Foreign workers sleeping on walk path

Yesterday, I walked from my home to Grassroots Club. On the way, I saw a few foreign workers sleeping on the pathway. It was early in the morning, at around 8.30 am.

I wondered why these workers were not sleeping in the worker dormitory. Maybe, they do not have any work and are not paid, so they cannot afford to pay the rent for the dormitory.

I thought that they might have slept in the dormitory and want to have additional sleep before they start work. But, this does not appear to be the case.

I wanted to submit a report to the government. I thought about what is the channel to make this report.

Should I make a police report? No crime or offense has been committed, so it does not appear to be appropriate to lodge a police report.

Anyway, I had a recent experience of making a police report online regarding an online scam. They require me to answer a complicated template. I gave up due to the difficulty of filling up the template. I am sure that it would be more difficult for me to complete the template to report an incident that may not be an offense.

I wondered if I could use the One Service app to lodge a report. This does not appear to be an issue for the app.

I hope to see, one day, that there is a channel for a citizen to give a feedback to the government on any issue. The civil servant receiving the feedback can decide on the agency to handle the issue. It should not be the responsibility of the citizen to figure out the complexity of the government structure.

  • Make it simple:

KISS. Keep it simple and short for all feedback .Also one contact point for the public.
It is Government employee responsibility to coordinate among themselves.

As for the FW, make sure they have a decent roof for them, No reason to sleep outside. Basic right.

  • Write to Reach:

I also want to complain. MRT seats, bus stop seats taken by foreigners, I as a Singaporean need to stand. Is this still my country? Taxi all on call, I cannot get a taxi when I flag a taxi down. Need to offer wheelchair for rental or free use for poor elderly and disabled. But I know if I write to Reach, they will not deal with the issue. It will be a waste of time. Maybe they will reply, maybe not but I think no action is taken. Why do I need the nice reply when I know nothing will be done with regards to my feedback. I had written so many wonderful ideas to them, they did not do anything. This is the type of government stupid people has vote for. They care nothing for the people feedback. They continue main policy which are unpopular policy like foreign labor policy despite people complain and do not take people each and every feedback seriously. Recently high new citizen and PR number speak everything.

Tan, you are so unlucky not to be voted in as President. Otherwise, you can invite the roadside sleeping foreigners to.sleep in Istana Resort.

  • Trust only myself:

Those FW sleeping outside likely not that they have no dorm or no work……

Imagine a group of them going to different work sites and their transport need to travel to different locations of course more convenient to send them in one trip rather then back to their dorm to fetch few workers each time…..
Those with nearer locations alighted two early for work so they took a nap anywhere they find suitable……jus have to live with it if the liars need them nation building……

  • SINGAROAR:

I saw a worker asleep on the staircase landing while walking up the stairs. It was during lunch time. It disturbed me as it was a first experience. Reading Mr.Tan’s post, I am wondering if these workers are starving as food costs have gone up but surely not their wages. How are these workers actually living? Are they being housed inhumanly as prior to COVID?

  • Relax:

Mr Tan, are you concern about the workers or the public safety?
You can send feedback to “Reach”, it will direct the issue to relevant authority.
For workers’ well-being, you can also send your concern to TWC2 (they had received the same issue before) or MWC.

Response: just wondering did you ask them or just assume?

    Mr. TAn

Don’t worry MOM is building dormitories , They decided to get into the dormitory business for sustainable development if you can understand what that means. It will be ready by 2025 when they will house all these roadside sleeping workers. Just wait.

    And,why so?
    Employers to be blame.
    Agents too.
Worst, why govt/MOM does not ensure FWs are taken care of the way the G raided $100 billion of our sg’s reserves to save so many HIGHLY PAID FTs’ job$?

  • SINGAROAR:

How is it there is no prosecution of owners of dormitories that had housed workers in cramped and poorly ventilated buildings?JT used public funds in getting her other half to build housing for the workers during COVID.This bill should be recovered from the dormitory owners.

  • Observer:

Several years ago, I saw an amazing sight of a extremely obese man and his extremely obese wife both waddling in a neighborhood shopping centre. Behind them were their two fat plump daughters. And finally at the back was a skinny domestic migrant worker carrying many shopping bags and trying to keep up.

Imagine the teenage girls being plump at such young age, how are they going to control their weight when they grow older. Can they ever hope to attract a fu-er-dai/ rich-man’s-son?

  • PAP mandate strong:

    Well no big issue.

Construction workers working along the road side, in the afternoon during they would sleep under the nearest void deck during their lunch time. Those solar panel installation workers same thing. Same building after they had lunch they take a short nap under the void deck. Muslim workers sometime at one corner they would pray.

What about evening when so many beer drinkers at coffeeshop. There was once a young sg chap about early 30s drunk along the roadside next to carpark. His samsung phone drop out beside him. Very tempting.
