Netizens urge Lee Hsien Yang to stand against PM Lee Hsien Loong in upcoming GE

Mr Lee Hsien Yang

More and more netizens are expressing their support for Mr Lee Hsien Yang, whose wife and son is currently facing legal actions initiated by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), headed by PM Lee Hsien Loong’s former personal lawyer and current Attorney General (AG) Lucien Wong.

Mr Lee’s wife, Ms Lee Suet Fern is currently being investigated by the Law Society (LawSOC) for alleged professional misconduct pertaining to the last will of the late Lee Kuan Yew while his son, Li Shengwu is facing contempt charge for an article he made in a private posting on Facebook – both actions were initiated by the AGC.

Support aside, netizens are also urging Mr Lee, who is the second son of the late Lee Kuan Yew to form an opposition alliance with Dr Tan Cheng Bock to contest in the upcoming General Elections against his elder brother, PM Lee Hsien Loong who heads the People’s Action Party.

But is Singapore ready for another famiLEE member to lead the country? Who is this Lee Hsien Yang other than he is the late Lee Kuan Yew’s son? Is Mr Lee a likable person who Singaporeans can look up to serve the country?

TRE did a search on the internet and this is what have been gathered so far, testimonies about Mr Lee from those who purportedly have met or knows him in person.

Tim Chan“…I was LHY runner during my NS days 1992-1993. He was the commander of HQ2SIB Changi then. To me LHY was a down to earth and humble person. Unlike some other officers who has many different demands and request. His usual drink in his office was a simple ice cold glass of water. I didn’t have to rinse his running clothes after his morning runs nor wash his personal stuff or run errands for his private matters, unlike what I heard from other runners from my batch.

“During our Taiwan field exercise for 9 days, his meals was again simple, Taiwan instant noodles and combat rations, like what the HQ troops like me and other lower ranks would eat. Noodles alternating with tulip canned sausages, and Campbell cream of mushroom soup, all prepared in mess tin and served to him. He didn’t once complain how the food was cooked or tasted.

“When HQ Encik gave LHY a list of items for the Taiwan exercise, which included hot water flask, metal bunk bed, mattress and pillow, GS table and chairs for his sleeping tent. He told me to inform Encik not to bring all those into the field, all he wanted was the usual SAF safari bed and he brought his own sleeping bag, which he used during the entire 9 days.

“A practical man, who doesn’t need a entourage to follow him during reconnaissance trips and actual exercise, if he doesn’t need a signaller or any officer, he will tell them to stay back, he takes only what he needs, unlike some officers.

“I have also been told by other NS men quite a few times that LHY even open and hold the doors for lower ranks when they enter into the exercise planning rooms, as well as him greeting them even before others can greet him when walking along the corridors in camp. Didn’t intend to share my thoughts, but after reading Mr Lim and what others have posted, i thought I share. I don’t think he LHY has change much, and I Respect him.”

Athena Lee“He was the CEO of my ex company, and he would join the queue with us for morning coffee in canteen. Very humble person and has no airs.”

Sabrina Fernando-Briche: “Many years ago I travelled back to Singapore from Paris and LHY and his wife were on the same flight. At the CDG airport duty-free in Paris they were in the same boutique where I was doing some shopping and I overheard him tell his wife that he needed to look for a present for ‘mama’, I thought to myself how sweet that was.”

Yoshiyuki Endo: “I was at SP for a seminar and he was the speaker. when he arrived, everyone stood up and clapped to welcome him. he however, told everyone to sit down and not treat him as a vip. he said he is just an ordinary person invited to share something he knew. I was impressed.”

Fazlena Kaswadi: “Many years ago, when I was working at the airport handling arrival and departure flights, I remember that he refused any sort of escorts to assist him and his family down to arrivals and baggage claims, even though the chief purser of Singapore Airlines insisted. Instead, he walked on his own, holding hands with his family and I thought to myself that he must be a humble guy. Not like his brother.”

Freddy Neo: “My wife and I often see him at Thomson Plaza Fairprice in shorts doing his weekly grocery shopping. No airs!”

