feeding their kids. They will have to make hard choices on spending.

The needlecrafted will be the biggest losers now for taking the death shot for the privilege of eating out for greasy unhealthy hawker food / junk food that’s now going up further in price. They will have a few months/years left to enjoy before they one day fail to wake up.

Simon, to be fair, it’s really tough for a family with 2 or more children to live in a 3 room HDB. They are already doing national service by raising up the next generation. If the grandparents are staying together with the family, the strain will be even greater.

This cost of living issue needs to be looked at by an independent body. Our govt had proven that it’s out-of-touch with the people’s living conditions for a long time. When you earn millions of dollar a year, what’s an extra few hundred dollars of household expenditure a month?

    Good for you.
But for many sgs, they cant shift out at fancy even if they want to.

G$T increases to *EQUALI$E* after raiding sgs’ reserves of $100 Billion n granting many sgs just $600 while GIFTING many non-sgs much more in tens of thousands is simply INEQUITABLE!

    That will never happen.
Wait Till Sky Falls or Tan Ku Ku.
They want to grab more from us peasnts not give out more.
As always give with one hand then shortly after grab back 3x with other hand…
So if they give out $1.5k , imagine what theyll expect back from us.
    Can we afford it?
    Dont give better..

  • Harder Truths:

$inkies are like the orange that is being stepped on by the Regime elephant. After all the juice is squashed out, the elephant leaves. The orange does not survive.

$inkies will not survive the financial and pandemic cataclysms coming from the killing of the $inkie economy by becoming a vassal state of the USA. There is nothing $inkieland has that cannot be replaced by others in the region. Malacca and Penang are being built up as international maritime ports by China, to ship good directly to China by train and to replicate other services at much cheaper prices. The trade going through the Malacca Straits will dwindle considerably and $inkieland will have lost its main revenue as a port.

The main financial institutions do not have to stay in $inkieland anymore – everything is virtual anyway. All these companies will disappear.

So what will $inkeland peddle to the world after that? Nothing. China and Russia will bypass $inkeland and the USA will probably use it as a military port, which will make the island a big Desker Road and drug distribution centre.

Good luck to $inkies – I am glad I will not be around for the ‘fun’ they made for themselves.

Ahgong and the Dynastic Incorporated he compelled into existence had always been antithetical to the Constitutional Republic of vanguard PAP. The way they’ve bastardized the people’s CPF for their Sovereign Wealth Fund capital investments worldwide without explicit transparency and therefore no accountability or adequate safeguards to the citizens public savings augurs badly for the HDB costs and Medisave savings any ongoing fiscal policies they desire to implement…
