Shou Chew made a good point when he pointed out that the hearing seemed rooted in Xenophobia. (To me) it is based purely on jingoistic sinophobia, boosted by gigantic lobbying efforts ($$$) from Tik Tok’s competition eating their lunch, and not on any real literacy of the issues at hand. There was no true attempt at dialog or information gathering; it was all grandstanding and done so rudely. Not a single member of congress on the embarrassing committee presented evidence that Tik Tok is unique among social media companies in its danger to US democracy.

Whatever restrictions are placed on TikTok should be placed on all platforms that sell their *eyeballs* to the highest bidder, and they should stop pretending this is a special danger because China is involved. If that’s the case, THEY should ALL turn in their phones, microchips, and all the rest of the vast quantities of goods imported from CHINA.

Until it is explained otherwise, this is about Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk losing market share, and little else. This is not really about China even though the media wants you to believe that. It’s really about Facebook aka META and Google executives lobbying Congress to ban TikTok because they feel threatened in this new era of eroding advertising revenue for their massive companies.

As I read all the comments in this thread, I couldn’t help sensing some deep nationalism and ethnicitism among certain sector of Singaporean. Perfectly normal for a relatively young nation which have deep sense of inferiority complex and lacks cultural depth.

How many of you really gone through watching the whole hearing?
