Does the lack of national flags at HDB estates serve as a litmus test as to PAP government’s performance?

Today, we will celebrate our 53th National Day Parade at the floating platform. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely wish all my fellow Singaporeans a very Happy National Day.

Over the last two days, I drove around Singapore to observe the displaying of our national flags by HDB residents from their units. The results were so pathetic when compared with past years’.

Life in Singapore under the PAP government is tough for so many of our citizens and despite the huge and impressive façade and display that is being put up at the floating platform, this pathetic displaying of our national flags by our citizens is the real litmus test, and lest PAP government forgets, our citizens’ well-being is what really matters.

It must be substance over style. I don’t need any PAP ministers or PAP scholars or PAP generals to “smoke” me about the answer.

Looking back when we were ejected from Malaysia against our wish in 1965, our future was so very bleak when the sky fell on us. The odds were stacked so high against us that nobody even gave us any chance of survival. But we did not beat our chest.

Back then, our hugely uneducated and poor citizens pulled together with our old guard ministers and soldiered on. The rest is history. Today, we are enjoying the breeze under the big Singapore tree that they had together planted.

Looking forward, for our children to also have the chance to enjoy the breeze that the trees we together plant today, the decisions and efforts that we make today are crucial.

As a citizen, I do not know Lee Hsien Loong personally and I have nothing personal against him, but I am very disappointed with a number of decisions and performance of his government.

Although he belongs in the same political party that his father and others jointly founded, he and his cabinet colleagues today do not possess the same level of calibre, political instincts, political empathy and political acumen that the pioneer generation PAP leaders.

These are the people whose leadership lifted a generation of people whom my grandparents belonged to. They lifted us from third world to first and made us a proud and confident people, ready to face and take on the world.

For that, I am eternally grateful. Anyway, the lack of flags are citizen’s silent way of protest and I am much sadden by it.

I hope that the PAP government is honest enough with itself, humble enough and willing to do some introspective post-mortem to understand better the real mood, frustrations, disappointments and even anger of our people vs their many price increases in recent time, lack of proper accountability and deteriorating governing standards etc under the Lee Hsien Loong administration government.

Happy National Day to all.

Simon, you are referring to an ERA I lived through, where neighbours were considered friends and even family with doors wide open seldom closed especially in the new satellite town of Queenstown built in honour of Queen Elizabeth II Coronation in 1953…In 1959 when self Govt was granted we were still living a blissful school life until the GREAT FIRE broke out in 1961 in Bukit Ho Swee and things began to DIFFER…

How different is left to the Old Timers to reflect, for me it was the BEGINNING of the END of an era where we were all Colour Blind and Neighbours were family…

Admittedly it was still good in a way when the Old Guards were from the ground and NOT from the Hypocritical self-acclaimed Aristocrats and Elites that LKY wanted to Create NOT for the people but for his Dynasty…After 1985 and the Horrible PURGE of the 60s with a NO CHOICE entry into Malaysia of the Old Guards the falsely accused Commies in Barisan or the too young to Retire BRAINS of the PAP…The Bastard filled the Cabinet with HIS idea of a new generation of Idiotic Yes Men…And…the rest is HISTORY as written by an evil man who DESTROYED 2million UNBORN through his EVIL LEEgal Abortion act now REPLACED by 40% of the Population TODAY through Planes-Rail-Road & Sea BUT not the WOMB of the Core Singaporeans that gave EVERYTHING and ANYTHING in BELIEVING a Bastard now DEAD!!!

Don’t think SinKaporean, esp the 70% and the newly minted citizen, care much about the display of our National Flag. They care more about the value of their prized possession(hdb flat, EC, condo and private properties). SOme joker even use the flag to clean the floor. For MOST of the 30% they care about working even on Sunday and PH to earn enough to put foods on the table for family members! And for the PAPigs and Gang, they care more about fattening their bank accounts and increase in their obscene $millions salaries which EMS(Extra Senile Minister)Woody Goh has recently complained that their current PAY IS NOT ENOUGH!

Very childish and naive article. We don’t need to display the flag to acknowledge our patriotism and what the govt has done for the country. Singapore has come a long way and in most aspects of quality of living, we are close to the top. Just like during election PAP rally don’t have many people but we ultimately put our faith in them.

