The Stars of Our Flag

I give a National Education of Singapore to my daughter as National Day approaches. And it started with our Singapore Flag and the history of Singapore’s Independence. The standard explanation of what our Flag stands for.

The Flag of Singapore consists of two horizontal halves, red above white. Red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man; white stands for pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. In the upper left corner, a white crescent moon and five white stars form a circle. The five stars stand for the ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

She said to me, among the Five Stars of our Flag, we have only achieved two stars. Peace and Progress. I have to agree with her somewhat.

There is no Democracy when we are filled with Cronyism and conflicts of interests while Separation of Powers is basically lacking, not to mention the dominance of PAP’s suppression of free press and freedom of expression.

There is no justice and fairness when our electoral process is rigged by constant gerrymandering and pork barrel politicking.

As the most important value of our Nation building, Equality, has been belittled by PAP itself as some highfalutin idea outright!

Singapore was ‘forced’ into Independence because the Federal government of Malaysia didn’t want Equality to all races, as in Malaysian Malaysia. We were treated unequally by the Federal Government in terms of taxation and allocation of funds. Thus, we decided to become Independent.

It is painfully ironic that after a few decades, PAP turns around and derides the importance of a Equality as highfalutin ideas, ignoring the very fact that our Nation was born out of the up-righteous morals in upholding Equality for all, regardless of race, language or religion!

I told my daughter, other places in the world may be filled with all sorts of discriminations against people with different races, language or religion, but Singapore is the only home that we can depend and defend such values in real workings. Do not let others to tell you otherwise that these are just some highfalutin ideals.

Mr Goh let me put certain things RIGHT…We NEVER decided to be INDEPENDENT same as we NEVER had a CHOICE of REFUSAL to MERGE…

BOTH were thrust upon us by an Evil man NOW DEAD!!!

After being BOOTED out of Malaysia…The Evil made a statement Literally and NOT as a Metaphor “We will trade with the DEVIL to survive” the same way he will sell his country and people to create a Dynasty from the Japanese Occupation till TODAY followed through by his useless son.

We all know the crescent and white background is on all the Islamic flags and the five stars and red background on the China flag.

There is no real flag for $G just a composite imitation of other flags to keep the powerful nations that the government is scared of happy.

All the other BS is thought up to justify the end result. The question is how long more will we have to lie about it.

  • Selfish Sinkie Syndrome:

The truth of the matter is that Lee Con You made a big blunder by taking his little red dot island independent 53 years ago.

Back then, the Malaysian Tunku saw through the character of the young Lee, and realized that keeping him in the union is going to be a very bad idea.
Lee Con You was like the Monkey King in Chinese mythology, full of crafty tricks and always up to all sorts of mischief.

Actually, the Malaysian Tunku then was really a wise sage who gave the Monkey King an impossible nut to crack (just to keep him occupied ;-)
Imagine making a decision to split Malaya peninsula then. It must have been a difficult decision, but nevertheless, the Malaysian Tunku sage knew this crafty Monkey CANNOT be TAMED at all; so he gave the young Lee an ultimatum, to take a small island and get out.

You might think it was a mistake by the Malaysians, but really over the long arc of history, 50 years is just short-term. Such a tiny island really got low chances of surviving for long as an independent country.

Yes you may expand very quickly given the small size of your economy and you can urbanize very efficiently since the land area is so tiny, but eventually, the physical limits to longer-term growth catches up to you equally fast.

Thats why you see Spore grow so rapidly and reach her peak within one generation only. However, this also implies that Spore is at her apex and is now going downhill equally fast. Every Sporean can witness this for themselves.

As the saying goes: You live fast but you tend to die young.
It is like a young man who drink hard, party hard, live fast, make money faster…but in the end he will die young with only a short lifespan.

That is also why you see a host of economic/social/political issues now surfacing in very quick succession, from Oxley feud, to MRT breakdowns, fracture of social compact, to economic fatigue etc. The ruling party has run out of ideas too, and hence they import foreigners to artificially boost GDP; but all these stop-gap measures will ultimately fail, simply because a tiny island does not have the prerequisite of enduring as a country.

In comparison, Malaysia may not grow as fast, but you can be sure she has a much longer lifespan. Look at Malaysians with all their corruption and inefficiencies and yet after so many decades, their people somehow still can survive. I know a Malaysian guy with family of 5 kids and the main breadwinner is doing odd-jobs, but they still can afford an old car and survive because he can grow his own bananas and papayas and his monthly utilities bill is less than 100 RM. Big countries got land to sustain, but tiny island has nothing to stop the collapse, once it starts.

  • Partial truth?:

@ his monthly utilities bill is less than 100 RM.

