I refer to The Independent Singapore’s Opinion, “If we respect our Singapore elders, then why many still doing backbreaking jobs, and other stories in review” (Feb 11).
It is certainly glad to learn that a group of netizens went viral for going all out to help elderly man Ng Teak Boon to clean up his 1-room rental flat, as reported by TODAY on Oct 26, 2022.
The 90-year-old – hunched over due to old age – is well-known as the “ice cream cart uncle” outside Sim Lim Tower. This is a heartwarming case which is as rare as phoenix feathers.
However, we need to ask, how many untold or unheard stories of elderly Singaporeans or low-income citizens who suffer financial predicament and work as cleaners in our hawker centres, collecting cardboard for sale, gig workers or working as casual manual workers in warehouses or sea ports?
All these require the attention from our policymakers and render them whatever assistance they need.
Surely, as a affluent country like Singapore can allocate more resources to tackle the touchy and pertinent social issues rather than the non-significant issue. For example,
Whether is it meaningful or making sense for the Authority to mobilise its resources to continue investigating the conduct of Workers’ Party leaders Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap over the matter of ex-WP member of parliament Raeesah Khan lying in Parliament, respective individuals/Singaporeans have an answer in their hearts.
It is clear cut that ex-WP member of parliament (MP) Raeesah Khan chose to lie herself in the parliament.
A Chinese saying has clearly depicted this incident, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink”.
It’s why another Chinese saying echoes, “The wise man knows he knows nothing, the fool thinks he knows all”.
Issues which stoke the sensitivity of the people
In the case of Ivan Lim, it is commonly perceived as “Ownself check ownself”.
As the Member of Parliament Tin Pei Ling will be redeployed as Grab’s Director of Corporate Development is perceived by the netizens as “New wine in old bottles” or, “A same old stuff with a different label”.
Whether any possibility of a conflict of interest, is yet to be seen and judged?

In First World countries a living wage is established. Those whose retirement funds do not reach the minimum wage,they will get the difference from the govt. It is all set up well.There is no need for the elderly to beg their govts. if their retirement funds are insufficient. The govts.are into good governance of the State and citizens. If one starts paying social security at the age of 25, you will have to pay social security for 40 years until you retire at the age of 65. It is conservatively estimated that you will have to pay RMB400,000. The pension can receive about RMB2,200 per month, just simple maths, it takes at least 17 years to get the principal back, which requires living to the age of 82. How many people are confident that they will live to 82 years old? RMB400,000 for one person, RMB800,000 for a couple. And the insurance premiums have been rising.
Taking Dongguan, Guangdong as an example, 10 years ago, the social security payment was RMB800 per month, and later increased to RMB900, and now it has to pay more than RMB1,000 per month.
Just like SG, kept raising retirement age, change this to that, what can you do?
Whatever China wants to fake it, its Social Security is just like our CPF and those many complicated CPF Schemes, and to make sure you draw down as late as posible, as hard as possible and as lesser as possible.
Tech: Unless one is employed, 社保 is optional. Like CPF, the monthly payment for the insurance is mostly covered by the employer, hence the 五险一金. In my case, both my wife and me are not gainfully employed, so we choose to pay only for those we need (医保) and then supplyment it with private insurance policies. Social Security insurance is one of those we did NOT subscribe to, we choose 20-year private insurance policy to replace it and then medical insurance to supplement the 医保.

Now can no longer pay that amount of money to individual account, that’s why need to reduce nearly 2/3 payout and give excuse that the missing money will go to support those with high medical visit frequencies. But not without more co-payment.
First it (China) gave money like try to create SG medi-save style for individuals.
Then it create pooling like insurance style which the americans and westerners doing, and most recently SG did it at national level, compulsory for all.

Not to say GST or VAT became such a wonderful tax system to manage reduced income. Who will complain about getting more money? Not even a government which produces nothing.
VAT in China is even higher than Singapore currently.

Coming back to China (or the world) national medical insurance thing… (oh yes remember what is Obama Care? No? Same same lah)
By pooling more resources together under an ‘insurance’ system, it definitely seems working. However, as time goes by, without a good proportion (increase) of young generation in the population demographic, the only sure way is to increase premium being paid. While payout will be increased too.
However, when we go into the details of premium increase rate versus payout rate, we always almost 100% sure that the premium increase rate out-paced payout rate at obvious level. This is very normal.
Premium increase $400 per month to $420 and give you a medical payout rate of $150,000 to $170,000 seems like a good deal?
$240 more a year and covers you another $20k? What a good deal!
You just need to pay for 7 years and technically you will be losing money after that for the $20k increase of payout. Then, time to change again so that all the maths just couldn’t catch up. Not to mention different premium for different age group.

I had wanted to STFU but given the misleading twist in the way that the information is presented, I am tempted to interject and clarify.
For starters, medical insurance (医保) is NOT payable monthly but yearly, and it is NOT $420 as suggested. This year it is RMB $300+ (regardless of age group) and is ONLY revised yearly (but seldom), before C19, it was and has always been only $200+. There is no such thing as a cash payout upon maturity because it is meant to cover up to 80% of ALL eligible medical expenses, including outpatient and hospitalization, medicinal, and operation charges. There is no limit to the amount of coverage so technically, if one is warded for 365 days, it will cover up to 80% of the entire 365 days.
As I have said, China has 4 Insurance and 1 Fund, as far as I can remember, the ones that have cash payouts are old age (养老), social (社保) and CPF (公积金), mostly paid by employers (includes all full-time civil servants), but optional for people like me, who are not officially employed. In all fairness, it is best that one understand which insurance one is talking about before making a general statement. One needs a good understanding of China’s 4险1金 to draw a meaningful conclusion as to whether it really does benefit the populace at large.
Lastly, it is worth noting that the insurance I mentioned above is mostly paid by employers as long as the insured remains employed. It then becomes optional once they leave employment, but most would continue to pay out of their own pocket to avoid losing out on the cash payout when it matures.

If you are always stress out by work all the time, then you know the labor policies do not work.
If a leader hunts his own blood out of the nation and selects his own private secretary to take over, and the new kid on the block tries to distinct himself from his master, then you know history repeats itself; you know the policies are failing. The economy is stagnant for the last 2 decades. If you keep seeing foreigners around you, and you cannot recognise your own SGreans, then you know the policies are not working.
