Landslide victory for Tharman Shanmugaratnam

Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a former senior minister of the People’s Action Party, has secured a resounding mandate to become Singapore’s ninth president.
The Election Department (ELD) unveiled the final election results, declaring Mr. Tharman the clear winner with an impressive 70.40% of the valid votes.
Out of the 2,480,760 votes cast, Mr Tharman garnered a total of 1,746,427 votes, solidifying his position as the new head of state.
Mr Tharman’s fellow contenders, Mr Ng Kok Song, the former GIC investment chief, received 15.72% (390,041 votes), while Mr Tan Kin Lian, the former NTUC Income chief, secured 13.88 % (344,292 votes).
The 66-year-old’s remarkable victory was announced by Returning Officer Tan Meng Dui, in the early hours of Saturday (2 Sept), around 12.22 a.m.

The results is not unexpected…
It is counter productive as unlikely we have the 3 Tans 65% of the votes as some predicted…
With the stong support of Opposition Leaders for Candidate like TKL…it is only natural that many including traditional opposition voters seek safe harbour with TS or NKS….which it happen…

Tharman was expected to win. There is no doubt about it. But winning such a big margin, it is a bit of a surprise.
So, what does this tell you? First and forth most, there is no racism. So will the race reserved president be scraped?! Also, will GRC be revoked?
Next, people still believe the PAP. So, will PAP be bolder? More FTAs and CECAs? Increase in COL and every other payment and fee?
Tharman mentioned several times about Ong TC. Will he be another OTC or Halimah?
Now we only wait and see what his “independent of mind” is all about!
Will the ownself check ownself culture continues, since the checker is from the same gang??!!

While I had expected Tharman to win, it is indeed a spectacle-dropping percentage as I would expect that with Dr Tan, Jee Say and many oppos leaders support, Kin Lian would not have lost by such a huge margin but he did.
A back of toilet paper calculation means the diehards’ oppo votes have shifted by almost 20%.
If this is reflective of what GE may bring, then the wayang party will have to return at least one GRC back to the party, and I would think it would be SengKang.

Far too early to say. A PE is not the GE after all. If we are simply going along percentages then our friend might as well call for the GE next month and be assured of 70% confirmed stamp chop liao.
GE has a lot more candidates taking part so a lot more to report and comment on too. Textbook Tan might not have gotten 30% of the votes but, hey, he didn’t lose his deposit this time!

Tharman landslide win is clearly the biggest wake up call showing Singaporeans are matured and colour blind. This election should have calm down anxieties of the minorities, if any, for it solidly shows we are Singapoeans – not Singaporean Chinese, Singaporean Malays, Singaporean Indians. Future policies formulation using arguments on minorities is a complete disconnect with Singaporeans and only lead to distrust of the policy makers.

Tharman’s extraordinary polling result have a message for us: The ground is VERY SWEET for an early GE.
While the next GE is due no later than 23 November 2025, sometime in 2024 could ended up being a likely possible year for the 14th GE of Singapore since independent.
As most had ‘predicted’ a high possibility of regional conflict in large scale in Asia between Apr~Dec 2024, any significant quick escalation of conflict or near conflict may/will trigger a GE in Singapore in 2024.
Ukraine-Russia war is a reminder of how things can escalate quickly and beyond reasonable doubt. Just as we should not underestimate stupidity in mankind and the willingness to trade freedom with peace and stability – which ironically hard for me to comprehend how freedom traded for peace and stability ultimately results in violently obtained peace.
The ground is VERY pineapple sweet with Tharman’s pineapple win, and traditionally any major crisis will win confidence votes from Singaporean to the PAP team. The last covid-GE is a good example and proven tactic.
Are you ready to give a strong mandate? A percentage vote more than 70% and return all parliamentary seats to the trusted brand since independent?
I think we do. I am growing sick of petty games from wayang parties making little progress. For a fresh feel, we should let PAP have 100% control of the parliament.
Constitutionally, more than 2/3 control is as good as 100%. Not to mention it was always in approximate control around 90% of parliament votes.

It is inevitable TS would win. President has 2 main roles as I see it.
1. Ceremonial Role – Was it evident TS able to articulate well in his appearance in main stream media. ONe of the candidate appears to speak haltingly and the other practically needs a script to read his speech. They may appear OK locally but on international stage, is it obvious to you who will better sell Singapore?
2. Looking after reserve – One candidate clearly claim his interest in looking after the welfare of the people. Understanding the reserve is testing his intellect to the limit. The other highlighted his experience in GIC – up to the 70s…. Relevant experience or completely outdated? Surely current GIC/Reserve’s profolio are far most complex and diversified. That left with, unforutnately, TS who probably is the best alternative being Finance Minister till recently.
So who fit the bill?

With 70 % in the bag, he will be Papsident until year 2035, i.e. 2 terms. Who dare to step into the ring when he seeks for a 2nd term. I predict if he seeks for 2nd term, he could be possibly a walkover. The ruling party would press him to seek for a 2nd term by then. So, he would be filfty rich to collect at least $24 millions for 12 years !!!
