Disciplining students

I refer to the report, “Disciplining students becoming a trickier issue with lack of parental support, teachers say” (TODAY, Aug 31).

The underlying issue of the report is worthy of deeper contemplation and analysis.

As we know, our education system, model and ways of teaching have gone through continuous transformation and innovation throughout the decades. In short, in today’s context, our education system is vigorously encouraging two-way open communication and interaction with respect and dignity accorded between the teachers and students.

Students who are born in this knowledge-based, skill-based and technology era, they are intuitively inclined or more likely equipped with high curiosity and strong thirst for knowledge. Thus, their inquiring minds and innate inquisitiveness in study are understandable and needed. However, the crux is, the way that students “challenge” or put forward queries to their teachers (in or after school) have to be in rational and respectful manner.

Nevertheless, some secondary schools still encountered cases of open defiance or misbehaviours of students. Of which, misbehaved and disrespectful students displayed rude attitudes or violent behaviour towards their teachers.

In these unpleasant circumstances, unbridled students’ coarse and unruly behaviours towards their teachers are perceived rebellion and unacceptable in the social norm.

Anyway, parents of those students being disciplined for misbehaviour in school should remain calm, and adopting an open-minded and rational mindset when they were informed by the school about their child’s wrongdoing or misbehaviour.

It is key and sensible for parents to find out the cause(s) and effect(s) of the incident of your child’s misbehaviour in school, rather than emotionally and straightaway jump into own conclusion for ignoring your child’s mistake(s).

Parents are earnestly advised that most schools in our refined education system work on, and trying hard to help create changes in behavior as opposed to imposing penalties. Thus, our parents should have confidence and trust upon our teachers, as moulding students’ character and morals are the sacred duty of the educators/teachers.

It is not the parents that is the problem. It is the princiapls. They are the ones who do not support the good teachers who are doing the disciplining. Some principals are trigger fast and attack teachers for disciplining students or send them for disciplinary action. The teacher kana discipline nowadays not the students. So teachers resign lor. Nowadays, no teacher want to discipline because it`s not part of their performance review, right? So, they all close one eye now.

Not only students, some of the old ladies at Ghim Moh today. YOu should hear the way they talk. Their tongues are loaded with poison and they let their tongues run wild. No self discipline. Just shoot their mouths off. Common habit among females. They get off from spiteful gossip.

When I read that two young women were beaten up by some men at a club called Marquee at Marina Bay Sands, my first thought was that the woemn probably done something to piss the men off. Lots of times at clubs and free standing areas at concerts, these females lose their self control and push and shove people around them.

Maybe that’s why Jack The Ripper targetted females. They must have said something to piss him off royally. So he cut them like a fish.

Schools also have a bottom line – grades. Most are preoccupied with ranking.

Schools will have rules that all have to follow. Children must know themselves if they break school rules and the punishment that follows. There is no place for parents if the school follows and implement the rules themselves without favourites.I think there is too much MOE in schools with too many guidelines for the teachers to follow. As ultimately, a teacher will want to abide by MOE rules there may be a lapse in doing what is the best for the students. An authoritarian govt. instils fear and this results in a robotic reaction and it removes creativity.

Today’s kids are much more street-smart than most kids of my time.
As kids and teenagers,we were less street-smart but more respectful and considerate.
Parents ,nowadays, spoil their kids rotten, probably out of a sense of *guilt* of not spending enough time with their kids.
I remember our parents accord genuine trust and respect for our teachers; not nowadays!

This maybe due to our public policies that, many times, contradict each other.
Meritocracy has been seriously misconstrued both at govt levels and on the ground like in our schools and workplaces.
We value street-smartness more than solid hard-work and integrity, who can deny?

Going forward,we can expect worsening conditions.
We,as govt n people, allow MONEY TO TALK TOO MUCH,dont we?

Honesty n integrity are not values sgs hold in the highest regards anymore!
The G,after A FT-staff at elite A*Star was caught falsifying degrees, even came out in defence, saying Skills are more important, bla, bla, bla.
Then, why only put TOP SCHOLARS WITHOUT THE REQUISITE SKILL SETS IN TOP POSITIONS?

    Lets not be hypocrites.

I have come across recalcitrant pupils from broken homes.

The moment you say something harsh to them, these students quickly ring up their separated parents to the school to confront the school head.

The pupils inténtion is to bring their divorced parents together by using the school as their proxies.

