Defending LTA or MOT for doing a lousy job on SimplyGo card

I applaud Chee Hong Tat for despite having to eat humble pie, unlike many others, he didn't try to defend LTA or MOT for doing a lousy job about the SimplyGo card or snake away but instead extended his courageous apology to the commuting public for the much anxiety and inconveniences that the SimplyGo card inconvenience has caused to many of them.

Although the SimplyGo card is a newer card with newer features when compared to the EZ link and Netsflash pay card and while the EZ link and Netsflash pay card will cost a further S$40 million to continue with its usage, it is very, very clear to me that the people behind the SimplyGo card's design and implementation are only book-smart and totally failed to empathise and to understand the psyche of the commuters who use them.

Most public transport commuters are not wealthy people or people who earn high income.

Cents and a couple of dollars matter to them and they do not want to top up their cards with hundreds of dollars each time and can then use it uninterrupted for an extended period of time before topping it up again.

I even suspect that the people who are behind the SimplyGo card design and implementation are one, fairly high income earners and two, people who do not take public transport on a daily basis and hence their lack of basic knowledge, empathy and understanding such as the habit, comfort and importance of viewing the trip fare and card balance are glaringly ignored and/or overlooked.

This whole episode is symptomatic of the pap government who governs at the high level and earn fat, fat salaries for themselves and often times devoid of the true understanding of the real living or more accurately the struggles of the common people at the grassroot level.

Think.

  • Systemic problem:

The case shows the systemic problem in Singapore.

A transport card goes all way up to the minister for a decision. We never hear of that in other countries. What are the civil servants for? Do they clean the office and serve tea?

They also do not test the system out as well. LTA said they had don’t know what focus group. How many people actually tested out the card? And not even one person noticed that the remaining card value wasn’t displayed ah you sure or not? How the hell was testing even done or was it just pc simulations like playing videogame like that?

This is strike 2 for LTA after the service 167 debacle. Let’s see when strike 3 will be. LTA is symtomatic of government agencies these days, look at data and then make decisions. They said for service 167 they asked the community leaders before making the decision to withdraw the service. Who are these community leaders? How many? Do these people take 167 regularly? Why weren’t 167 commuters surveyed at all?

Same goes for idiot HDB. Remember the AMK SERS debacle not so long ago? They simply assumed these people had 100k or more in their CPF to pay for a replacement flat!

  • MillionDollar:

We have the following questions for the parliament and Minister of Transport:

    1. How much was invested/spend on ‘Simply Go’ system platform, so far?

    2. How long the ‘Simply Go’ platform is contracted or planned for before the next sunset of ‘Simply Go’?

    3. How much ‘Simply Go’ cost to maintain its system and hardware yearly?

    4. Why existing contactless platform of EZ was not incorporated as ‘Critical Performance Variables’ of ‘Simply Go’ platform?

    5. Where can the public inspect ‘Simply Go’ yearly financial statements?

In many countries, the state incorporated companies are NOT exempt from public disclosure of its financial statements for public scrutiny. When Public listed companies need to publish quarterly results, it is ridiculous to know that companies incorporated by the states using public funds are any lesser in disclosure in terms of financial spending.

Was it because there are NO member of parliament pushing for such legislation?
Because over 90% members of the parliament come from the same political party and expected to toll the line regardless of any moral obligations?

A constant lags in Simply Go apps to update fare trip information, and constant fare deduction errors make us think that Simply Go is a highly unreliable system which LTA had ‘invested’ in.

In 2019, pre-covid era, an average of about 7.691 million passengers rides a day used public transport in Singapore. In 2022, an average of 6.39 million passengers rides a day used public transport in Singapore.

If we assume a very low rate error in deduction of 0.5%, it will be 38,455 and 31,950 cases everyday! And if each trip wrongfully deduct 10c to 50c, the total amount of error deduction will be somewhere between $3,195 to $19,227 everyday.

Annually, the amount of wrongful deduction can be around $1million to $7million.

Can someone in the parliament address this matter and ask the Minister to give honest answers to those questions?

He is doing what the Regime are good at – throwing others under the bus to save his own ass.

How many believe this was just an LTA issue and not endorsed or started by him and his goondus? When the plan fell flat on its face it is always good to find a scapegoat. A lot of the bullshit is started by these clowns but then when it cannot work others are responsible. LTA is not totally stupid – they will not do something like this unless they were told to do it.

Yes, not knowing how much you are actually spending on public transport per trip with just a quick glance is touted as a new feature.

A new feature that LTA and PAP originally intended for paying commuters to mindlessly accept until the public backlash occurred.

This is not unexpected. Hoping to cushion the impact of future fare hikes?

The issue of errors and mis-charges or over charges, it requires individuals’ time to go over and inspect your fare charges.

Sometimes it just doesn’t make ‘sense’ to experience the hassle to claim few dollars or cents. But the accumulated sum is no small amount when the frequencies increases.

    https://gutzy.asia/2024/01/26/user-shares-experience-of-overcharges-on-simplygo-due-to-missed-entries/

If the overcharged situations is 3 times in a month for $2, and a person made 4 trips a day, 120 trips a month (30-days), the over-charging rate is 2.5%.

Putting the above figure into DAILY 7.691 million (2019) passengers rides & 6.39 million (2022) passengers rides, daily overcharged cases are 192,275 & 159,750 respectively. If each over-charges is $2 going unnoticed, the over charges amount to $116 million to $140 million annually.

    Do note that :
    1. SBS Transit turns in full-year revenue of $1.5 billion in 2022.
    2. SMRT full-year revenue of $645.5 million in 2022.
    3. Tower Transit SG – unknown revenue
    4. Go-ahead SG – unknown revenue

Besides over-charging and/or error charging issues, the problem of Frequently Expiring usable cards is also a concern. Technically, values in those expired cards are being ‘confiscated’ for those who are not using those transport cards for sometimes.

The issues for SG commuters are much larger than we can imagine.
