Blank votes and Spoilt votes

Author: Many friends have told me that they will cast blank votes or spoilt votes in this coming presidential election. They cannot agree to a system that favours the elites. It is all a wayang (a show, usually quite dramatic as in a Chinese opera). They oppose the onerous conditions imposed on a person who wishes to qualify as a candidate – the deposit of S$48,000 which will be forfeited should the candidate fail to obtain 12.5% of the total votes cast and the further requirement that he must be a CEO of a company with shareholders’ equity of S$500 million. These conditions leave only a couple of hundred people from the private sector to qualify as candidates. How can he be called a PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT? Such a president can only be a millionaire or billionaire in society. If Nelson Mandela lives in Singapore, he will never be a president.
In my opinion, a blank vote and a spoilt vote is equivalent to depriving ourselves of a right as citizens. Only Singaporeans can vote. It is a valuable right, no matter what the vote is for.
The older generation takes the significance of casting a blank or spoilt vote as a symbol of courage and rejection of a system. They recall the Singapore referendum for integration into the Federation of Malaya in 1962. Coincidentally that referendum also falls on 1 September.
The Barisan Sosialis objected to the three options for integration put forward for the people to choose. They failed to include an option that they do not wish to join the Federation. These were the options:
OPTION A
I support merger giving Singapore autonomy in labour, education and other agreed matters as set out in Command Paper No. 33 of 1961, with Singapore citizens automatically becoming citizens of Malaysia.
OPTION B
I support complete and unconditional merger for Singapore as a state on an equal basis with the other eleven states in accordance with the Constitutional documents of the Federation of Malaya.
OPTION C
I support Singapore entering Malaysia on terms no less favourable than those given to the Borneo territories.
Blank and spoilt votes garnered 26.11% of the total votes cast. This is a significant percentage in my view but I am told that the expectation was much higher. This “low” count was attributed to fear that was created by the PAP who had put forward Option A. They threatened that a spoilt or blank vote would be counted as a vote for Option A. In the end, with a score of of 95.82% for Option A, it was unnecessary to include spoilt or blank votes into Option A.
The results of the referendum was a great setback for the opposition because Option A garnered 95.82% of the valid votes cast. See table below. Spoilt and blank votes were excluded from the tally. The PAP therefore enjoyed tremendous support from the people and the protest votes were swiftly forgotten when Operation Coldstore took place the following year.
The method of counting votes today is the same as that in 1962. Spoilt and blank votes are discounted. In 2011, the results of the presidential election were as follows:

Tan Cheng Bock
738,311 34.85%
Tan Jee Say
530,441 25.04%
Tan Kin Lian
104,095 4.91%
Spoilt and blank votes accounted for 1.76% of the total votes cast.
Many people complained that Tan Kin Lian was the spoiler. If he had not gone into the race, Dr Tan Cheng Bock would have been our president. To me, this is incorrect. It was the spoilt and blank votes that skewed the election. If they were cast for Dr Tan Cheng Bock, he would have won! See Table below.
I think it is important to cast a valid vote. A vote for Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam is a vote for the PAP as we know he is the anointed candidate. For the other two, I leave it to your imagination.

How do you know that these ‘spoilt votes’ – if cast – would be for TCB and therefore win the election for him? In the same way – the voters from TKL may not choose TCB and prefer TJS or even TT instead. There is no way to know who would have won if TKL was not in the race. You are making up theories that are not logical nor defensible.

If you want a PAP’s extension, vote for Tharman.
If you want a person depending on PAP for survival in business, vote for Ng.

That’s the level of IQ of a major section of the electorate who will be going to the ballot box on Sept 1.

Just wondering a few things:
1) for those elderly who are not sure what’s going on, will they just cross/stamp on the first box, so whoever’s name is on the first box will have a higher chance to win?
2) some elderly might just stamp every box, misterpreting based on the sample given?
3) unintentional spoilt votes are unavoidable, maybe only practise makes perfect. But intentional spoilt/blank votes, what do you achieve in the end?

Some of the things that presidential candidates have failed to answer:
- un-injected under the VDS period were banned from indoor places over a 99.7% survivable flu with dining areas banned until October 2022, even though as Sinkies our tax dollars went into these places, injected foreigners who never served NS were free to use these places
- the Tripartite Fair Work Place institution failed to protect the employment rights of un-injected under the medical apartheid laws known as ‘VDS’ & the courts threw out a case brought by Miss Han Hui Hui addressing the issue against the MTF who imposed these illegal laws that violated Nuremberg Laws for Medical ethics
- none of the presidential candidates have mentioned anything about the coercion and pressure to force people into the injection, neither recognize the bravery of those who stood up to the coercion and refused to bow to the pressure.
- Because the un-injected no longer matter to Sinkieland, why shouldn’t we at the least spoil the vote (just to keep our names on the election register in case we change our minds later)
Only TRE addresses these issues to this day, so they got my vote of putting money where my mouth is, with my last week’s earnings as donation.

IMHO, NEVER spoil your vote by not writing anything on the ballot paper. If you really decide to spoil your vote, then mark all the candidates or draw a huge X on the entire paper.
Like someone said, there is a possibility that someone/counting agents, etc etc etc may vote on your behalf.

The people should vote for TKL who will bring forth changes re the rightful roles of an EP!
It is not in his independent stance unlike TS & NKS who are contented to be a “figure head president,” & the people will continue to suffer under the pappy regime!
That’s why TKL is advocating a change to appointed president if there is no difference for the EP roles!

Stupidity at their best. Wayang or not we know, but most importantly it is not as if they are going to die tomorrow, they still have life to go on, so all they need to do is to choose the lesser devil. Make the best of situation, be adaptable, if they are not going to anything themselves, let’s other do it. So choose Tan Kin Lian , the lesser devil. Stop being stupid because that’s what PAP want lesser mortal to be.
