More foreign indian doctors from India

I read it online with disquiet and trepidation that our Ministry of Health is looking to recruit about 240 foreign indian doctors from India.

I want to make it absolutely clear that I am not a racist. I am never a racist in my life.

In fact, some of my best friends during my NS days were fellow indian soldiers and even today, I have good indian neighbours.

As far as health care and medical treatments are concerned, I will also have no issue at all being attended to by Singapore indian doctors but for me or my loved ones to be attended to by foreign indian doctors in our government hospitals or polyclinics, hahahaha…I will say thank you very much.

I have no confidence or faith in their competency, training or so called qualifications etc. I would rather err on the side of safety.

I do not wish to be a guinea pig. I will repeatedly remind my elderly mother whenever she goes for her regular polyclinic appointments to insist on being attended to by a Singapore doctor including Singapore indian doctors.

I trust that our educational system produces properly qualified and superior doctors and among the challenges, the failure to produce sufficient qualified doctors to meet our growing demands is 100% the failure and the faults of the pap government, a government that knows much better at paying itself the world’s highest political salaries. I do not wish for her to be a guinea pig either.

I ask if it is wrong to be too careful.

Think.

  • Trust only myself:

On one hand there is limited intake for medical students in local universities and now need to recruit hundreds of doctors from overseas…….what is the reason behind this?

Of course the liars know……….but shouldn’t the liars be sacked long time ago, if not for unthinking Singaporeans.

Much much cheaper to hire indian doctors than to train local ones – do the sums yourselves
Additional cost of foreign doctors are also borne by the patients.
Let the PAP voters suffer more and they MIGHT wake up – stupidity is one of those conditions where there is still NO CURE.
I can afford private medical services in addition to my privileges.
Economical gains is the SOLE OBJECTIVE of the PAP.

Some years ago at the Singapore National Eye Centre I was attended to by a doctor from India. What should have been a simple, straightforward routine eye screening turned out a harrowing and traumatising experience due to the doctor’s clumsiness and heavy handedness. He conducted eye check-ups like a mechanic examining a car’s engine.

    1. cost, just like shortage of fish, the price jumps.
    2. alternate source, that is why LW went to India last week for CECA talk.

Why is Singapore short of Doctors?, we do not have such policy as to have family doctor assign to each citizen, where large pool of doctors are needed.

Singapore medical insurance is a scam, paying $500-$600 a year in medi-save/shield but when you see doctor, you need to pay consultation fee and medicine cost.
In Canada a family of 4 pay less than $150 a month about $600 a year (now free for some province) for medical coverage, anybody can walk into a clinic or family doctor, is all FREE but only pay for medicine, doctors can send you for whatever test need are also FREE. Blood test, breast cancer test, MRI, X-ray, any test refer by doctor are FREE. Angiogram surgery are FREE.

She had rashes on her arm and we sent her to the hospital. After one week, her rashes healed and we brought her home. Next day my wife wanted to bathe for her and found that there was a plaster on her buttock. She removed the plaster and found a hole on her buttock. Nobody from the hospital had informed us.

We sent her back to the hospital. After four weeks stay. she died. The doctor who treated her was from India. Very Frustrating. WTF

To go to university to take up medicine? Same as lawyers ! I remember one father griping
about his son not being able to attend a university fr a law dregree cause of the quotas. He was very upset. In the end he sent his son overseas. Let me ask you. Will This angry father want his son to return
    to work here?

I too wont want an indian doctor. Language is one thing! Can we understand them? Older and less rich patients: how will they be treated?
Let me cite something. An india indian nurse told my sister. Let me see your foot fingers.
    Guess what! Toes!
This is simple. English here is not necessarily their english.

All these years and we cant produce enough doctors. Yes we could. Theyre overly stressed i think or the pay isnt enough fr the work they do!
So how will these indian drs fare. ?

Really dont have trust on these indian doctors. My late mum was seen by an indian doc and upon her touching her chest, he concluded that my mum got heart problem. Unfortunately at SGH, he cannot correct errors and I had to go through a long series from dept to dept before the correction can be made. when it is pay for stupid folks who voted pap, anything more than S$1 is unaffordable for the government.

  • Crap Docs from India:

Something is seriously wrong with our Govt !!

Let me quote you an incident.

My mum was admitted to Ang Mo Kio Community hospital sometime ago. She is 84 yrs old recovering from hip injury. This hospital is jointly run by Thye Hua Kwan Association. There were two doctors, both from India and only can speak English and Hindi. 99% of the older patients in this hospital are Chinese, Malay or Indians and most can’t speak english. I saw firsthand how the India doctors were unable to communicate with my mum and each time a local nurse needs to be present to translate. I was shocked and felt very sorry for my mum as she could not effectively communicate with these doctors, who cant speak any Mandarin, Hokkien, Malay or Tamil, as these are commonly spoken by Singaporeans.

Since 70%-90% of patients in this hospital were older Chinese and with most nurses are from Philippines, I felt very sorry for our Snr citizens. Govt knows this situation and they just dont bother much. Even Thye Hua Kwan Association is seen closing one eye. Not sure if these 2 docs are still at this hospital now.

I feel our Govt made huge policy decision years ago for not allowing more Singaporeans to study medicine in NUS, only realizing now there is a “shortfall” of doctors and need to recruit from India. Pathetic and unwarranted !!!

Most of the Indian docs will use Singapore as a stepping stone to build their experience and will later relocate to US, Europe, ANZ counties for better pay and life-balance. :(

India has limited capacity to train doctors domestically, thus they have large numbers of citizens receiving medical education overseas.

For instance, there were more than ten thousand Indian students in China attending medical courses in China universities pre pandemic time.

Before the Ukraine/Russia military conflict, there were also more than ten thousands Indian medical students in Ukraine.

Training background of doctorfrom India is diverse and quite different, how they will fit into Singapore health care system will be something required careful study.

A significant presence of doctors from India would be something with strong impact on both sinkie in general and doctors locality trained.

  • CECA effect:

Upon expiry of the 5-year CECA and resigning, India government will ask for more jobs right?. Initially signed in 2005, the beginning of mass import of them by converting all construction workers from Thai to India nationals, shipbuilding to India nationals, larger import than before of India nationals into IT, Finance/Banking jobs, then gradually you see a lot more of them in hospitals as doctors & nurses, in LTA, IDA, PUB, etc. stat boards, R&D /academic institutions, restaurants & retails (correct me if I am wrong). There are also job schemes specifically for India nations such as SIA pilot training program aimed for employing SIA Singapore-India bound flight pilots, DBS special talent sponsorships/scholarships for India nationals (in IT right? Somebody can clarify and correct me) and not sure what else more.

In the 2005 CECA, india ask for 127 professional and semi skilled job types for a start right? Wonder how many now.

Are India nationals from India having the world class productivity, worker ethnic? I commonly read articles about them being 5 times slower than China in delivery (perhaps 3 times slower with presence of Singaporean supervisors). Our construction workers from India are renowned for poor productivity why continue to employ them (bcos of CECA?) when you have the very productive Thai workers that can help lower our construction costs thus our HDB prices! Do you think India national professionals and semi skilled fare better?

CECA has become a poor productivity (and perhaps quality) trap for our economy?

OP, reading your post, it seems that indian imported doctors are idiots, and only singaporean doctors are amazing and accurate all the time. You forget that all doctors are only human and any human can make mistakes or excel in diagnosis. Nothing special in my experience with Singapore doctors, so I feel this discrimination is unnecessary. It should be the responsibility of pap to do proper due diligence, before letting them in.
