Follow-up to ‘Why does the Singapore Government retain an army of Gurkha soldiers?’

I refer to my recent post on LHL saying that we cannot outsource national security. LHL’s statement triggered some questions in my mind. The thoughts behind my post was whether the presence of the Gurkha Contingent (GC) detracted from LHL’s statement, why the Government has retained the GC and whether we still need the GC in this day.

If the GC is here to serve our security, then LHL’s statement (that we cannot outsource national security) is an aspiration, not a reality.

If the role of GC is not to serve national security, then what is their role, who and whose interests do they serve and protect?

Many commentators have reminded me that the GC not only serve the national security but play a vital role in doing so; even perhaps playing an indispensable role in our national security, given that they just cannot be replaced by Singaporeans.

I have to thank those commentators for clarifying that we are indeed relying on non-citizens for our national security, in other words – outsourcing – therefore showing LHL’s statement to be an aspiration only, but not the reality.

Some commentators are terribly upset with me, saying that I have insulted and dishonoured the sacrifices of the Gurkhas. Actually, I have absolutely no doubt in the competency, honour and service of the GC. But I do think we need to acknowledge that a contingent of citizens is very different from one which completely comprises non-citizens. We do ourselves no favours if we blunt the sharp difference between them.

Tell me it is untrue that the GC is a legacy from our colonial past, set up before Singapore’s Independence in 1965 and before National Service was instituted in 1967.

The GC was left behind by the British and the PAP Government decided to retain them.

Is the GC a sacred cow which no one, especially politicians, should be wondering – or even asking – why our Government still maintains the GC today after 50 years of Independence and 2 maybe 3 generations of National Service?

Is one who questions why things are the way they are, necessarily an enemy of the state, an opponent of good order, an attention seeker, less patriotic, and not a lover of our country?

Or do we wonder and bother to ask because we love and care for our country, our people and our future?

  • No Dafts or Dogs Allowed:

The Gurkha Contingent (GC) is actually a line department of the Singapore Police Force and not the SAF as believed. Only about 2,000 Gurkha members are employed by the government of Singapore. (After three years of service, they are allowed to bring their wives and children to Singapore until the end of their service).

As a Singaporean, one should be alarmed if the Gurkha contingent is more than a brigade (4000). According to Govt. (?) the principal role of the contingent is to be a special guard force, and it is currently used as a counter-terrorist force.

Anyway, rest assured I know that the Gurkha would have to call in our army of 72000 if they can’t handle a situation. So our ultimate security still rests with our SAF. So toughen up, boys.

I say, this happens when someone doesn’t think before his speaks lah, thus embarrassing himself.

That’s why I’ve said in my previous post that our pm couldn’t be bothered to say anything when our NS men died. It has all the while seemed like small matters to him until the public outcry over Aloy’s death. Under pressure to say something coz GE is near, without thinking he said something wrong just like his famous “mee siam mai hum”.

Steady lor! The one who says, “We cannot outsource our security and defence to anyone else; we have to defend Singapore ourselves.” is actually someone having the Gurkhas protecting him and his elite ministers!

Hmm…. what he said could also tell us something, that he and his ministers have been regarding themselves to be above our country. Otherwise, how come he and his ministers don’t trust singaporeans to protect them but on defending our country, they simply forced singaporeans to do it?

Gurkhas are Paid Mercenaries left over from the British who still use them TODAY likewise Brunei the OilRich Nation who share our dollar parity…

They are a necessity since their loyalty to their Paymaster had been Proven time & time again for that I welcome them with OPEN arms…but watch them when they guard the Pigs homes which they are mainly employed for besides the Money Buildings they have to protect…walk pass and see how they STARE down on anyone passing by…

My POINT… with the Gurkhas and a Well Paid & Trained Professional Arm Force there is NO NECESSITY for NS a waste of time $$$ and Human Resources that can be put to better use

The Gurkha r stationed mostly in Gov buildings & critical Gov Stats installations as the higher ups don’t trust the locals citizens security personnel & that’s it. Locals NS men can’t be trusted to secure or guard the critical Gov/Stats buildings ( eg. The money manufacturing factory is heavily guarded by the Gurkha, PM or Ministers r also guarded by Gurkhas, Istana also guarded by Gurkhas ) .

Similarly, don’t trust Sin to Machine Gun Sin,

So conceptually, who will be loyal enough to Pay-Master to Machine Gun the locals? like for example, in time of ‘Run Road’ with the “$money”, or refuse to handover Power when lost? AAh! The Gurkha….???? hypothetically speaking.

  • LKY's memoirs:

In his memoirs,LKY recounted the use of the Gurkhas as an impartial force at the time when Singapore had just gained independence. He wrote:

“When I returned to Oxley Road, Gurkha policemen were posted as sentries. To have either Chinese policemen shooting Malays or Malay policemen shooting Chinese would have caused widespread repercussions. The Gurkhas, on the other hand, were neutral, besides having a reputation for total discipline and loyalty.”

In other words, Lee Kuan Yew trusted the Gurkhas more than the Chinese or Malay policemen, at the time.

LKY’s house was guarded by GC. He didn’t trust the local security officers.
Another reason Singapore continues to retain the GC because they are a neutral party, when there is a race or religion problem they will come in as a neutral party to enforce law and order.Multiracial society is very complex.

