Under the Westminster system, which we inherited from the British, powers are split among the Executive, the Legislative (Parliament) and the Judiciary.
In addition to the above-mentioned institutions the office of the Elected President is also bestowed with certain powers, however limited they may be.
These arrangements are put in place to bring into effect the need for checks and balances.
Singaporeans, however, have recently missed the opportunity to elect a head of state who is independent of the governing party.
But we must not take Mr. Tharman's election as an endorsement of the current ruling party for the obvious reason that Mr. Tharman has all along been more popular than the PAP itself.
In fact he is even more popular than the Prime Minister himself.
The proof of this is in the consistently higher percentage of votes garnered by the Jurong GRC anchored by Mr. Tharman compared to what the PM helmed Ang Mo Kio GRC has been getting.
In the last GE for example, Jurong GRC was won by the PAP with 74.6% of the valid votes compared to Ang Mo Kio GRC which garnered only 71.9%
The consistently overwhelming number of seats won by the PAP in every election since independence has given the party near absolute control of power over two of the above-mentioned three institutions.
And since the appointments of members of the judiciary are largely also recommended by the Prime Minister, the power controlled by the governing party is immense indeed. The election of an ex Senior minister closely linked to the ruling party and the formulation of policies have made matters worse.
Singaporeans can expect little or no change to policies that Singaporeans are not happy with and have been complaining about.
These include the high cost of living, spiralling cost of rentals and of residential and commercial properties, especially HDB flats.
As expected fees are now being raised by various state controlled entities, with more in the pipeline. The additional 1% increase in GST is coming soon.
Singaporeans are now left with one only more opportunity to bring about change in the way the country is being administered.
Yes, I am referring to the GE wherein the lop-sided numbers in parliament can be made more favourable to the opposition, for checks and balances.
This matters a lot as far as accountability in concerned.
However we must not be too ambitious. Denying the PAP a two thirds majority, which we have been wanting to achieve all along, will be a good start for reform.
Let's do it Singapore! It's long overdue.

Always remember that the ang moh system has no GRC hor. It serve the clowns very well until 2011. These days it’s easier than ever for them to lose their fabled “GRC fortress” minister or not. Just go ask George Yeo loh.
And with the transport fare hike in December (more coming after the next GE don’t you worry!) AND the GST going up another 1% the month after you can continue to get by with your meagre salary. Hands up the number of people who had a $50 increase in the last 2 years?

Face it, the nation is already in ruin because of PAP policies, especially foreign policies. The Westminster system has given rise to a devil in the system or a wolve in sheep’s clothing(incorruptible by his law who is law of sin himself). He even ruined his motherland when he exported his doctrines into their land. Still, everybody(most) worshipped(adore and loved) the devil. Least to say, everybody were fooled or deceived MAINLY because of their lusts. He merely exploited what everybody wants(lusts) through the democratic system(cause of failure). He created policies in the guise of “equal rights” to be rich to unite the people. And who doesnt want to be rich right?

It is surprising that none of the Opposition parties have asked for the GRC system to be removed in Parliament after TS’s win as President. So the WP,PSP and SDP may be ready to take over a couple more GRCs. Only Red Dot is asking for a removal of the GRC. The PAP have used this system to parachute in their candidates and may now face the loss of constituencies because of the same system as they do not now have strong Ministrial candidates to spread over the island. However as the EP has shown the PAP have many tricks to win so it is best to help the Opposition to ensure that they do not lose their deposits.

I agree. SDP has been very consistent in its approach and has not seen any coup d’etat in its leadership like the Wayang Party. Although Dr Tan has since lost his appeal, I can see the dedication in the PSP in Leong Mun Wai and Hazel (spelling?).
So instead of sticking to the Wayang Party, which is only content with being a co-driver, maybe it is time to support the SDP and PSP into the clubhouse.
With the exception of Jamus, I really don’t see anyone else in the WP worth mentioning. Sylvia has been a co-driver all along, she can stick to playing football while both Pritam and Faiseh will be taken care of prior to the GE.