Norazli Razali: “Still remember back then during my teenage years. Was working at raffles hotel and we do banquet at his then singtel office. Once event was over he stayed back talk to us and gave ang pao. He’s a nice guy to talk to.”

Erik Seeto“He was my CO in 46SAR. botak, friendly, and very low key. Once I even mistook him for a recruit (botak + jocky cap) and did not salute him. But he just smiled and went on his way, and my IC asked WTF was I doing. Unlike some COs, there was no pressure to be best unit or anything. We just did our best. Many officers were genuinely sorry to see him transferred . I hope people realise that whatever the difference of opinion amongst the siblings, they are all doing it not for selfish reasons. There is no need to tar and feather one because we agree with the other.”

Wilson Toh: “When I was in Armour, I was told LHY having no TV at home, for better education for his children. And he kept coming back to Armour joining us for running even he became BG. Well like by us Armour guys.”

Nelson Poon“I was a perm staff in Base 2 in ROC some time in ’93. LHY came to visit as BG. As usual, stuff gets painted and the camp is made as tip-top as it can be. Overlooked was a dump where we threw all the broken parts of the armored vehicles at a mud track somewhere at the back. He wasn’t expected to go there anyway. But obviously someone forgot and after inspecting the vehicle park he was taken on the short cut which runs past the dump.

“LHY saw and we all had “gg” written on our faces. We thought he would make a fuss about it during debrief and there would be hell after that.

“He said absolutely nothing about the dump. There’s nothing more for lower ranks to be thankful about, when superior officers would not make a big fuss over stuff like that.”

Steven Lee: “We were colleagues for at least 4 yrs in an organisation, tough training, harsh and risky work environment, irrational irritations and taboo, he remains calm and composed, honest , always contribute most surprising solutions in learning, problems solving, play and even struggle in the face of adversity. He was very fit and down to earth good man, remembered him participated as the anchor runner running the last lap of a 16 miles road relay..”

Brian Vittachi: “When I was running a pub in Klliney Road in the mid 90’s he passed by a few times and always had a nod and a smile for my staff or the customers sitting outside. Since he wasn’t a politician I took that as a sign of a genuine person. Some say he was more people-smart than his elder brother.”

Jason Lim: “I used to work at Caldecott Hill and there was once I was just outside my company and a colleague of mine saw a car drove past and tell me that the driver inside is LHY, I was still young back then not knowing much about him (because he was very low profile) but I got a shock when my colleague told me that he is the son of LKY and I couldn’t believe that the car that I am driving (a Honda Civic) is much better looking and newer than his. Can’t really remembered what car it was but it look like those Japanese nissan sunny COE car.”

Will Mr Lee rise to the call and “make things right” for a supposed sinking Singapore?

The answer may not be too far away.

Brother against brother no more family.

I’m not sure if Hsien Yang will enter politics, maybe a background role would suit him better since he has never been in politics. His donation to uncle Leong is an example of him working in the background.

Let us see what else he will do in the run up to the election.

Instead of respecting his younger brother for what he is and taking good care of him, he bullies him and his whole family. In the eyes of the public he has gone over the line. LHY is now the underdog and usually the public will strongly support the underdog as he is also bullying the citizens such as making them bankrupt and pushing policy down the public throat such as practicing black magic converting a goat to a horse (converting Indian to Malay) before appointing the President.

Probably he is under a witch spell.

Really, netizens. Can’t you see his (and his son)’s meaningful intentions? It is not a good idea at all for a third-generation Lee to stand; Though he is technically a 2nd-generation Lee, he knows he needs to set the example in preventing us heading towards the abyss of a failed, cronyistic, despotic, third-world-like state. However, he can support both financially and morally to the gentlemen and ladies who can direct the ship towards a real, 1st-world, modern democracy that was long overdue.

LHY should go into politics as he has a lot to lose if he stands on the sidelines arguing with his big brother the Clown.
If he wants to carry out his father’s wish; the easiest way is to get into politics and be elected, then he can demolish the house.

