A single payer system for health care

The Singapore Democratic Party advocate a single payer system for health care. What are the features of this system and how is it different from the current 3M system adopted in Singapore?

Here are the features of a single payer system:

a) It is a health care system that covers the population. Every resident is covered. Pre-existing illnesses are not excluded.

b) The state (or its appointed insurer) is the single payer for the medical services covered under the scheme.

c) A large part of the cost of the health care is paid by compulsory contributions (e.g. by employers) or by general taxation. The patients may have to make a modest co-payment for each service.

d) The state can provide the medical facilities or appoint private providers on negotiated fees. This approach helps to control the health care cost.

e) There is a defined level of services and providers under the single payer system. Wealthy individuals can opt out of the single payer system to buy their own private insurance.

The advantages of a single payer system are:

a) The ability to keep the health care cost under control and ensure an acceptable standard is provided.

b) The low cost of health care to the people as a large part is paid by general taxation.

Here are the disadvantages of the current 3M system (medisave, medishield, medifund) adopted in Singapore?

a) It is a messy and confusing system with a high administrative cost

b) It is not able to control the health care cost which keeps escalating at a high rate.

A single payer system works well in many countries, such as Japan, Taiwan and UK. While each of these countries has its own set of problems, the system generally works better than the free market system adopted in America and, to a large extent, Singapore.

In olden days, doctors and dentists were considered the POOREST Professionals. Then, consultation and medical fees were charged at a nominal rate. To both professions, it was SERVICE to the PEOPLE FIRST! Ask Dr Tan CB and he will TELL you the Hard Truth.

Nowadays, it’s HELL LOT OF DIFFERENCE! Both doctors and dentists are NOW amongst the RICHEST Holee Folks in SinKapore, period! Most stay in posh bungalow and drive big car. Some sneaky ones have EVEN managed to worm their way up the lucrative political ladder to become Ministers! This is only possible because of the ‘free market system”! It’s MONEY FIRST, before they(doctor and dentist) want to LOOK at you! In fact, you have to go pass the RECEPTION and REGISTRATION HIGH HURDLE COUNTER FIRST before you have a chance to consult that ALMIGHTY sitting inside the CONSULTATION Room!

One doc is minister of foreign affairs.

    Another is minister of defence.

The one heading the ministry of health actually studied engineering.

You say la, do they really care about health care?

With a clueless leeder making his yes-men play musical chairs every now and then, our ministry of health will soon become ministry of hell.

Very nice, as bring in millions of foreigners from 3.1 million population to 5.7 million. So, if China do the same, what will be their population. Here our gagament go for quantity but not quality. Sounds familiar?

This is the reason why we have so many Opposition parties, and cannot unite among them. Everyone want to be the leader. Everyone has 1 or 2 proposals which he thinks are the best. Hello, voters don’t vote you because of these 1 or 2 proposal. Voters are also not stupid. They want to see what at your entire manifesto. Cannot work as a team how to govern a country?
