Someone suggested a new visitor management system (VMS) to manage visitors to a location (i.e. condo or an office).
1. The host sends out an invite by SMS to the visitor.
2. The visitor clicks on the SMS to display a screen with a QR code, address, unit, date and time of visit.
3. On arriving at the location, the visitor scans the QR code at the entry gate.
4. The QR code is checked against the server. If valid, the gantry gate opens.
5. This system requires the visitor to have a mobile phone, which is likely to be universal.
6. For visitors without a mobile phone, the host has to meet them at the entry gate and allow access with an host’s access card.
7. Visitors who drives a car to the condo get access using the mobile phone of the driver. There is no need to recognize the license plate of the car.
8. The location can still employ a concierge who has the duty to guide visitors who are not familiar with the process or to give directions. As the concierge does not need to manage the access, he or she will have more time to give attention to the visitor and reduce the waiting time.
9. As Singapore is short of security guards, this approach can save on manpower to handle the access control. The security guard can be used more effectively for other security duties. This approach also creates jobs for concierge, which is more staff and customer friendly.

What if the link in the SMS was forwarded to non-authorized people? The verification aspect is weak. Whoever proposed this needs to work harder….on some non-disputable means of verification e.g. 2FA.
