Operating a $18,000 a month bazaar

1. Someone complained that the rental of a stall for the Ramadan Bazaar is $18,000 a month, or $600 a day.
2. This is a high rental. The stall operators need to generate revenue of $600 a day just to cover the rental. There is also the cost of workers and the cost of the goods that are sold.
3. The high rental will have to be covered by the high prices paid by customers. The stall operator needs to work long hours to generate enough revenue to cover the cost and hopefully make a profit.
4. Is it feasible to set the stall rental at a modest rate, maybe $3,000 a month or $100 a day. With lower rental, will the stall operators sell their products at lower prices, and make the customer happy with a good deal?
5. There are many stalls in the bazaar. Several stalls will sell similar products, and provide competition. It is likely that the prices will be lower, when the rentals are reduced. This will be good for the stall holders and the customers.
6. If the rentals are kept at a modest rate, instead of “what the market can bear”, how should the stalls be allocated to the applicants?
7. The operator can set a panel to decide on the allocation of the stalls, based on the applications received. The applicants should be a bona fide community organization, business or individual, who have experience in operating the type of stall. If several applicants are suitable, the allocation can be decided by public ballot.
8. The bazaar should be run by a community organization, which has the goal of operating it for the benefit of the community, and not generate the maximum revenue from the rental of the stalls.
9. I hope that the government understands that there is another way of operating a bazaar instead of the “market model”.
