UK got this right, Singapore wrong

E-Scooter Rider Killed at Ayer Rajah Food Centre in 2017

Recently it was reported on FB that a scooter user who ran into a a boy, punched the boy and his father.

This reminded me that in the UK, electric scooters are illegal on British streets and pavements under a law dating back to the 19th Century. The regular reports of collisions in S’pore between pedestrians and electric scooters show that something must be done about the use of electric scooters. What about banning them? UK is no less hip for banning them.

Or COEs are needed to use them? Or making users pass a test like car drivers and motor cycle riders? Maximum speed is fixed by manufacturer or importer.

Registering them is not enough.

Two very serious accidents

In 2016: A 19-year-old electric scooter rider who collided into a pedestrian, leaving her with brain injuries and in a coma, was given a short detention order and community service in 2018. Read more at CNA.

In 2018, a woman was knocked down by a man riding an e-scooter along Bedok Reservoir Road. The woman sustained head injuries as a result of the accident, and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Changi General Hospital. [ CNA ]

Hopefully stricter measures will be taken before a pedestrian is killed.

It’s not as though normal regular S’poreans will be affected. Morocco Mole’s second cousin removed in the traffic police says that all the above three offenders and others are known readers and ranters on TOC, TRE and FATPAP.

Uncle really wonders how many more unnecessary deaths and broken skulls and limps before the

The recent massive backlash on NUS in the sexual harassment case of Monica Baey illustrates the tardy and disappointing approach in managing and containing a very serious recurring problem which is allowed to continue. Now NUS is working to do the right thing.

They are adopting reactive management rather than proactive to all social problems.

  • Can We Save This Country?:

Banning is an easy solution, a lazy solution.
The sunset empire didn’t get it right either by refusing to embrace progress.
The scooter is not the problem, human is the problem.

People have conveniently forgotten about courtesy and grace, falsely using individual rights as pretext.
The underpinning of freedom and individual rights is respect.
Sinkies and those dafts who flocked to this island have abandoned basic courtesy and respect in living in this society.
Their actions and frustrations having increasingly been expressed outwardly and emboldened by rhetorics like Singapore is for everyone and steal someones lunch or nobody owes you a living… the actions and rallies of so called leaders and natural aristocrats have set the general tone of the society. They exalted greed as success… the shittytimes has been peppered with news of rags to riches to inspire get rich quick wannabe.
The Hyflux founder was once featured prominently, one other who offered patronizing words were well rewarded with free stay in this most expensive island in the world.
Petty squabbles are now more of the norm compared to the past.
    People’s tempers are short.
Just as in the Stanford experiment, the mice are killing each other now in an overcrowded space.

  • sharing the same walking path:

electric scooters (at the kind of speed) have no business sharing the same walking path as pedestrians ? for the kind of real harm (from accidents) as already evidenced by more and more cases, don’t know why the white idiots and gang are not coming out with law to ‘ban’ them leh especially in a much much more & more congested place like sinkie land becos of the white idiotic open-leg policy ?

whereas regarding matters that are disagreeable to the white monkey power, the white idiots will expend (in double quick time ?) ‘no’ resources to protect ownself-check-ownself ?

  • Bad Boy:

Current Pedestrian lanes , walkway or pavements or whatever , not suitable to be share with escooters , ebikes or even bicycles. Simply doing some slopes here and there are not enough. One of the issue Width of walkway is too narrow. Its initially plan and constructed for people to walk and not ride. A big revamp is necessary.

I have tried riding a bike on the walkway but found it very difficult too restricted and people blocking here and there sometimes no slopes or too far away. I rather ride on the road. Its much dangerous , but you can speed up as and when and if cars horn you , one can still slow down, stop and give way.

  • PAP is too cheap:

What is needed is a dedicated path for bicycles and PMD. But it will not be provided because PAP is “cheap”, except for themselves.

    =============================================================================

I CERTAINLY AGREE WITH THIS WRITER.
i have oso been saying similar things regarding inconsiderate CYCLISTS N PMD-USERS on our pedestrian WALKways ne ven inside shopping malls????!!!!!!!!!!

that MILK-IS-MILK minister got her promotion promoting CYCLING AND PMD-usage on our oredy NARROW FIVE-footways???

i am sure the walkways in UK are much wider on average and still the UK GOVT is wise enough to BAN such unsafe and hazardous usage on their walkways?

PAPple like to ape others to show they are *up-to-date*; even HO JINX kena injured ona PMD AND THAT WAS AT HOMEwith no one to obstruct her???

that GOOD AND BRAVE LAWYER who won the case for that PMD-user not too long ago oso brought the matter of BANNING PMD/CYCLISTS ON OUR FIVE-footways but NO ONE CARES?

I guess we must witness some relatives of ministers or perm secs getting hit till comatose by cyclists or PMD-users on our five footways before they re-think and admit their WRONG JUDGEMENT?

BTW,our people are not refine enough to pedal or ride on our 5 footways and our infra-structure for such use is not even ready or adequate.

maybe HALIMAH SHUD ALLOW CYCLISTS N PMDs on her EMPTY.UNDER-USED ISTANA GROUNDS AS WELL????

WTf! STOOOPID AS STUPIDOS CAN BE!
