Raising the wages of our lower wage workers

'Zorro' Lim Swee Say

I support National Wages Council’s (NWC) recommendation of raising the wages of our lower wage workers by 5.5% to 7.5% or at least $80 to $100, whichever is higher.

I want to stress that I am forever mindful that wages cannot run ahead of productivity and that workers’ productivity has to go up to justify their wage increases and that is why former pap manpower minister, Lim Swee Say jumped in Parliament and rejected outright the once NWC’s chairman Professor Lim Chong Yah’s suggestion of giving our lowest income workers a mere $50/ wage increase. (For those who are unfamiliar with this incident, just goggle because the internet doesn’t forget).

Everybody knows that Singapore is a very expensive place to live in and low income workers are just so very, very many. They have family members too, both the seniors and/or the juniors at home to take care of.

In the face of high inflation, rising cost of living and the implementation of the first 1% point increase in GST next year, I say we can and should be a little lax and generous. In times like these, having a bigger heart is more important than having a bigger head.

I differ from former pap manpower minister Lim Swee Say and by extension the pap government’s cold, inflexible and heartless approach and mentality. Our low income earners are not aliens. They are one of us and we are together only as strong as our weakest link.

Having commented the above, the government, the employers and the unions must together never, never rest on their laurels and their fat salaries and allow our workers productivity to lapse too far behind.

Think.

Wages and productivity The PAP government keeps harping on the idea that wage increase must go up only with productivity increase. Look at the PAP team, their minister’s, mayor and MP’s pay are out of this world but look at their productivity, it is really terrible. Number of MP per million population, mininister per million, or per million square m. If a company operates with their level of productivity it would be forced out of business right away.

How do you measure productivity of worker LHL? How do you measure productivity of worker Ah Loong cleaning your HDB block? All are subjective.

Everything is getting more expensive but the wages rise for the lower group are not enough to cope.

  • clowns are clowns:

Ya! I remember very clearly that this clown was the first one to jumped up in parliament when LCY proposed to increase the lowest rung of worker’s wages!!
He also commented that once the worker’s wages increased all the factories will close shop and shift to other countries!!

*Wages must increase only with productivity*?
Well,ok,i can agree to an extent.
Now,do you apply this across the board?
Lets just look at the NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY Before and After The Heavy Influx of so-called *CBF*(cheaper, faster, betterer) FTs.
Are FTs remaining at low levels?
Are they CHEAPER THAN SG-PMEs they replaced?
Now,WHY NOT PLOT A CHART WITH FTs’ PRODUCTIVITY ON THE Y AXIS AND SALARIES OF FTs on the X Axis over 30 years and see HOW THE now expensive FTs’ Productivity measures up to their INCREASED WAGES?

ALSO,in conjunction, plot National Productivity on Y axis vs Incremental nimbers OF FTs on X axis to see if MORE FTs means HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY over PAST 30 YEARS.
I hazard AS NUMBER OF FTs went Higher (more sgs got replaced),NATIOMAL PRODUCTIVITY WENT LOWER.

    SO MUCH FOR FT POLICY.

  • Salary not enough:

Do you think 5.5% to 7.5% increase of salary is enough? It is not enough. We have to think of the overall picture. Can these workers buy such expensive flats and pay such high interest to live in? Everything which are necessity like food increase with such high percentage, such increase is never enough. The problem of inflation is supply side problems, we have to fix it. Businesses behaving like loan shark must be stop.

Yes, I agreed. A little heart goes a long way.

Our great PAP had mean testing to verify and make sure that financial assistance are disburse only to the real needy, not fake or scammer.

Singaporeans are free riders and we need mean testing to weed them out.

Singaporean lies to get financial assistance.

  • PAP the Narcissist:

After a platoon of ex McKinsey Consultants left the Singpost in a heap, Lim was brought in as their new Board Director member.

Already many sun rises and sun sets has whizzed by – what did this EFFker done, collect Millions shaking kegs in his PLUSH OFFICE?

Singpost as an almost monopoly HAS its shares still hugging lows of 50~60 cts when earlier days at $1.30′s they brought in the McKinseys aiming to shoot even higher, probably eyeing $2.00 a share.

    Well well well.

    Another LED TO BELIEVE STORY.
