Roti Prata
When the GST was at 7%, plain prata with curry, a poor man's favourite at hawker centres, cost $1.20 per piece. After the GST was raised by 1% to total 8% the price per piece was raised to $1.50.
Early next year GST will go up by another 1%. How much will a piece of prata cost?
Don't ever underestimate the power of 1% - on what it can do to our cost of living.

At this rate, good luck for those thinking of retiring in comfort. Was talking to colleagues of mine about how much they will need to retire. I asked if they have S$1m in their bank accounts now, can they retire? I was surprised they thought deeply and replied negative. Many of them have children who are still schooling with monthly bills, loans and other expenses.
20 years ago, if anyone has a million bucks in their bank account, many would have opted to quit their jobs. So if you work another 10 years, do you think you can earn $1m? Even if you can get $1m after 20 years starting today so what. By then the cost of a roti prata could be $3 or $4….$1m will be sip sip water let alone enough for retirement.

I have been missing Prata for years now, even when I am in HK, I cannot seems to get a stall that taste as good or same as local, especially the curry.
I am now able to get chilled Prata in China, but am still trying to emulate the (fish) curry that taste so good in Sinkiland.
Does anyone have the recipe for the local fish curry? Also, how about the chili used for local Hainanese chicken rice? Those I import from HK also don’t taste local or even nice.
Anyone please?

In my youth in the late 60’s one prata was 10 cents. With egg 20 cents. Even if you had a low-paying job you could enjoy two or even three. The mamas who made these were experts – better than any restaurant. Only a very few will remember Waterloo Street or Esplanade hawker stalls. Nowadays you get half cooked dough from idiots who can’t cook and if you get diarrhea good luck.
In a few years a regular worker will have to decide to buy a flat and starve or live with parents and have something to eat (maybe). The Swiss Standard of living expenses has been achieved.

Dear Jufrie and Opposition,
Why ran away from my simple question here:
https://www.tremeritus.net/2023/09/25/one-other-opportunity-to-bring-about-change/
Please answer it.
Opposition cannot even answer my simple question, so don’t expect Opposition to solve your problem.
We urge all sound minded to ask Opposition the same simple question as mine.
They will run away …

@SINGAROAR
In China, users and the merchants are NOT charged a single cent for payment or receipt when they use Alipay and Tencent, charges applies to only withdrawals after a certain basic minimum sum of RMB $5000 per month is reached. The rates applied are dirt cheap, certainly not 2.5%.
A point to note, Tencent (WeiXin) recently tried to charge a 1% (I think) rate for all schools’s receipt, the various educational institutions started to boycot using WeiXin for payment and switched to Alipay. The various education department (city level) started to cry father cry mother until Tencent buay tahan, subsequently dropped the idea.
PLAINLY PUT: As long as the funds remains in Alipay or Weixin, there are NO charges for recepit or payment.

Thew prices for hawker centers are set by the government ministry not by the hawker i.e. they can sell for higher price but not lower. Whatever they earn the majority is to pay back the lease. They are lucky to make anything at all nowadays. That is why there is a high turnover of tenants.
Every new ‘entrepreneur’ thinks he is clever in this business until reality hits him and then he joins the bankrupt and closes the business. There is an endless supply of such tenants – so the Regime never loses. This is a cash cow that will always work, 10 cents or $10.

Can understand your cravings.
Me stopped eating prata for some time too.
Recently had some at a place called Prata Wala. Was good.
When you come back for visits, you can go to CHINATOWN POINT,quite convenient by MRT.
Other good prata stalls at Sembawang “circus” area.Old time.
Famous one at Jalan Kayu.
But like some say here, manifold$ more expensive.
When I was a teenager,i paid 10 cents for kosong.Used to down 3-4 pieces with lots of curries.
Remember,there was “apong” too?
These days,hard to come by.
EVERYTHING IN $IN CITY has become $INFULLY EXPEN$IVE.
BLAME SUPPLY CHAIN,BLAME WEATHER,BLAME GOD BUT THE REAL CULPRIT IS GREED!
Anyway, hope you will be back sometime to catch up with food and some remaining nostalgic places.
Take good care there,bro.