There you have it…………such pupils disrupt the everyday difficult job by a ‘Cher!’

Hi Cher, I knew what you talking because I volunteered for CARE before. And one of the children told me cher is short for teacher during our trip to science centre.

Difficult children from dysfunctional family. Girls and boys…but not beyond reform.

Yes, if you walk the ground frequently, you will realize there are many irresponsible parents amidst us, very very irresponsible.

Especially man, who screwed around without taking responsibility and make taxpayer like you and me to clean up their smelly sh1ts.

Is discipline a major issue in Singapore schools? Probably not. We have only 1 video of a student threatening a teacher.

What MOE must worry about is the ignorance of students they produce.

How can people who have gone through the education system be so ignorant as to say this:

“Other than US wars in Middle East and some part of Europe, since WW1, did any country in Asia suffer from US’s supremacy?”

    They have not heard about
    - WW2 US wars in Asia
    - WW2 atomic bombs on Japan
    - Korea war
    - Vietnam war
    - US bombs on Cambodia
    - US bombs on Laos
    - US actions in Philippines

How can MOE turn out such ignorant students!

In the first place, why do you have to say something harsh? If you don`t know how to say, go and learn. No need to say harsh thing. You`re a teacher. You can tell them off, sure, but harsh words are the last resort of incompetence. You are right about teachers being proxies. That`s why many teachers don`t want to teach normal technical, normal academic classes because it`s not teaching going on there. Many teachers resign because they were gullible when they entered MOE.

    @Sad state of affairs
Well said. In Singapore, it is better not to have children as both parents have to work and children are left with the maids to nurture them. Even on playgrounds, children are desperately seeking the attention of parents who are at most times busy on the phones.Singaporean children are truly pathetic. A wealthy state but not the environment for raising children who will be further stressed with school curriculum to excel. They will then have to be in the never ending tuition routine.

Quite true. Bunch of young men talking at Clementi Central pasar malam. Anything don’t fit with their view is weird. Why do they say that? Because they are brainwashed by schools to adhere to certain “norms”.

Just do 10 year series plus model answers and churn out diring exams.

sad. In life not everything got answers in a book all ready made.

The problem is that women don’t want to take care of their own children. These mothers want to be like men. So they offshore their responsibility of caring to childcare centres and grandmas. Come back home, just scold the kids to vent off.

    Children most *ape* their parents.
If you do come across a rare nice kid,被sure/her parents are nice people.
I came across,so many times, young parents and those in barely 40 and younger, who are inconsiderate and rude.
If a toddler see the parent behave rudely towards older people, you can bet the kid would take after the parent and even behave self-centredly n rudely towars that parent, not to mention an elderly stranger.

    This is KARMA in action.
    What goes around,comes around.

Many young parents love VIOLENT COMPUTER GAMES and you will observe their kids will take after them.
Such kind of games propagate violence, even if your fave character is THE HERO?!

And,i dare say, from a life-long observations,VIOLENCE LEAD TO OTHER BAD CONDUCT,from selfishness to greed and so on.
In our schools, what is missing is not academic obssession and *excellence( as society deems?); what is lacking is moral and charity.
As for charity, even BIG GUYS FROM BIG OEGANISATIONS MUST WANT TO HAVE A HUGE VLOWN-UP *CHEQUE* TO SHOW ON TV AND NEWSPAPERS?

KINDNESS,HONESTY,RESPECT AND CHARITY SEEM TO BE THE *LOUSY*(LOSER) VALUES these days.
WE MUST ALWAYS *WIN* OTHERS AT ALL COST.
WE SEND OUR KIDS TO *MMA*( FIGHT CLUBS) TO LEARN HOW TO BASH OTHERS unlike the past when *SIFUs* first teach morals before teaching kids how to fight???Then, they were more honourably called Martial Arts SCHOOLS; these days, they name it *FIGHT CLUB*,FIGHT THIS AND FIGHT THAT?
SO ,we now EMPHASISE *FIGHT* AS KEY INSTEAD OF SCHOOL where MARTIAL ARTS EXPONENTS MADE SURE their disciples first learn values.

Many will disagree with what i said and call me a DINOSAUR.
BUT,all i can say is FIGHTING N WINNING AT *ALL COSTS* WILL END UP IN MISERY

CHEERS N HAPPY PARENTING N EDUCATING.
