The Senseless Policy Of Qualifying Salaries For Foreigners

I refer to the Qualifying salaries for Spass, EP and others and the “minimum qualifying salaries” implemented rules by MOM (LINK)

I cant help notice the flaw of this policy. The have set a minimum wage model for the foreigners in the hope of discourging companies to hire more locals. In the first place such a scheme of things means they are admitting that they are have been faciliating low wage labour expliataion of locals in the past decades. but when it comes to foreigners they realised that such a model doesnt work in attracting workers to the city state given its unpredictable relentless increase in cost of living, which in reality can apply to any society in the world. Howeve this policy is highly flawed. By setting a minimum wage for foreigners means a maximum ceiing for the asking salaries of locals. For example if the minimum wage for Spass is $3000, it means that a fresh graduate can only posibly ask lower than $3000 as compared to a foreign employee (either expereinced or inexpereinced).In short this minumum criteria means a maxmum ceiling for salaries. If this model supposedly works , why arent the other devloped countries following the same?

In this case the fresh grduate loses out on the oppotunity for employment as the companies can hire a foreign expereinced employee at $3000. The same goes for the $5000 qualifying salary for EP. This whole scheme fo things goes against free martet wages and cost of living. It is sad to say that in this scheme of things ,arbitary criteria is set that restricts the asking salaries of both locals and foreigners and ishighly dependent on this criteria setting ( which will need constant intervention to increase the requirements as time goes by).

    Disagree, minimum wage for foreigners ultimately benefits singaporean.

    It ensure that foreigners employed in Singapore can afford our cost of living. And it also filters away cheapskate foreigners who suppressed our wage. It allows us to raise our living standard benefiting commercially and real estate-lly.

    This minimum salary nonsense has been around for ages and the same excuse is always trotted out by PAP. It has NEVER resulted in companies hiring fewer aliens because small companies can (and will) save on the levy by asking the worker to return part of the salary. Sure, a few companies have been prosecuted for doing this but ask yourself why this continual raising of the minimum salary has NEVER worked? Why do you still see these aliens in hordes at your workplace if it really is too expensive to hire them?

    And now these MNCs are getting in the act of whining about how high the rents for their expats have gotten, what a joke. Who ask you to have so many of these clowns in Singapore in the first place, locals cannot do the job meh? They are talking about moving out of Singapore if this continues. Holy siao man, a big MNC actually whinging about high costs when they didn’t say shit when times were good and they were making the big bucks wow!

    Go F out of Singapore if you want, a lot of aliens will lose their jobs if you do so since we all know they form a significant majority in any company. Go lah, go lah we don’t need you!

    Are you saying that the minimum salary set for the FTs to be eligble for SP/EP is the maximum that a local can ask for if he/she wants to be considered for the position? Salaries and wages are therefore being suppressed because of this. After CPF deduction, the local will end up getting less in take home pay. Not only do FTs get to keep the full amount of their salaries but they get a whole lot more when converted to their home currencies. In short, foreigners create competition instead of jobs! LOL!

    The IMPLEMENTATION IS SIMPLY DISASTROUS N HAVE BEEN DESTROYING THE LIVELIHOODS OF ORDINARY sgs the last 20/25 years.
    The rise in EX-PMETs taking up Food Panda n Grab Food jobs is a clear consequence.
    For so-called FTs who were mostly jobless in tbeir home countries,the Sg govt helps them to uplift themselves by down-casting our own sgs.

    Dishonest people who used fake degrees will laugh at Singapore government workers.

    Inflation will make the minimum salaries meaningless, when Northeast Asian baby boomer generation stop working and spend their savings.

    SG, Australia, USA (44 States) and China do not have inheritance tax. But Japan, Korea and Europe has inheritance tax.

    Inheritance tax can easily be avoided using gold, unlisted businesses and art.

    The writer is technically right. I was a former HR and local Singaporean who worked for MNC. The hiring is horrible in Singapore with lot of job mismatches and local candidates being sidelined.. It’s because those hiring Foreigners are foreigners themselves. Foreigners do not care they just come for the salary and money . They don’t need to even do their job. Just wait for monthly salary every month

    $heeple are okay with it. They have already voted time and again to keep this model. $inkies have even realised the yare not good enough for these positions and have voluntarily given them up to be Grab drivers for FT.     Whether the G continues dumping FAKE TALENTS(FT) into crowd-out Sg,its all up to the younger voters themselves to decide.
    Younger voters are more educated n shud be more able to decide if voting for the same PAPple would mean more FTs here to take over their jobs.
    The WP needs to take lead to unite the oppo sgs.
    If WP does not want to do so,other oppo parties such as PSP OR SDP could take lead to do so.
    Frankly,the lack of oppo unity is a major impediment to oppo garnering more votes.
    A fragmented oppo is a LAME OPPO ,loke it or not.
    An UNITED OPPO ex-WP shud also stand in wards currently run by WP.

    Just because there’s some nepotism and unfair hiring practices, one should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
    We all know who the worst offenders are, but we can’t say it out loud or target that group for closer hiring practice inspection. Instead the government comes up with stupid rules that hurt everybody.

    If the MNCs leave, a lot of Sinkies will loose their cozy office jobs and high salaries. Then the whole SG economy will only consist of people vaccinating and delivering chicken rice to each other.

    Time to check the pay and the work the FT do to see whether it is really justified.
    Sometimes they are overpaid when such job can be easily done by local.Need to find out why as they could have exploited existing loophole to bring their related here.
    More so when related are in the same company.