Only a small segment of the people in Sinkiland eat roti prata on a frequent basis.
It is not a staple food.
Thus its selling price is not at all an indication of the cost of living in Sinkiland.

I think your many posts on how Xi runs China, shows that the Chinese government protects it’s citizens from unscrupulous Corporate gains. The govt. has remained the regulator. In Singapore the govt. is the owner of the corporates and remains the regulator. So there is no protection for the population from govt. agencies. This is the contradiction in Singapore. The govt. does not represent the interests of the people but itself. In China, it is the Opposite.

Insurance coverage on bank deposits will be raised to $100,000 per depositor from $75,000 currently, The move will take effect from April 1, 2024.
This will ensure 91 per cent of depositors are fully covered under MAS’ Deposit Insurance (DI) Scheme, which is administered by the Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation (SDIC). https://www.straitstimes.com/business/insurance-coverage-on-s-pore-dollar-bank-deposits-to-rise-from-75000-to-100000-from-april-2024
If one reads between the lines above, 9% has more than $100,000 in their bank A/Cs while 91% has less than $100,000 and just my guess; a large swathes of population may have a couple of thousands/hundreds only. Sometime a bit kaypoh; take a peek at receipts left at the ATMs and haven’t seen amount more than a couple of hundred dollars. Could I be mistaken?
BTW: If you game for ‘crispy prata’ there’s one Located in: Ubi 350 Coffee Shop
Address: 350 Ubi Ave 1, (Before Covid prices; now not sure) Plain Prata ($0.80 each, minimum 2 pieces) Egg Prata ($1.30 each) SUPER CRISPY pratas for those who like the ‘crunches’ and with deliciously blended fish curry (think TRE Tech salivating now)
Opening Hours: 6am to 6:30pm daily, closed on Monday

1% GST plus 18% Water hike, Prata will become $1.50 for kosong liao lor.
“Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, has announced a notable 18% hike in water prices over the next two years, in light of rising production and supply costs since 2017.
This price augmentation translates to an added 50 cents per cubic metre, divided over two increments: 20 cents in 2024 and 30 cents in 2025.”
The lightning supporters must be so thrilled and looking forward to it. lol

Bythe time, the second round of GST increase, a single plain roti prata would have increased to $2.00 and the curry for the prata may cost an additional 20 cents to 50 cents more !!! So, to eat or not to eat ?

@”Sometime a bit kaypoh; take a peek at receipts left at the ATMs and haven’t seen amount more than a couple of hundred dollars. Could I be mistaken?”
Response: maybe savings a/cs less than hundreds but fixed a/cs more than hundred thousands.
Just wondering why there is a local bank’s fixed deposit interest rates was calculated based on each placement previously but later changed to based on total placements, yet the board rates for smaller amounts is higher than bigger amounts? Isn’t this discouraging people to deposit large amount?
loading...
But those with fixed a/cs greater than $100,000 still fall into the 9% category which means the rest 91% still have less.
Why I question this is based on the reports:
2 in 3 working Singaporeans do not have savings to last them beyond 6 months:
https://www.straitstimes.com/business/banking/2-in-3-working-singaporeans-do-not-have-savings-to-last-them-beyond-6-months-ocbc#:~:text=An%20OCBC%20survey%20conducted%20last,last%20them%20beyond%20six%20months.
Close to half of Singaporeans don’t have enough savings to tide through an emergency:
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/close-to-half-of-singaporeans-dont-have-enough-savings-to-tide-through-an-emergency-survey#:~:text=BRANDED%20CONTENT-,Close%20to%20half%20of%20Singaporeans%20don't%20have%20enough%20savings,tide%20through%20an%20emergency%3A%20Survey
As far as I know present Board rates, individual/overall placements rates, still no change in their policies. Also there are different types of structured products offered by different banks. Your return is calculated according to a formula set out in the structured deposit’s terms and conditions based on the performance of an underlying financial asset, product or benchmark. These may include market indices, shares, interest rates, bonds or other fixed-income securities, foreign exchange rates, or a combination of these.
