It never rains but it pours

Last year, Singapore lost Broadcom (a Fortune 500 company) when it re-domiciled to the United States. With that move, many local employees lost their jobs, the government loses much tax revenues, and many of its local suppliers lost a major customer.

This year, IBM manufacturing will be leaving Singapore, Kinokuniya book store at Liang Court has closed after operating there for 36 years, and Orchard Road is so quiet almost every weekday evenings. The latest business bombshell was Singapore Tourism Board’s announcement that “it is no longer pursuing medical tourism as a travel strategy…”

For about 3 decades, Singapore has been a very successful medical tourism centre. Wealthy patients from Indonesia, Brunei, China and India etc. came each year for a range of medical care and treatments. Along with them, many other businesses in travel, hotels and the retail trades etc. have also benefitted.

The multiplier effects were substantial and our economy and people benefited in numerous ways. Singapore was able to offer well-trained, well- respected doctors with internationally accredited hospitals and quality assured treatments. But all that has changed.

Today, Thailand and Malaysia have quietly make huge strides into the medical tourism pie at our expense. In layman terms, their medical tourism standards are almost as good as Singapore’s but their costs are only half of ours. Currency exchange and high costs in particular are surely killing our medical tourism golden goose.

Singapore’s quality healthcare was ranked the most efficient healthcare system out of 51 countries by Bloomberg (2014). It was ranked second in the world for healthcare outcomes according to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) the same year. Last but not least, we are ranked first as a global favourite medical tourism destination in PHD Chamber and Medical Wellness Tourism Report of 2013.

How times and fortune have changed hands under an undeniably useless PAP government. Instead of further strengthening our pole position as an international premier health-care centre of choice that we have established and enjoyed over our neighbouring countries almost exclusively for years, STB has decided to give it all up and conclude that it is no longer worth our while to even try to savage it, that alone compete.

If only our electorate were smarter and more street-wise, they would not so easily fall for connections, impressive paper qualifications without matching real life experiences from PAP candidates, election ‘ang-pows’ of a couple of hundred dollars, succumb to threats or clever political rhetoric.

Eventually, the people who will lose biggest and lose out the most will be Singaporeans. Us and our children!

Well said! Singaporeans who still think government business is not our business better wake up and think again. Government business is what dictates our lives. If we that only serves their own interests, then our lives from housing to starting families to education to work to retirement and even to death (whether you can stay in your grave peacefully) are all affected, which is the case now.

For those retiring, you have worked hard for over 40 years of your life, now you are told to work some more because the 30+% of you salary that you have been saving every month for 40 years through CPF can only be given to you bit by bit, month by month. Sorry, no long-yearned for holiday overseas, no putting your feet up, no enjoying free time and grandchildren, because the government policy says so.

Simon, you have painted a very bad state of Singapore, (but) which is absolutely true & not a piece of fake news. High cost in space rental has “encouraged” many to move away. No need to explain who is the culprit, everyone knows except those idiotic-stupid-nincompoop70.

The way things are run, either we ship out that YOUKNOWWHO organization or they ship us out. Wake up you Sinkies70!

Yes, Singapore is heading downhill since 10 to 20 years ago when the top title holders decided to pay themselves millions and suddenly everything is moneyed, agencies is into making money as a priority, things getting more expensive and the poor and middle income families started to struggle to cope with ever rising costs

  • Fake rankings, be aware:

“Singapore’s quality healthcare was ranked the most efficient healthcare system out of 51 countries by Bloomberg (2014). It was ranked second in the world for healthcare outcomes according to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) the same year. ”

    Beware of fake international rankings.
    1. Most efficient means govt spending is the least. This is actually a bad ranking.
    2. Healthcare outcome: nobody dare to report sick. So health outcome is good. This is again a bad ranking.

@ Simon Lim, GREAT WRITING. OUR OBSESSION WITH PAVILION BUILDING is collapsing around us.

Those suffering will be little peasant Ah Sengs and Ah Huays to be further oppressed by POFMA.

We need someone to wake PAPpypolitics of the dangers of the pitfalls of egg-staacking.