  • Aetos plenty foreigners:

Why do singaporean feel the pinch? The government is a big spender and will use all means to cover government spending. Every single item government spend on comes from taxes, levies and NRI , GST and tax payers .. GC – is a nett expense without income. I think about time for the PIGS to pay the GC for security services they provide at these COWs homes . Aetos run by Ching Ho Lee billed the government for services they provide. Plenty of Aetos police at checkpoints and causeway are foreigners ..aren’t they outsourced to foreigners? Our border frontline are managed by foreigners. Till today Mas Selemat escape is still scrounged in mystery.

Many assume these gurkhas are decent people…

U can easily identified gurkhas on the streets, by their decent haircut, neatly dress civilian attire.
I’ve previously seen gurkha coming out of Hotel 81, with a non-local gal (maid or pinoy). Some of these gurkhas even visit geylang at night.

They dont even eat at hawker centres, gurkhas are bit hi class, often seen them eating in fast-food restaurants.

Over time, these gurkhas’ main concern will be having more $$.
They only worked as police/military protection or enforcement jobs for the sake of money

Gurkhas are humans, so they’l also be tempted n seduced by more $$

  • Good Man:

    Gurkhas are paid mercenaries

    This statement from Reuters article:
“Such obnoxious practice of your citizens joining foreign armies as mercenaries, this will be stopped,” Baburam Bhattarai, a top Maoist leader seen as Nepal’s prospective prime minister, told Reuters.

What’s more horrible is that they each carry kukri knife. This lethal kukri knives, which their ancient tradition demands must draw blood every time it’s unsheathed. So if innocent people are to mess with their freaking knives, will their bodies or throats be slit? Ancient stupidity here!

Our top govt clowns are too over-reliance on these gurkhas. Even our police leans heavily on them too. They dont learn anything at all from these gurkhas (after so many years). Thats why our govt top clowns continue to pay these mercenaries to protect their asses….at the expense of training & relying on our own local force!!

  • A funny story:

I like the way they wear their hats :)
Look at the above pic…that Gurkha soldier has a pistol, a rifle and whats that bag strapped to his left leg…explosives? Omigosh.
    Very curious…
Once when Mr SR Nathan was POS and residing at ceylon rd i had a startling short encounter with a gurkha guard.
At that time i was young n still so blur .
Me, my mum, sister n little niece was walking down that lane to the Eurasian Assoc for a meal n look around. We knew it was somewhere around there but nottoo sure. 1st time.
While walking i spotted this gurkha standing outside one of the building so close to where we were walking as that lane is so narrow..i had NO idea it was the president’s home…
So i just made an innocent move forward to ask this “policeman” for directions.
The moment i stepped forward to his direction that ‘policeman’ made a move towards me n motioned me to move away with his arms still holding his rifle…n then got into his guarding position again with a slam of his boots on the concrete floor. The gurkha guard didnt say anything tho.
My sister quickly pulled me away. I got the fright of my life… but its not his fault-he was just doing his job.
I later found out he was guarding the outside if MR SR Nathan’s home.
Thats how a ‘jakun’ i was then.
We later found the Eurasian Assoc n had a nice meal there but i was truly shaken.
Whenever i think about it i tend to laugh at myself…!

  • PAP trusts farts n lp:

At a kopitian a couple of senior professionals were exchanging thoughts towards an article titled something like the Tragic life of Polanpas. The conversation focussed on the credit rewards plps n Gfartworms membership. They came to an unanimous conclusion that while in the process of credit accumulation, the novice would do anything whatever the lp or Gfarter wanted them to do including spreading threats n rumours. While credits mount, these plps arrogance escalated as he moved up the plp or Gfart ladder to more impt position within LHY/LWL acclaimed nature of the bureaucrats whenfrom the daily prayer is how bow n having yes sir on the tip of the tongue. As fast as this code of conduct impreganated to be an integral part of the carcass, the brain embracing what his parents, grandparents, teachers, religious guardians n professors taught them except plps or fartworms material steadily drained off n becomes half eitted with the other half filled with plp n fartworm doctrines by the time they get sufficient credits to be zmOS. At this juncture, one of these senior kopitiam conversationists interjected that to authenticate these observations example like Indiani, Cht etc must be quoted with their increasing spewing out of senseless garbage in order to accelerate their creits collection. By the time they climbed further up more than 75% of the carcass skull is displaced with how to plp n how to jump quueue to gulped in Gfarts. This continues until they joined the idiots n morons who began to expel their farts as there is nothing left in them except farts n pos.whence the Senior KC started calling out names as examples. The names came out like from an automatic. Some they sprefixed with pure dialect expletives.

Wonder whether these creative Sr KC can get their pral history cum their professional analyses work published as the publishing houses in Singapore r cplp controlled or r scare of the LHY/LWL bureaucrats n their what they decided as long as according to lps or Gfartworms wish will be nothing but laws just as ruling of conflict.

Suddenly, the idea flashed across. R these senior Singaporeans going into the arena having great funs on the moronic pimps n ingrateprostitutes. That will really be the coming of the wave of alertness of citizen Power not ingrat pimps n prostitutes!
