Shortage of bus drivers
Some people said that there is a shortage of bus drivers, which caused a problem in operating our bus services.
In my insignificant view, this problem can be solved, if LTA is properly managed.
Here are the possible solutions:
1. There are too many buses (on some services) that are underutilized. The buses can be reduced, hence reducing the need for drivers.
2. We now operate over 300 services. They can be rationalized to 150 services by avoiding duplication and encourage transfers. This will reduce the number of buses.
3. Over the longer term, some of the local services can be self driving, but a conductor (elderly person) can be employed to guide the passengers and report issues to the control center.
I have given this suggestion to LTA, but they don’t care.
Tan Kin Lian
To reduce the number of services will cause inconvenience to many who need it.

Nothing to do with availability of workers.

@Mr. Tan;
“… there is a shortage of bus drivers,…”. This is only an excuse for importation of foreigners!
“.. some of the local services can be self driving,..”, self driving doesn’t mean no driver, our traffic laws still not ready for this!
“I have given this suggestion to LTA, but they don’t care.” that’s because your suggestion sucks!

China had tested the concept in a secluded track and the result was unsatisfactory. They pit an AI-driven car against an experienced driver with multiple hurdles, the AI car crashed in many instances.
Somehow I get the feeling that while the AI can do everything faster than a human, what it lacks is common sense and experience.
And unless the AI can learn from its mistakes, it can never think like a human.
I say give it time, the AI concept needs more time.

Everything is not enough in Singapore. The infrastructure is not in place to handle the increase in population. Costs are rising without wages increasing The only solution for these problems is to remove the cause of the problem which is the PAP. We should try to move back to LKY’S population figure of 4.2 million. We will save our forests and have a better quality of life. No need for increases but work to decrease. Live as a minimalist.

Plenty of Insurance Salesmen; disguised as ”financial planners” and other very exotic sounding titles.
Plenty of Property Agents and ‘consultants’ and other exotic sounding titles.

Is this author is completely out of his tree! Have you EVER been a passenger on a bus, have you EVER in the last 5 years WALKED anywhere in the heartland close to a shopping mall, MRT station or a bus interchange, by what you have written you have not and if you have you are deaf, blind and still out of your tree! There would be no shortage as one contributor said above, increased the pay scale. Singapore is a very rich country but pay for public servants (excluding government ministers, highest paid int he world) like bus drivers, train operators etc are some of the lowest in the “first,” world rates. All you have to do is google how much a bus driver in any other first world country makes, no blah blah blah about we pay less taxes, there are other factors like sociaL service, free medical etc., RISE THEIR PAY, PRESTO NO SHORTAGE. And while you are googling ask what first world cities allow PMD’s, E-Biles and Bicycles on pathways if you want a surprise, maybe Singapore is slipping behind not ahead and definitely not green by any stretch of the imagination. Really sometimes you write some very dump pieces and this qualifies as top notch!

Shortage of bus drivers because a lot of people too lazy to walk. Now they can ride around in motorised vehicles for so called handicappped.
All these people damn eentitled in beehavior. As though others must give way to them. And pose a nuisance and hindrance to pedestrians. Not to mention noisy nuisance on MRT.
They are too freaking lazy to walk, that’s why get diabetes.
Want to ride bikes and PMDs, go use the main road with cars.

Please use free mobile apps to find out when the next bus would be arriving instead of sitting at the bus stop for more than 15 mins and then complaining about ‘shortage of bus drivers’.
A little planning for the bus trip goes a long way.
Trying to get LTA to ‘improve’ the bus services is just asking for another fare hike.

Mr Tan, LTA did heed your advice by shortening bus route to avoid duplication, for eg, bus 22, 66 and 506, and saved $9.5m annually. However Mr Giam of WP also raised the concern of inconveniences caused to the residents of bedok reservoir especially elderly and people with disabilities.
Just wondering is it shortage of drivers or cutting down expenses?
