The writer is correct in that success is not dependent on a degree (assuming success means monetary success primarily). That depends on how good you are at making money, so he is stating the obvious. But there is a value to higher education in producing thinking and responsible adults/citizens that goes beyond monetary quantification... 

I am happy to note that potential People's Action Party candidates are carefully selected, trained and positioned at the grassroots level as early as possible ("Potential PAP candidates 'already on the ground'"; Monday). It is not easy being an MP these days as it has become "fashionable" for people to disagree with the Government,...
