Last respect to Queen Elizabeth II

While I pay my last respect to Queen Elizabeth II in London, I don’t celebrate our Singapore’s Colonial past.
My respect to Queen Elizabeth II is for her ability to bring an end to British Colonialism Gracefully and Peacefully as her Empire declined.

There are no short of bloody wars of independence against Colonial rule all over the world throughout history.
Mistake it not, Colonialism is about bloody exploitation of resources and humans for the White Supremacy of Western Powers and it is a dark era period of Colonialism and Imperialism.

Black Slavery and trade in human slaves started off from Colonialism. Steal, rob or land grab by cunning politicking or blatant force have only one common aim to plunder the foreign lands to enrich the colonist masters.

Mistake it not that when the colonists spent money to build up a port like Singapore or Malacca or Hong Kong or Cape, these were for facilitating further exploitation of resources of colonialized land to be traded or exported back to their colonial masters!

As immigrants of our forefathers partly driven by poverty and colonial trade of coolies, we must also be mindful of the sensitivity of land grab effected by the British against the Malay Kingdoms.

The so call prosperity brought by the colonists were very small and didn’t really trickle down to the massive coolies and residents who were basically exploited slave labour. Most of these little fortune were monopolized by small number of families in this region but even so, their riches were really insignificant compared to the exploited profits earned by East Indies Company and the Crown of Great Britain!

Worse part of Singapore colonial history is the set up of opium dens which further enslaved local coolies with addiction to opium!

I was born after Singapore Independence and wasn’t a subject of the Great Britain at all. But I am very mindful of the colonial past of exploitation of this land and people by the British. I also empathize with older generation who had grown with the anti colonial struggles right after WWII.

This is the reason why in contrary to PM Lee, I don’t think every Singaporean will mourn for the death of Queen Elizabeth II. We should not fly at half mast because we have to respect the anti colonial activists who has contributed greatly to our independence as well.

But at personal level, I respect the Queen for ending British colonial rule all over the world amicably and gracefully, minimizing the unnecessary loss of lives in wars. She has also ended the Dark Era of Colonial exploitations in every sense.

This is the reason why I would personally pay my last respect to Queen Elizabeth II when I can but I don’t expect others, especially those anti colonial fighters, to agree with me.

    Last time they colonized you.

After that they open foreign companies in your country and became your boss.

Whichever way, they are still on top.

The dominated still have to be servile toadies and worship that great white shaft.

    GMS, you are wrong.

Britain’s remaining colonies in Africa, except for Southern Rhodesia, were all granted independence by 1968. British withdrawal from the southern and eastern parts of Africa was not a peaceful process. Kenyan independence was preceded by the eight-year Mau Mau Uprising. In Rhodesia, the 1965 Unilateral Declaration of Independence by the white minority resulted in a civil war that lasted until the Lancaster House Agreement of 1979, which set the terms for recognised
independence in 1980, as the new nation of Zimbabwe.[41]

Suppressing the Mau Mau Uprising in the Kenyan colony cost Britain £55 million[16] and caused at least 11,000 deaths among the Mau Mau and other forces, with some estimates considerably higher.[17] This included 1,090 executions by hanging.[17] The rebellion was marked by war crimes and massacres committed by both sides.

UK partitioning of India and Pakistan led to millions of death.

NEW DELHI — The massacres began soon after the British announced partition: Neighbors slaughtered neighbors; childhood friends became sworn enemies.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the partition of India, an event that triggered one of bloodiest upheavals in human history.

About 14 million people are thought to have abandoned their homes in the summer and fall of 1947, when colonial British administrators began dismantling the empire in southern Asia. Estimates of the number of people killed in those months range between 200,000 and 2 million.

Hindus and Sikhs fled Pakistan, a country that would be Muslim-controlled. Muslims in modern-day India fled in the opposite direction.

The legacy of that violent separation has endured, resulting in a bitter rivalry between India and Pakistan.