    : the Chinese,
weiruleinuan (more dangerous than stacking eggs). In Spring-Autumn period, a king of the kingdom of Jin intended to build a pavilion of 9 stories, which would demand huge labor and other resources and would deplete the treasury. Against opposing voices from below, the king declared to kill anyone who dared to dissuade him of this plan. Then an official, Sunjin asked to see the king, claiming he could perform a very difficult trick of stacking up 9 chess pieces with 9 eggs on top of them. The king was intrigued and ordered to have all materials ready for Sun to perform. Sun carefully put chess pieces one on top of another to stack them up, and then, very gingerly put one egg on top, then another and another … Sweats ran out of Sun’s face as he went on with utmost care. The stack grew higher and higher, and became less and less stable, and the atmosphere in the house more and more tense. Every official watching was holding the breath in case air vibration would shake the stack. The king was very nervous and murmured, “so dangerous, so scary.” Sun immediately put in, “This is not dangerous. There are things more dangerous than this.” The king was surprised and asked for an explanation.Holding a last egg in one hand, Sun said, “Building the 9-story pavilion is more dangerous, which would take at least 3 years. In the 3 years, many strong labors are needed to do this, so is a huge sum of money. By the time it is done, people would be exhausted and disgruntled. The treasury would be empty and the state very weak. Neighboring states would take advantage of the situation to attack us, when we are at our weakest. Then we would not be able to defend ourselves. The kingdom of Jin would be conquered. And your majesty would be no more. Is that not more dangerous than stacking eggs?” The Jin king was so shaken by the scenario and ordered the immediate halt to the building plan. Here, Sun in his persuasion
appealed to the worse fear of every ruler, the loss of his throne and his kingdom, which had proved to be very effective.

    1) That sex-in-small-space encourages businesses to raise retirement age from 65 to 67. Eventually, that you SEE them PEE on you & F you organization will raise withdrawal age to 67 too. Wake up you Sinkies70!

    2) Dr M said only the people can change the PM. Though he was referring to JB Prince, this message also meant for Sinkies. One stone kill teo birds. Well said Dr M. Wake up you Sinkies70!

Who would want to come when they heard about the Hep-C casualties, the TB increases, the cases of equipment not properly disinfected, patients data leakages etc. Are these false? Also they pay high medical fees but instead saw doctors and nurses from their own countries (the CECAs, pinoys, Mudlanders etc) in our hospitals, might as well go Thailand and Malaysia which is just as good and much cheaper.

Well the kiasees don’t seem to mind it one bit as long as you know who is in charge. They don’t think too far ahead for their children and grandchildren as long as the status quo remains unchanged.

I’m not sure how many more elections are needed before these kiasees are the minority of voters. While it’s expected that the new citizens vote for PAP I do believe they aren’t half as kiasee as the kiasees since they weren’t brought up here and have been exposed to a different political system in their countries of origin.

    So just wait lah.

Our medical costs are higher because:
    - Hospital companies have to bid for land from the government driving building costs up unlike in Thailand and Malaysia where private hospitals development costs are significantly lower. Also Singapore Hospitals spend a lot on Architecture and Interiors
    - private doctors have to pay high rents or buy medical suites at exorbitant prices. In Thailand private hospitals provide the clinics and share earnings with the doctors with the most sought after getting a bigger share
    - finally our doctors charge too much

  • Public OR Private prices?:

Two years ago I was warded at CGH for gastric reflux treatment. So they did a partial-body abdominal CAT scan on me for S$800. I found out soon enough from someone working at Gleneagles Penang that a Full-Body CAT scan in that private hospital costs only RM1000 (S$350).
Is this the result of the government corporatizing the Ministry of Health under Temasek Holdings? It’s stupid uncompetitive economics!

Response: well said. 4 to 5 Decades ago, doctors and dentists were considered PAUPER but their profession was HIGHLY appreciated by the common folks. When Mai Hum who was then a MOS came back from UK after learning all the fiacking tricks of Market Economy from Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher, he revamped the whole SinKapore economy. SERVICES to the general public were NO LOONGER priced at NOMINAL charges BUT based on “MARKET RATE”. Loong story cut short, nowadays doctors and dentists some of whom(eg multi-millionaire Chicken HEN) earning obscene incomes and staying in bungalow, driving posh cars and wifey wearing diamond rings as big as rousell chocolate, must be quietly thankful to Mai Hum! While the well off get treated at premium private hospitals, while common folks, some of whom suffer from serious illness, have to join the LOONG queue very early at Polyclinic to obtain a referral LETTER in order to SEEK treatment and hospitalization at one of those RESTRUCTURED(actually they function MORE like a private hospital)hospitals. No referral letter, patient is charged PRIVATE RATE! Holee shit.
