HSA should clarify what happens to donated blood

More than 800,000 blood donors personal information were improperly put online by a Health Science Authority (HSA) vendor for over 2 months. Although HSA was not directly at fault, it cannot completely absolve itself from it.

This is the latest in a series of MOH’s personal data breach.

With weak senior people in charge at MOH, citizens should not expect the latest blood donors personal information leak incident to be the last. I don’t know if we have learnt by now, but there are costly prices to be paid when weak people are in charge of things like in MOH.

Given that it was blood donors who were involved this time, it led me to another thoughts.

In Singapore, members of the public do not sell their blood to the Blood Bank. Instead, they donate blood to be used on other patients at both public and private hospitals. In this regard, I would appreciate it if MOH can clarify if these donated blood:

i) are used on citizens, foreigners or even medical tourists; and
ii) whether they are cost-free, charged at cost or charged at a profit

I totally accept that profit is not a dirty word because if it is, Singapore would have been dead a very long time ago.

However, I feel that the whole blood donation practice in Singapore must be more transparent and lesser at tugging at the heartstrings of donors and bordering on the charitable nature of many of the donors.

All donors in Singapore must be 100% clear that their blood that they willingly donate are either used to save lives at cost-free to the patients or use to save lives and at the same time, earn profits for the hospitals.

  • donate or pay/continued..:

in the end only 2 of us among 8family members could donate…so we still had to pay for the shortfall of 2 more bags of blood..it showed in the hospital bill re the surgery later on..
so its either pay with own blood or cash.

Ask the one who broke his arm getting out of bed; “Is that a problem when you only need to pay $8 for heart operation?”

Ask him, if the person should donate his blood first before hara-kiri.

Sorry, I forget. Don’t disturb him now. He is now on medical leave maybe until polling day.

Straits Times: Building a caring society with resilient people for Singapore’s future: Heng Swee Keat

What is HSK’s definition of “caring”? Singaporeans must be clear. “Token caring” is not really caring. “Caring” requires spending money which the Government has a lot of with its massive reserves and perennial Budget surpluses.

“Resilient” means being able to bounce back. This means something wrong which adversely affected Singaporeans. PAP must admits its mistakes. Actually, resilience would not really be needed if Singaporeans “kicked ass” instead of “kissing them”. Question everything. Ask tough questions and demand answers.

    @ Talk is cheap.

PAPpys DIEHARD HABIT is farting political correctness despite their meandering river of endless lies, scams and deceptions from HDB to CPF and the nexus of both to create the mother of all scams of fake home ownership.

If that didn’t work of outcome THEY PREFERRED, their modus operandi switch instinctively to OPPRESSION AND CENSORSHIP ( more cunning deceptive “fake news” legislation in the work???).

I’m a blood donor and I know that blood is never sold. Don’t spread false messages.
    Read and do your research
    https://www.hsa.gov.sg/content/hsa/en/Blood_Services/Transfusion_Medicine/Blood_Transfusion.html

You do not need to pay for the blood you receive during a transfusion. Blood is never sold. This is because blood donations are voluntary and donors do not receive any form of payment.

As a patient, you will only need to pay for a blood processing fee. This is to recover costs for collecting, processing, testing each unit of blood to ensure it is safe for transfusion.

Patients who are citizens need only pay a portion of the blood processing fee which is subsidised at two levels:

The Ministry of Health subsidises the costs incurred by the blood bank in processing the blood.
There is a further subsidy at the hospital level, depending on the patients’ ward class.
Patients who are Permanent Residents will also be subsidised, but at a lower level than for citizens.

  • opposition dude:

You know what ST will tell us? Something like the following below to make it sound like it’s not a big issue.

“A small portion (how much?) of donated blood is used on non Singaporeans (how many?) to aid in their recovery”

“Non Singaporeans are charged for the blood as it isn’t part of the fees paid (how much are they charged and how much has been earned until today?)”

This medical tourism thing was revealed to the public after a whole decade and the usual “Management is not aware of this matter” was used as a laughingly shocking excuse. Got caught liao quickly faster go say that this practice ends immediately. Questions need to be asked why this was allowed to go on for a decade, how many patients were admitted and how much was earned!

    ……

@Vignesh; so believe what was written on the website. That was only half the story. And it was for blood donor to read.

The questions were “was the donated blood used for medical tourists for a profit?”. And what about those citizens who were none blood donors?

I was a blood donor myself on multiple occasions, but one occasion, my blood was rejected, ever since then I stopped.