If he goes into politics, he can achieve a number of objectives Singaporeans are seeking now. Firstly, he can stop the PAP from monopolising the political arena meant for citizens. Secondly, he has enough respect from citizens to end the PAP rule. Thirdly, he can set Singapore on the right path to progress by working for the interest of citizens rather than for the envy of other nations. By ousting the PAP, he can also re-introduce democracy back to Singapore and stop any dynastic ambitions. Fourthly, we may get to know how much Ho Jinx is earning and all the secrets that citizens ought to know but are forbidden to find out.

My own view is that LHY should not be number one in any political party by work with the leader of the party of his choice. When he has accomplished what he can for Singapore, he can then retire gracefully from the scene.

Response: totally agree. LHY should help any opposition party or opposition alliance or form a party together with Dr CB to kick out Mai Hum and his PAPigs in the coming GE. Once mission is accompanished, obtain the endorsement to DEMOLISH 38 Oxley Road which is the Lasting Wish of his Late Father LKY. He may then choose to stay on or resign to enjoy his retirement gracefully. He will be remembered forever by All Singaporean as the Savior of Singapore! Just as his Father is being labeled as one of the Founding Fathers of Modern Singapore.

there is no law that says the good offspring need to turn evil to be sama sama as evil blood sibling.

This story, told me by a colleague of his at NJC, says nothing untoward of LHY, but only about some sorts of supporters and voters of LKY’s, in the civil service and elsewhere (now, also, supporters of LHL and PAP?). LHY took part in a long distance run, started too fast and fainted on the second or third lap. The principal must have panicked, fearing his father. The whole college was summoned the next school day to assemble, where the principal gave a long lecture on how to pace long distance runs. Reading what is said of LHY above, we can assume he was embarrassed by the college-wide, emergency nature of the principal’s response.

Perhaps Someone up above is directing the events down below. If not for the drastic actions taken against his wife and son, LHY would probably have left matters as they were and move on with his life. Now that it has come to this, he is given reason to stand up for his family and to identify with the weak and oppressed. This could be a pivotal moment if he decides to enter politics.

  • I have no doubt that Hsien Yang is all the above as commented but to ask him to contest against hsi brother is a far fetch hope, better to buy 4D more easier to strike.

More realistically, Hsien Yang would rather donate to Leong, SDP, WP, TOC, TRE, etc to fight the battle for him than get personal and take his brother on. In the SAF, commanders only give orders, where got cheong one?

Unless he is prepared to go all out, I don’t think Hsian Yang will dare touch his brother with a 100 foot pole, even if the heaven is backing him. They practically grew up together and there will be a tons of bones to throw at each other from the closets. When push comes to shove, there is always the ISA and criminal provisions to ensure that Hsien Yang will never see sunrise for donkey years.

Here we have a multi-millionaire (maybe even billionaire richer than Jack or Pony Ma) that can choose to live in any part of the world very comfortably without returning to Singapore. What his brother is supposedly doing to his family is peanuts, it is not as if the wife or son is going to jail or be hanged. At worst they be fined and or censured, basically a slap on the wrist which would not affect their current livelihood a single bit. Its really something that Hsien Yang should not be losing sleep over.

Politics is a dirty game and not suited for Gentleman. When there is a war between 君子and小人, the Gentleman always losses and Hsien Yang is not that stupid to not realise that.

If you bequeathed the property by your father, on his Will (Death Wish) and he has told you to demolish it after his death. What does it mean?

You then turned around and sold that particular property to your younger brother for a hefty sum, plus tax rebates for your donations from the proceeds of the sale. What does it mean?

Then you tried very hard, by all means available to you, to not demolish that particular building (sold to your younger brother by you). What does it mean?

  • @Bapak

I do not disagree on the “but”, accidents do happen.

However I feel that it is unlikely in this case because the current actions against his son and wife are merely “warning shots” that causes no real damages. Any damages at most, would be a couple of thousand dollars donated to Law Society and Finance Ministry – small change (peanuts) by a certain Ms Goh’s standard.