Did he tell you he undertable the technician or meter man to ” modify ” his electricity meter so that even with aircon 24 7 , his bill is less than 100. In the end the country in debt.

Since you like Malaysia so much. Migration is good option.

If you don’t know the facts, then don’t open your mouth to make spurious statements that he “modify” his electric meter etc.

Go ask your Malaysian PR friends here how much is their bill from Tenaga Nasional (their equivalent of our PUB), before you talk further. Their one-time utilities setup charge is about RM20 only, with deposit of about RM100 to RM200 depending on type of residence. No GST and still has a subsidy deduction on electricity usage given by the state government.

How much is your PUB/SPower deposits and surchages like water tax etc.? I’ll bet you don’t even know because you trust your Pee Ah Pee so much you never bothered to read what you have been billed. Ha!

Malaysia may be in debt, but so is America, Japan and most European countries too! So debt is not the be all and end all of your argument.
You think Singapore is not in serious debt too?

Pee Ah Pee is very good in hiding things especially our national reserve amounts lah. May I ask you whether your Indian President has the keys and know how much is the Reserve now? If not, what makes you think we are also not in heavy debt? You believe what that Ah Loong tells you?

As for migration, I don’t mind retiring in Malaysia since its just a few hrs drive away. I like the food there and I can still drive back for the better medical facilities here. Anyhow, my point is to compare and contrast to see where Singapore has gone wrong, but everytime Pappies lose the argument, they often revert to “if you don’t like, migrate lah” nonsense.

You got no good reasoning except “to migrate lah!”. Why don’t you debate with me on why I think tiny island nations won’t survive long?
I have thought deeply on this and searched the history of small nations, so feel free to challenge me on worthwhile discussions, instead of just saying stupid things like “migrate lah”. I can migrate if I want to…can you? Ha!

My children can and should migrate, but me no need lah… I already served NS I’m going to stay here to VTO and see the faces of Pee Ah Pee on TV when they face their “Najib-moment”. hehehe

Singaporeans don’t look down on Malaysia so much. A country’s fortunes are like business cycles too. When and if Malaysia booms economically, the tables may be turned on you.

Since u have the “facts” , juz put it online here photos or attachments of the different malaysia bills .
You can black out the names or IC.

This way more convincing for the 70% let alone 30%. Not all 30% agree with you .

Anyway that’s what a close malaysia colleague feedback. Modification of meters … Its no secret.

Migration … Exactly my point. If vto fails again. Then plan b or c.

Tu lan so what . Ranting , whinning, grumbling serve what purpose.

  • Selfish Sinkie Syndrome:

@Partial truth?, you don’t talk c*rk here….this forum does not allow you to attach photos. Anyway, you think you are big shot here? I suppose to do the leg work for you?

I already said very clearly on deposit and his average utility bill amounts, so if you doubt my data, then it is YOUR JOB now to go and verify my statements (with you Malaysian friends/PRs etc.).
If you want, you show me your side of the data/photos to try to disproof my statements lah.

Any others reading this who are familiar with Malaysian utility bills or have data is also free to add their comments to either support my statements or deny them.

Besides, modification of meters happens in Singapore too…
    https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/paradise-group-accused-of-tampering-with-meters-using-640k-of-fuel

So does that imply anything? I’m talking about overall utility costs in Malaysia to compare and contrast with local utility billings, but then you bring up spurious case of modification of meters. Then, I can also ask you why don’t you SHOW PHOTO to proof your case of modification of meter in Malaysia? Ha! You also cannot proof right?

On migration, whats exactly your point? You made no point at all and you avoided answering to my main tpoic for a debate on my key tenet that tiny island nations may not last very long. Instead, you went off into pointless foray into minor point on utility meters.

I already said I can migrate if I want to…but I want to see the day they face their “Najib-moment”. I also said I can migrate if I want to….but can you honestly do the same? (You avoided my line of discussion when you know you lost). I also said earlier, you can challenge me to debate on MAIN discussion point, which is why I think small island nation don’t last long, but you don’t dare to, and try to nit-pick on minor utility topic. What a loser. Ha!

Yes, even if I tulan so what?….I like to tulan online, so none of your business also, rigth?

I like to educate other readers with info, so why then why you yourself same also “tulan” I share info online, right?

If you not “tulan” I post comments here, then you would not have replied to me, right? That shows you yourself also “tulan”. So, you yourself can tulan, grumbling and whining, but others cannot do the same?
So, your reply/response to me SERVE WHAT PURPOSE?? No purpose also right?Ha!

If you want, you go back to my MAIN discussion point on why small island nation won’t last; if not I won’t waste more time with you. Everyone is not stupid lah, they can read for themselves and see who got balls to debate main topic and who is just avoiding and trying to go off-track.
