Pressures and temptations aplenty in spotting world

I refer to the report, “Pressures and temptations aplenty in spotting world, only a rare few can scale the peak and stay there” (TODAY, Sep 10).

There’s a Chinese saying, “There is no undefeated general in war”. Similarly, it is no single athlete or sportsman who will experience the thrill of victory and stand tall all the times.

As all know, the physical strength and mental concentration of every individual will gradually decline while ageing. Any sportsman is not in exception.

It’s meaningless to ponder, pursue and affix the responsibility why some of our sportsmen resort to consumption of prohibited drugs. Rather, we should focus upon their psychological and mental wellbeing besides the extraordinary trainings needed for preparation of winning honour for the country.

We should acknowledge that only when a sportsperson’s physical and mental conditions as well as sentiment are kept in tiptop state, then the chances for him/her to win the competition in any type of sports will be greater.

However, any opportunity of victory also depends upon some external factors, such as the strength of other competitors, synergy and spiritedness generated from home team, weather conditions of the competition venue, pressures and expectations come from the sports fans or their own trainers, etc.

Anyway, all sportsmen need to ponder and ask themselves some key question: Did pressures they receive come from external or innate? To what extent these external pressures surpass innate pressure?

It is of utmost importance that our sportsmen must be duly guided and advised of one maxim: “Do their best and prepare what are necessary and let the destiny take its course”.

Hence, all sportsmen should bear in mind that giving ownself unnecessary innate pressures will not help the situation. It’s all water under the bridge.

Drug addicts should migrate to US, Europe, Thailand, Laos or India, rather than waste their lives in jail. Their mommies must learn to let go.

I saw young Caucasian drug addicts in US and Canada sleeping on CBD streets with entire possessions in stolen shopping carts.

These Caucasian drug addicts own nothing. No house, no job. But they still feel happy when they are high on drugs.

  • Do not create drug idol:

I think people or government should not be paying money to support sportsman taking drug. Once these people who take drug become people idol for the youth and young, it may cause many youth to take drug to follow their path. It will give the wrong message if they continue their job as sportsman. Sportsman who take drug should rehabilitate to be drug free and given post that is not on spotlight to have a new lease of life or second chance. But no more competition, no more a star. Maybe they can be drug rehabilitation people who teach people who take drug to quit.

Schooling and Amanda both delivered medals for the State. They did not fail Singaporeans. Marijuana was banned by the Nixon administration because many Americans associated it with flower power and peace. They did not want to go to Vietnam. American soldiers who were already in Vietnam used to take cannabis as a tension reducer. It is illegal to take cannabis in Vietnam. However the oil made from hemp plants is legal. Medical Marijuana is legal in some countries. I myself know of a American lady, stricken with cancer, who was given three months to live ten years ago , is still alive using medical Marijuana. Canada, Georgia, Malta, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Uruguay etc have legalized recreational use of Cannabis. Instead of using invasive surgery, chemo and pharmaceutical drugs in the treatment of cancer, the use of Marijuana should be allowed by the authorities. Why be against a medical cure because of the Nixon Administration which has long gone? Nature provides all medicine in its natural form and environment. It is those who benefit economically that shut down natural cures and promote man made drugs, selling them as medicine. The use of Marijuana should be the right of every citizen for medical reasons. Many Chinese who smoked opium lived healthily into their late 90′s in the past. Shanmugam shows his ignorance when he condemns Cannabis outright but still is not able to wipe out the use of illegal drugs because of our poor border surveillance.

My two cents – I think many well-intentioned folk here are also misguided ones. An individual may have won medals and accolades for Singapore but this doesn’t excuse him from his wrongdoings. There’s a huge difference between getting results and having integrity. If Schooling is duly rewarded for his achievements, likewise he should be duly punished for his misdeeds like anyone else. No excuses and no double standards. He may be talented but his character is in question. There you go! That’s the whole trouble with our world today when we let celebrities and stars off the hook but crucify others who are average people.

Why talk about the pressures and temptations on our athletes when they are caught taking drugs? Why never talk about our million$ PM/ministers who are highest paid and yet when failed to deliver, simply says No Blaming Culture?

It is futile (even hypocritical) to discuss about ethnics and morality at the lower ranks if the upper ranks are rotten.

    Example:
Man charged with student death is outdoor bound activity. But 8 patients died due to gross mismanagement of SGH/MOH and yet no heads rolled. In fact, that was how the No Blaming Culture excuse was first coined by the then Health Minister.