UNLESS some smart adviser decides to target Hsien Yang himself, say charge him for contempt since he has continued to post on Facebook about the case against his wife despite AGC’s warning to not do so.

As long as Hsien Yang is not ‘touched’, I would reckon Hsien Yang will continue to keep his cool but occasionally tickle his brother with more support for Leong, Dr Tan or maybe even alternative media.

From the comments in this article, Hsien Yang appears to be a gentleman and as such, no match for his brother when it comes to politics.

For someone who dare tell a seasoned and senior politician like Lau Goh to go mate with a spider, handling Hsien Yang would be a walk in the park.

The recent revival of blood persecution arose noticeably by the fuzz around LHY donation to LZH financial appeal to fight his defamation suite. The gesture quickly responded with an indirect attack still avoiding the bureaucrats accused of compliance and relying on Law Society to do their dirty work. The question why LHL not dragging LHY/LWL to the Court of Laws. Some said that the perception of a sure win will verified LHY/LWL claim of bureaucratic compliancy. Some said that these Biws n gorilla smothered imbecile r least worried abt this as this even before LHY/LWL public denunciation is a general perception from the well educated right down to chaitowkwei food vendor whom Chan Chen Sin despised n insulted his fried carrot as dirty n not worthy the $2 he charged. What the gorilla controlled imbecile n its fart worms were afraid of r that among those past dynasty fart worms who seemed to have transfer their loyalty to the gorilla gang may still have little feeling of attachment to the old foggy n his other children. Many who r acquaintances of the chiropractic medic of the famili has as much praises as their impression of the gorilla contrary to their old fogies. This impression r shared by those in nus. So the old plps may take the opportunity to show their loyalty to the old foggy who must have seen n regretted he has brought into his royal famili a gorilla with hyena blood during his dying days. This may alert Singaporeans who like the old plps n the gorilla will then be aborted with the dynasty change like Emperor Lee n the first empress Wu who subsequently knocked off the Lee uuseless children n took over as Emperor of China including the concept of harem.

This to gorilla should not happened before there r sufficient gorilla fart bred worms. LHY pledge support of Leong has frustrated the gorilla camp n came in handly for the conflict of interest to think of conflict of interest but for the same reasons should not have wide exposure in a Court of Laws which will be mocking the unsettled conflict of interest which already entrapped a mindless greed to come up with no conflict as long as one is successful. The very fact that the currently accused has proved her success as a woman to have married into the royal family that silly mindless chinoindo minister has failed but merely be ferried in the royal coach into the Parliament House. • Law Society n Mrs LHY:

Now the ball of conflict of interest crime is in the court of the Law Society.
The Law Society has by the public rationalization of conflict of interest in the appointment of AGC would have to establish whether Mrs LHY is successful in her career. Aparently Mrs LHL has several careers one a lawyer, the other a wife n another mother. in their deliberation.

If this criteria is not used then the Law Society would have to punlicly refute mMinister Indrandi’s defence of Lucien Wong appt as AG following which Lucien Wong would have to be brought before the Law Society on the same charge.

If the Law Society uses Indrandi’s criteria, it would have to inform internationally that this is what Singapore Law on Conflict of Interest n any previous cases decided otherwise should be publicly reprieved with compensation n reinstatement!

If LS not deciding the case on career success, shouldn’t Mrs LHL sue LS in Court of Law for inconsistency, compliancy etc etc , what say ya netizens esp those trained in Laws.

  • Long-term Interests:

If Hsien Yang is charge with contempt of court, then it becomes extremely obvious who is the one behind scene directing the minions to act against Hsien Yang’s whole family.

Cannot be the AG all the time, isn’t it? What kind of “tan” (gallbladder) does he has?

Cannot be the Law Society, isn’t it? It is too far detached in this family feud. If the Law Society dirties its hands upon the family feud, its reputation and standing would suffer for a very long time with diminishing returns. With Internet, memories cannot be erased. This episode will go down in the annals of legal history of the world (not just Singapore). The present leadership in the Law Society has to consider very carefully and deeply – for its long-term interests, not just this period of time when somebody is in power. This somebody is only human, a living SENTIENT being. And being human and SENTIENT means decline in power is a certainty, a matter of very short period of time, and death is an absolute certainty. Everyone has to die one day. That day can be 101 years old or 71 years young.

