Richard Branson invited to debate with Shanmugam on Singapore’s anti-drug policy and death penalty

Richard Branson

I express my opinions as a citizen.

I want to start my commentary by stating clearly that I am a strong supporter of Singapore’s anti-drug and death penalty, however, I strongly disagree with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) decision to invite Richard Branson (RB) to a debate on this issue with K. Shanmugam. Let me explain.

Our stance on anti-drug and the death penalty are not new. They are decades old and they are world renowned and Singaporeans across generations know it in their bones that such laws protect us, keep our streets, our families and our society safe and for those people who wish to game it knowingly for whatever reasons, it is reasonable to believe that non were caught by their ignorance.

I can imagine the enormous pressure including those that came from outside of Singapore that our old guard ministers faced during their time regarding our anti-drug and death penalty but they didn’t blink or flinch one inch. The late LKY or his colleagues didn’t invite critics of our anti-drug and death penalty to any debate, much less offered to pay for their airfares and accommodation in Singapore.

In my blunt manner of putting it, doing so is open season for both our weakness and madness on public display of the very high level.

‘You will not reach your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks’- Winston Churchill.

To me, I consider MHA’s decision to invite and foot RB’s airfare and accomodation expenses to debate KS to be a poor judgement call, an outright waste of our resources and funds and a misuse of ministerial time. At worst, it is a calculated political showmanship and wayang.

From time to time, there will be people, both local and foreigners who will criticise our policies and that is nothing new. We cannot stop them.

Now, it is anti-drug and the death penalty and entertaining and providing a platform or pedestal for critics to a debate will only encourage and tempt even more. It is setting a very bad precedence. It exposes a certain weakness of conviction and confidence in our political leaders and senior people in the government and I dislike that.

Domestic affairs should only and exclusively be reserved for Singaporeans and I will have not qualm if MHA and KS invite Singaporeans who oppose our anti-drug and the death penalty to any debate but not foreigners who have no stake in our country and are not responsible for our wellbeing and our survival.

Think.

  • Simple Simon:

Simple Simon, it’s not the drug and death issue, it’s the person. Ask yourself, why don’t they debate with any Liz, Dick, Harry?

Who gains from this debate? Someone not enough dignity yet.

    The death penalty?
It is the lesser of the two evil.

    CNA *KEH KIAN*!
SG is just a tiny RED DOT in SE ASIA .
CNA thinks it is the ONLY NEWS AGENCY that managed to *CAPTURE* the HU JIN-TAO’s incident *in full*???

Angmohs PLAY IT SMART by just showing superficial clips of the incident.
CNA THINKS IT IS CIA OR MR BOND.

WHY SUBJECT SG TO SUCH DIPLOMATIC RISKS?
I am sure ANGMOHS have captured just as much but dont want to reveal.
What are we trying to achieve here?
    That CNA IS NUMBER ONE?
    DAFT ACT.