Britain’s My Lai? Remembering the Batang Kali massacre in Malaysia

On December 12, 1948, British troops massacred 24 civilians in the village of Batang Kali at the height of communist insurgency, the Malayan Emergency. Some regard it as Britain’s My Lai, with the relatives’ of those killed continuing their search for the truth to this day

    Malaya Emergency
The Malayan Emergency, also known as the Anti–British National Liberation War (1948–1960), was a guerrilla war fought in British Malaya between communist pro-independence fighters of the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA) and the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth. The communists fought to win independence for Malaya from the British Empire and to establish a socialist economy, while the Commonwealth forces fought to combat communism and protect British economic and colonial interests.[1][2][3] The conflict was called the “Anti–British National Liberation War” by the MNLA,[4] but an “Emergency” by the British, as London-based insurers would not have paid out in instances of civil wars.[5]

  • No to "select" system:

I think GMS has no idea that UK has no choice but give up some of its colonies. UK lose power after WW2 is the reason, UK give up its colonies. Scotland remains as its colony. GMS also has no idea, UK PM is the main decision maker on giving up UK colony, not Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II support inequality system where royal and noble is a higher class than common. King or Queen select his or her son, daughter as next King or Queen, no election, no democracy. Princes and princesses receive hereditary titles, no meritocracy. King and Queen select whoever they want to high position. “As of September 2022, there are 808 hereditary peers: 29 dukes (including five royal dukes), 34 marquesses, 191 earls, 111 viscounts, and 443 barons (disregarding subsidiary titles).” Imagine a political system where “select” system rule. Dark is the word of UK political system. Very unfair and unjust. Anyone live under inequality system know what it is like. Any rule against the powerful interest is rejected. To make the power continue, citizen welfare and interest is denied. All for money and power, endless tax. All money to who account? Everyone know but cannot say.

  • Real democracy:

Fact. Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952. The process of decolonisation started earlier. India got her independence in 1947. The process of independence was not her decision or her contribution except to rubber stamp.

Malaya got independence in 1957. Singapore self ruled in 1959, joined Malaysia in 1963.

Some fought and died for independence. Some were given independence later, on a silver platter. Some are still colonies till today eg Falkland. Hong Kong was under British rule till 1997.

    How delusional.
If it wasn’t for the British dominance, the great nation of Singapore would simply have been conquered by some Muslims from the surrounding regions and you would all have to drag your sorry asses to the mosque at 3 in the morning. You would proudly believe that your roots lie somewhere in the Arabian desert.

It’s always easy to bash the evil European colonizers, but the alternatives would have been worse.

“Black Slavery and trade in human slaves started off from Colonialism.”

Is that what they teach in school nowadays? Slavery and slave trade existed in every corner of the world before any colonizer ever set foot on a boat. Vikings, Aztecs, Mongols, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and everybody else enslaved and traded people. Arabs became rich way before they discovered oil by trading African slaves, which they bought from African slave traders. Africans enslaved each other since the dawn of time. When Europeans started shipping blacks to America, they didn’t enslave them. They bought them from black slave traders who got very rich in the process.

You are assuming that the Muslims would have forced us to go to the mosque in the morning.Your post reveals your ignorance on Islam. There is no forcing in Islam. Obviously you are not familiar with the Mogul kings of India, like Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan who were Muslims. They allowed Hinduism to be practiced in India.Isn’t it a conditioned mind that makes you think that a British rule is better than an Asian?

There is no forcing in Islam? Try to talk to some women who want to live free and self-determined lives in islamic countries, try to talk to gays. They may give you a very different answer.
You can cherrypick some ancient islamic rulers who were maybe not so bad, but the odds are that Singapore would be poorer, technologically backwards, even less democratic and generally worse off under islamic rule.
If the British colonizers were so bad, why do Sinkies enjoy their most brutal legacy, the caning, so much?

Slavery has become a political topic lately, so like any other political subject it shouldn’t be researched on Wikipedia. You will usually only hear one side of the argument.
And yes, Europeans have created huge demand in the African slave markets. And before then the Arabs were the best customers. But it was still mostly Africans who enslaved their brothers and sisters to sell them to the highest bidder. Putting the blame on the British or Europeans, Arabs or any other single group
    is ridiculous. Everybody did it.

I would even dare to say that the British were responsible for spreading more liberal ideas throughout the world, which laid the groundwork for eventually ending slavery.

My gripe was with GMS stating that colonialism started slavery, which couldn’t be more wrong.