Therefore, it is prudent for the Law Society to think beyond the next 10 to 15 years or so.

Moreover, the Law Society has also to consider its own conflict of interests vis-a-vis others’ conflict of interests.

well, army has a lingua for this (if the story is true), it is called ‘discipline’ (everything, well almost everything, is couched mostly in the name of discipline or ‘insubordination’ if you disagree with your superior and he happens to disagree with your face or ‘attitude’). for me, it is hard to change my view that it borders on ‘abuse’ (license for two or 2 1/2 years) for some ‘punishments’ ? Talking in the present tense for experience / observation in the past in the good old army days.

‘this disciplinary measure’ has a way to make impressionable young men feel small and ‘wrong’ while at times these smug senior officers (or higher ranks) have a way to make them do silly physical work.

this conditioning on daft sinkies is already ingrained onto young men plus our already ‘fearful’ 151th standard environment (to this day, it is still selfishly practiced onto those ‘non-conformist’ activists). something like whatever the higher authority says must be ‘right’.

  • a PG:

I think LKY (when he was alive) never expected his family in ruin after he left the world. Normally, in Chinese, the eldest in the family has a moral duty to fulfil his parents’ wishes to take care of the younger siblings. See, what is happening now ! The whole world is watching now. This a sad story.

  • Not everyone can be one:

    Why do people enter politics?
    1. A calling, a sincere desire to want to help, to assist people. Not the least concerned about personal benefits. Derive deep satisfaction in doing it. Getting a high doing it which only that individual would know. He knows his own strength and temperament and intelligence to face those that will oppose him which is to be expected, all types and varieties.
It is not easy to be a leader and please everyone. But as a leader he does what he thinks is best for his people and country. He carry on irregardless and never give up and over time people will sense and recognise his qualities and he will be remembered as such. Such men are the rare few.
    2. The other category, he participates in politics for his own selfish ends. For business reasons, for prestige, to open doors, to boost the ego and false feeling of self-importance, the privileges that you get as politician, the returns, and other tangible and intangible personal benefits. These are fair weather policians who will disappear at the first sign of losing out.
    3. It is not easy to manoeuvre as a leader in today’s complex world. Mainly handle economics and security. You have to formulate polices to balance your relationships with neighbours and the big powers who could coerce or win you over, or dominate and control and trap you. This is the most tricky part of the job for any leader. How to play ball. Definitely not easy.
    4. Not everybody sits with the leaders at close quarters. Many do not know and understand the difficulties of the job. People should evaluate the effectiveness of the leaders in terms of the results and benefits you get. How do you rate the education system, health system, housing, transportation, safety and security, the speed in addressing issues, the overall confidence of the people and many other day to day and general needs and necessities etc etc.. And how do we compare to other countries overall. Tolerable, better or worst? How do we rate our situation and position.
    5. People tend to take things for granted. Try going without the basic supply of food and water for say three days for whatever reasons. We have read and heard of the sad stories in many other countries. Reflect on this.
    6. Nothing is perfect. It will never be perfect. It is human nature to want more and hope for better things. It is the rare ones that gives away all their wealth.
    7. Economy and security are important. But even more important is the cultivation of a wholesome well rounded person. Religion, philosophy, the arts, the puzzle of human existence, all the other drivers of cultivating goodness and humaneness, must be given the appropriate needed attention and emphasis to be included in the journey and processes dished out to the people. Don’t ever ignore this.

  • Not the Full Picture:

LHY may have a point in all that he has said and done.

But the way LHY does it smacks of personal vendetta. It damages his credibility, and from the viewpoint of the public, it appears it is little more than LHY having an axe to grind with his brother.

Some of us may not like the PAP. Even if we vote opposition, it has to be someone worth the vote. Not people like LHY who cannot seem to put aside his private grievances.