Bluntly, are you not on tow without mind in balance. As you always tell only one side of your views repeatedly blighting your fellow Singaporeans. That is utterly disgraceful or not you tell us. If not, aren’t you not kind of childish too.

And it is lopsided sided minds like yours without quality views and ideal that habour only your personal ideals that tell us a tale about your miniscule mindset.

“…in most aspects of quality of living, we are close to the top” is a deceptive remark. Relative to whom? If we’re to say with African countries, I would agree – S’pore is about par with South Africa cities like Cape Town, Durban, & Johannesburg. Against top tier cities like NYC, London, Tokyo, Paris, Milan – I’ll say “Nah!!” S’pore has an inequitable economy of a narrow base of rich elites, a layer of political aristocrats & plenty of impoverished masses. They are either in the category of debt serfs (working to pay off debts) or wages slaves (the elderly & borderline poor working to feed & house themselves). The misery index is off the charts, while the stress index is unbearable. The SEALs motto, Leave No One Behind, doesn’t operate in S’pore. When a society starts leaving their citizens behind, societal cohesion falls apart & people starts to question the political commitment about a fair & equal society. The PAP have dug themselves a grave which they can’t extricate themselves.

Oh we dun put up flags for a long time already.
Anyway we are always out of country to enjoy the long weekend ahead, has been away every National day since LHL took over.
The National day songs are so embarrassing, all those marching and SAF air displays so repetitive and boring, we prefer to go away to enjoy ourselves.
So queasy to watch the parade that our hairs stand up on our arms and legs. Better no see and no hear.

The reason is simple. There is no need to continue with fake displays of national pride. The battle has already been won.

The government has full control of the voting system, the presidency and civil service. There are sufficient FT converts to stave off any threat to the current one-party system.

Therefore the money for all this can be put more productively into the pappy pockets.

Why waste it when it has no further use?

If Dr da Cunha had looked at the composition of the PAP team in the late 50s and 60s and the physical structure of Singapore back then he would have had a heart attack. Dr Cunha was either not born yet or just a baby then.

“he and his cabinet colleagues today do not possess the same level of calibre, political instincts, political empathy and political acumen that the pioneer generation PAP leaders.”

Of course the good for nothing PM can’t hold a candle to his dad. By the time he entered politics there were quite a number of HDB flats already built and the CBD was already bustling with office buildings. And let us not forget that his dad was in charge until 1990 when he took a back seat after that. The foundations had already been built and life was significantly better than 1959.

And you compare it to 1959 when there were hardly any flats and the CBD had not even a skyscraper. There was no MRT and the foundations for the country weren’t laid yet.

So for the third PM to say he empathises with the common people is pure hogwash. He was a little boy when his dad was doing all the work and by the time he was PM in 2004 the country was a far cry from back in 1959.

And the even funnier thing that no one realises is that the PM is from a RICH family. At the time when our grandparents and parents lived in kampungs and struggled to feed a large family good old goondu Loong was living in a nice house with a car and an ah ma or two waiting for him hand and foot.

We all know he never lived in a kampung or only eating porridge with tau geh. Or eating meat on occasion. He was well fed and didn’t have to struggle on a daily basis unlike the vast majority.

As for the hanging of flags, it has been like this for the better part of a decade. My family hasn’t flown the flag for years too.

  • Change We Must:

The display of Singapore flag is our indicator of happiness and love of our country. So every year during this time we would know how the citizens feel and fair.
PAP ministers and MPs have to start to learn how to communicate to the people politely without any air. Remember! you are there not because you are talented or Singapore cannot survive without you, it is the people who put you there thinking you know how to serve them. Don’t boss around when you talk to us. You alone won’t know the best, the best can only comes from all of us. We have more brain than you all MPs added together.

  • Hang Flag has no bearings:

But it has always been like this.
    Few hang flags.

Does it mean less support for Papaya? Hanging flag has no link to the level of support. We do not know the true reasons. It could be the people are plain lazy. Too stressed by job and too tired. singlians may not be flag hanging fans or enthusiasts, but they are die hard fans of the papaya. How can you doubt the counting was honest and accurate? Wayang putty witnessed it leh. They are not actors or co-conspirers?

    Historical evidence says no.
Every GE few hang the flag out of own initiative.
Yet, every GE , they won.
