China’s ‘wacky’ dance breaks barriers, unites the world

Author: A wacky dance from a wedding in Guangxi, China, has gone global, with billions of people across the world learning it. The curious thing is that both the dance steps and the music have a strong rural Chinese flavor, yet are still enjoyed planet-wide, from Asia to Europe to Africa to North America. The dance is called Kemusan (科目三), meaning "Subject Three".

Guangxi residents interviewed say the dance originated from a learner driver who did the dance after passing the third subject of the driving test.
In China, there are 4 sbjects to pass before a driver's license can be issued, 2 theory and 2 practical. 科目三refers to the 3rd test, a practical on-the-road test.
Interesting to note, the entire test is mostly computer-monitored and the tester is not allowed to say or do anything to/for the student. Any such act will result in an immediate fail. The passing mark for the test is minimum 80 out of 100.

Honestly, dance is really not bad but 也没有那么劲. Its like China short videos 短视频. Cannot last more than a minute. Once over a minute, very boring. The Best move are concentrated in the first 20 to 40 seconds. After that 就没有了. Particularly i like the move which reminds me of ultraman or 蒙面超人变身!
If you watch those breakdance, hip hop, ballroom dance e.g. Samba, latino, tango,….All can last beyond a minute and you dont get bored.

Like I said before, China is huge and has 1.6 billion people, grab anyone off the street and he/she may be a talent.
Besides, the talent market in China is not saturated and ripe, so it is easier to “出头”, aided by their WeChat and DouYin.
Let me give you an idea of how it is so veyr easy to get eyeballs in China. Lets say one day I go crazy and carry a sign with TR Emeritus URL on it and do a crazy dance at an open area in the city (not illegal) and get someone to share on WeChat and DuYin, in less than one day, TRE’s server would be bombarded with so much traffic that we won’t be able to stay online for long. That’s China for you.

Allow me to fill you in on how the dance went viral.
It all started at a wedding, the creator is a close friend of the groom. Like most Chinese weddings, they put on show and they choose to do the dance (in the video). It thenwent crazy viral in Guangxi and slowly it started spreading, thanks to WeChat and Douyin.
Then some high-level management of 海底捞 saw this and implemented in its stall and it aided the spreading, and since 海底捞 has businesses in other countries, it was exported to these countries via its stalls, so it can be said that 海底捞 aided the spread along with DouYin (reported on TikTok) and the rest is history.
As always in China, the original creator of the dance was a conventional farmer that makes very little, now he is one of the most sough-after poster boy by many huge brands and companies, making 7 figures or more in a year.
That’s China for you.
P/S: BTW, 2 of the big bosses of 海底捞 is now Sinkiporan PR, last I heard.

Caviar yes i m aware. But theres different categories and quality. China they mass produce. I cannot remember only few type of fishes can produce Caviar.

The 5 minute dance from the originator i have watched before. I still maintained After one minute the remaining move are basically breakdance. No more originality and dont really match the song. Choosing the right song also contributed to its popularity.
科目三 overall movement reminds me of 提线木偶. But regardless the first 1 minute 是很不错 or thumb up. Undoubtly created a popular trend 流行 or 潮流.
