NDP parachuting saga

On National Day (on live TV) we all saw how one Red Lion landed outside the designated zone and injured himself. The cameraman immediately and instinctively shifted the focus elsewhere. This is on national TV live coverage.

My point is I wonder if this is the Singapore way – not dealing with any issue head-on, especially if it is detrimental or negative to our image (or the authorities). We try to sweep it under the carpet or sidestep the issue entirely. In other words, we lack the courage of conviction.

I’m certain not everyone will agree with me but that said, I also believe many do see it this way. Let’s learn not to skirt anything and be more transparent.

The camera may have shifted away but hey, we got plenty of footage posted by those at the parade on Youtube and Facebook! So no need to worry about the silly camera, others let us all watch exactly how it unfolded.

Just glad that the guy is ok.

What I couldn’t tahan was the CNA report later that evening about how the poor chap “skidded” when he hard landed.

MSM trying to sugar coat what was plainly obvious to live audience and those of us watching the live telecast at home.

Armchair critics with nothing better to do. Zero loyalty and pride. Why not migrate to Sri Lanka or be the baggage carrier of Rajapaksa?

It is the TV Director who selects which camera to feed the live coverage. Accidents can happen. Someone is injured but the show must go on.

A parachute event is high risk even though all these are very experienced officers who have done more than a thousand jumps. They would have many tumbles before, some may have broken their ankles and retired, etc.

This is a hard landing but not a crash. His legs were supposed to cushion the landing, flex a bit, run forward to reduce the speed. The safety limits are rather narrow…too fast and you tumble. The wind speed is a factor, his rate of descend is a factor.

I am sure they will be analysing his descend. Not sure if he carried any sensors…perhaps they should and also have alarms. Use AI.

When planes land, they are guided by four lights as the end of the runways. Too high or too low, the lights will be seen as all red or all white. The right angle of approach will tell the pilot to wheel down or Go around.

I hope SAF look at sensors that can guide a parachutist on landing speed, distance to ground etc. Sensors are faster than what the eye can sense.

Our thoughts should be for the injured parachutist.

But on the subject of our media Professionalism, why suddenly use this incident on ND? Just look at the coverage of our parliament sessions – why almost always zoom-in shots but never use a wide angle lens to show the whole room? Becos very malu, cannot show the public how empty the sessions are?

My well wishes to our fellow sg,the fallen Red Lion.
Question is there were a few official rehearsals,am i right?
If so,how come his SUPERIOR,A $CHOLAR,probably,DIDNT HAVE THE FORESIGHT TO INCLUDE A VARYING WEATHER/WIND condition?
The Red Lion did his best to attempt a last minute *THINK ON YOUR FEET* contigency plan, all by himself n he is just a Third WO by rank.
If our scholar-generals cannot lay out PLANS FOR DIFFERENT SCENARIOS IN SUCH SIMPLE SITUATION,HOW TO FIGHT THE ENEMIES in a war?

It always take an accident to trigger a deep review. Ng Eng Hen has just announced that. The next incident may not be so lucky. In a previous NDP, a parachutist landed on a light pole…luckly he did not smash in that structure.

High time to review all aspects of this high risk activity. Or even modify the event i.e. float past, land if the conditions are appropriate or land safely further away…Safety dictates the final landing zone.

I believe we need sensors and AI that can calculate the risks and ground command to communicate with the parachutist to abort and land somewhere, etc.

It will be a big tragedy to have a death. Never say Never.

As an engineer, I know gravity is our best friend but can also be our worst enemy. The landing is not slow, feather-like, not always. It can be a hard landing. Just a matter of the last few seconds.

I presume the parachutists are well padded with leg, knee and ankle pads, etc. Still, slamming on to hard concrete means the body absorbs the full force inflicted by the forces of gravity.

The SAF has to do a scientific study on the forces encountered at the point of contact, the various parameters and most important..What If.

Vocab twisting, misuse of proper words or appropriate words should deserve hanging like drug mules – killing the brain is worst than taking off a life. After all no one is forced to take drugs with a gun on his head.

Whereas editors and directors are servants of fear – they must be fearing castration.

I am fine with the camera panning away so that the atmosphere of a National Day celebration was not spoilt.

In any case, we could see there were medics rushing to his aid.

What I find puzzling is that now MINDEF talks about new route or whatever just because a parachutist injured himself. And this parachute segment has been going on for all these years without mishap.

The bigger point is that of a parachutist who messed up his landing. Whether it was luck or skill, we should be addressing this.

Does he need more training? We don’t need to change the flight path of the parachutists just because of a little mishap.

  • Hope the sg lion is well:

Dunno how many demerit points recorded in his record…
    Theyll say his mistake..
When i was working at a semi gov entity previously…every mistake we make in our work , we suffer demerit points…that goes into our personal record…plus the monthly $150 “misc” allowance would be deducted from that months salary.
Its like a punishment…lateness will also suffer the same fate..our salary in those days was so small and that extra allowance made a big diff.
    But thats how it was…
    Wonder how it is now.

  • SINGAROAR:

Failing to keep the cameras on the parachutist only shows that the focus by the PAP is not on the journey but to the perfect outcome. On a National level it says that if you fall you are on your own. This parachutist should have been celebrated on National level as he must have worked and trained hard. It does not matter that he fell but did we pick him up as a Nation or did we fail him? What the PAP wants are wins no failures. The importation of foreign sports men and women to win medals wearing Singapore colours is a mockery of Nation building. I did not cheer for Feng Tianwei. She came to Singapore to represent the State and get paid for the medals she wins. She is in employment with the State. Jeffery Heng took a hard landing on National Day. He is my hero.
